Hi Ron,
Donovan Rutledge and I are cousins --- his gr grandfather George W Rutledge
and my gr grandfather Charles Edward Rutledge were brothers... both were
grandsons of the illusive Fountain Rutledge b in KY 1796.
Second Fountain Rutledge was Fountain Leonidus Rutledge, brother of George W
and Charles Edward. Fountain Leonidus was also a grandson of the KY Fountain
Rutledge
Third Fountain Rutledge was the actually James Fountain Rutledge b ca 1837
of TN, son of William H Rutledge and Clarissa Ann Belote. This Fountain
Rutledge served in the Civil War from TN. There was a descendant of this
family and I encouraged him to participate in the dna study, but so far I
don't know if he did.... his name escapes me at the present... think it was
Mark Rutledge??? but the old memory isn't what it used to be.
There are 3 of us (cousins) that still wonder about old Fountain's parentage
and hope we will someday find the answer.

This was Carol Brunner Rutledges husband, Donovan' line. If I don't see a
response from him shortly, I will e-mail him and let him know about this.
Fountain hs been his brickwall for a long time now. He may already have
the information, but I would like to make sure he is aware of this
information.
Also, I believe that at last count there were about 3 or more Fountain's
that have been found. I don't know where all of them were located, but I
am fairly certain that Donovan's Fountain was in KY.

No success stories here yet. I did most of all of my postings on my
Rutledge's-Lrootsweb.com back in May of this year, but I have not been
contacted by any Rutledge family members. Here's a little information from
those posting and what I already knew and some new information that I've
learned since then.
I found my gr-gr-grandfather Caleb W. Rutledge was living in McMinn
county,TN on the 1850 and 1860 census with wife Eliza, their children -
Elizabeth, William and Thomas. I found where he had married Eliza Ann Berry
in Claiborne County,TN in the 1840's. I also have information that he was
most likely born in Virginia about 1825. I was never able to find this
family on any kind of 1870 census.
The next time I picked up Caleb or C.W. Rutledge was on the 1880 Rockcastle
County,KY census. However, I believe that Caleb and wife moved back to
Claiborne County,TN area by the 1890's and that they must have died there
sometime in the 1890's.
Their children Elizabeth, William, Thomas, and Lula would marry and stay in
the Rockcastle, Laurel and Bell county area of Kentucky. I believe oldest
daughter Elizabeth Rutledge married William Barger and can be found on the
1880 Rockcastle county,KY census. William and his family (second wife) can
be found on the 1880 Rockcastle Co.,KY census and then again on the 1900
Laurel Co., KY census. Thomas and wife Eva can also be found on the 1900
Laurel Co,KY census. Youngest daughter Lula born about 1864 and married in
1884 can also be found in Laurel Cop., KY 1900 census.
From William's 1880 Rockcastle CO.,KY census you'll see has a son named
Charles. If you now jump to the 1910 Bell County,KY census you'll see
Charles or Charley is married and has three kids (it says 2 kids, but 3 are
listed).
Next I was able to get a 1960 obituary on Oscar E. Rutledge who was one of
the 3 kids from the 1910 Bell Co., KY census :
Oscar E. Rutledge's obituary appeared in the
Wednesday, June 22, 1960, edition of the Louisville,Kentucky
Courier-Journal, on
page 12. It read:
"Oscar E. Rutledge, 51, a foreman for the Raymond Krauth sheet-metal firm
at Baxter and Rogers, suffered a heart attack there Tuesday morning and
was dead on arrival at a hospital. Rutledge, 2125 Maple, had been ill
since October. Survivors are his wife, the former Virginia Gordon; two
sisters, Mrs. Cleo Tyrell, Mitchell, Kentucky, and Mrