I am new to this list.
Is anyone on list researching the Rutledge families who migrated
first from VA to MO to San Joaquin County, CA?
There seems to be several Rutledge families in and around San Joaquin
1850 onward. Many involved in copper mining and/or were
merchants. May all have been from the same family in VA.
Mine is John R. Rutldge b. abt 1804 VA. Married Nancy Ann Fulton,
Mar. 1829, Rockbridge Co, VA. Was in Wayne Co, MO from abt 1840 to
early 1850's. Then on to San Joaquin County, CA where he became a merchant.
Children of John R. and Nancy Rutledge were:
Mary Elizabeth 1831 (married Jabez Newton)
Edward 1834 (married Cordelia and Mary)
Virginia A. abt 1837
Augustus C. abt 1840 (married Almira)
Caroline abt 1843 (m. John Thompson)
John F. abt 1845.
Looking for anyone with knowledge of this family or the families of
Joseph H. or Edward G. Rutledge who were also in or around San
Joaquin at about the same time.

First Generation
1. Edward Rutledge was born in 1824 in County Fermanagh, Ireland.
He died in San Francisco, San Francisco, California.
Edward married Hannorah . Hannorah was born in 1834 in Ireland. She
died in San Francisco, San Francisco, California.
They had the following children:
2 F i. Sarah J. Rutledge was born in May 1854 in Stoughton, Norfolk,
Massachusetts. She died on 8 Jul 1933 in San Francisco, San Francisco,
California.
3 M ii. Thomas Martin Rutledge was born in Mar 1856 in Stoughton,
Norfolk, Massachusetts. He died on 5 Nov 1905 in San Francisco,
San Francisco, California.
+ 4 M iii. Edward James Rutledge was born in Sep 1858. He died on
6 Apr 1932.
5 F iv. Paulina Mary Rutledge was born in Oct 1863 in Stoughton,
Norfolk, Massachusetts. She died on 19 May 1923 in San Francisco,
San Francisco, California.
+ 6 F v. Nora Rutledge was born in 1864.

4. Edward James Rutledge (Edward) was born in Sep 1858 in Stoughton,
Norfolk, Massachusetts. He died on 6 Apr 1932 in San Francisco,
San Francisco, California.
Edward married Mary E. Fay daughter of Michael Fay and Jane in 1885
in California. Mary was born in Sep 1868 in San Francisco, San Francisco,
California.
They had the following children:
7 i. Rutledge was born in 1886 in San Francisco, San Francisco,
California. Rutledge died before 1900 in San Francisco, San Francisco,
California.
8 ii. Rutledge was born in 1887 in San Francisco, San Francisco,
California. Rutledge died before 1900 in San Francisco, San Francisco,
California.
9 F iii. Ella Rutledge was born in May 1888 in San Francisco, San
Francisco, California.
10 F iv. Madeline Rutledge was born in Oct 1893 in San Francisco,

6. Nora Rutledge (Edward) was born in 1864 in Stoughton, Norfolk,
Massachusetts.
She had the following children:

Samuel married Madeline A. Pluth daughter of Pluth and Golobic in
1907 in San Francisco, San Francisco, California. Madeline was born
on 20 Apr 1889 in , , California. She died on 16 Sep 1987 in Sonoma,
Sonoma, California.
They had the following children:
13 F i. Agnes Honoria Piercy was born on 26 Sep 1908 in San Francisco,
San Francisco, California. She died on 20 Apr 1978 in Sonoma, Sonoma,
California.

I'm John Rutledge in Eugene, OR... Saw your note to Tina (who
also lives
in Eugene...) and thought I'd jump in... Carole and I have been trying to
get another Rutledge get-together going in Eugene... we used to have them on
quite a regular basis... I promised Tina, Donna (who lives near you in
Brownsville) and Cheryl, (who lives in Oakridge) that I would organize a
meeting soon... but our son and wife had triplets born in December, and
things got hectic... anyway.. I PROMISE, I'll get at it again...
I'm really interested to hear from you... by any chance, do you know Lt
Dale Rutledge of the Oregon State Police..? I retired from the Eugene
Police Dept in 1991.... often heard of him, abut never got to meet him in
person.. I'd like to see if he knows about any of the Oregon Rutledge
lines.. I see Dale on TV from time to time and think he works out of the
Salem Headquarters...
Also.. I've been working on a line of George Rutledge who migrated to
Humbolt Co CA from MI/OH... He then moved to Benton County. I've been able
to track some of his children, found gravesites for seveal of them near
Albany. He married a Sarah Ann Kay in Hillsdale Co MI in 1864. George was
born in 1841 in Ohio. They had children: Arthur R, James Edwin, Estella D.,
and Elnora, Lena R, George Melvin (who died in Roseburg) and Grace.
Anyway.. if any of this rings a bell with you I love to hear... All my

Been doing some more on the Oregon Rutledge line of George and Sara...
I've
attached a report of info I've dug up so far.... Could you look thru it and
see if any names or places jump out at you...
What's of interest to me right now is finding a census entry for George
Rutledge in Humbolt Co, CA in 1880. Note that George indicates his parents
were
both born in PA.... so.. maybe we're onto the right line afterall... I
know
that's a thin connection, esp. since George later lists other places of birth
for
his parents.. but... the is very early on.. maybe he hadn't gotten it all
mixed up yet..;)
Also, his obit gives a possible clue to their MI roots... it mentions a
sister in Richland, MI., so we need to follow up on that point.
Last.. I haven't gotten the info entered yet, but I've located several of the
Kay family line living very near to George and Sara in Humbolt Co, CA.
This
caught my eye since their son Arthur's death notice in the CA index states
his mother's maiden name was Kay.
There are two families.. living next door to each other...
William Kay, 28, wife Jane, two children. Wm is born in MI, father Ohio,
mother Ohio.
Daniel F. Kay, 25 MI OH OH. LIving with him is his
mother, Mary A. Kay,
45, OH VA OH. ; his brother, Frederick M., 9, CA OH OH.; and his
grandmother, Esther Snider, 82, OH KY OH.
Its my guess this is the Daniel F. Kay who will later marry Estella Rutledge,
dau of George and Sara.
So.. this adds credence to Sara's maiden name mentioned in Arthur's death
index.
Anyway... it seems these names, places of birth, dates, etc. are setting a
pattern that may fit for your line coming out of PA.... Let me know what you
think...

From notes on my fathers family chart. John and Bertha Rutledge moved from Salina, Kansas in 1891.
The Rutledge Brothers Planing Mill was owned by three brothers, John Rutledge,Charles Rutledge, and William Rutledge. The business was not enough for three families, so John pulled out and moved to Red Bluff , California.
William Andrew Richard Rutledge , born Nov 4,1858 in Markdale, Ontario, died Mar 16, 1926, in Sacramento, Calif. , marrried Francis C. Smith of Illinois, born 1855, died in Sacramento in 1932. Charles James Golden Rutledge, born Nov. 27,1860, died in 1932, in Witchita, Kansas. Married Elizabeth Ellis, born 1858, died in Witchita, August 1949.
Alice Melton, their aunt, daughter of Martha Letitia Rutledge, lived from 1880 to 1965. For 50 years she was secretary to succeeding Presidents of Witchita State Agricultural College. If you want more dope on this fairly obscure branch, just whistle.

we are starting this page to accomodate those Most Wanted
ancestors who were in California as far back as the Spanish era. My grandfather (Avon Guy Rutledge) had spent time in
Oklahoma , his children were borned in Oklahoma he came back out
to Lamont and Bakersfield area in 1936. Lived in Sunset Labor
camp,(Grapes of Wrath),Worked as a Carpenter all his Adult
life,Belonged to Carpenter Union Local #743 will any of this help

the information on my "lost cousin" Father--Arthur B.
Rutledge b-1894 in Eureka Ca. d-1925 in Eureka CA. married
Marjorie Nelson in Eureka CA. date on Marriage license is 8/4/21.
Arthur & Marjorie had a Daughter born in Eureka CA. in
approx. 1922 Helen was three years old at her fathers death.
Arthur's widow Marjorie & Helen approx. a year to 18 MOs
after Arts death moved back to Marjorie's home place Eau Claire,
WI. Marjorie remarried I assume in Eau Claire Helen took the
surname of her Stepfather we only want to authentically complete
our family tree, and since Helen is blood, so to speak we would
appreciate hearing from her progeny, Nelson, relatives, or

Grandfather John Brown Rutledge. He was born in either Kentucky
or Tennessee in 1839. Does anyone have any information on a John
Brown Rutledge that sounds like it could be a match? He was
married to Nancy Mauser, who at one time was also Nancy Chapman.
They had one son Guy Rutledge, born in Hanford, CA in 1888. J.B
Rutledge died in the 1890's, probably in Fresno or Hanford, CA.

Hi, I've come up with more info on my Grandfather Avon Guy
Rutledge, I have names of his Parents: Father name is James
Rutledge(missouri) mother is Bessie Magruder (missouri), His
Parents were killed or passed away (date unknown), when he was a
young boy, my Grandfather and one of his brothers were raised by
an Uncle here in Bakersfield, (Edmondson) was the uncles name ,
there were other siblings, number of siblings unknown, they were
raised by other relatives around the country. Thier whereabouts
are unknown.
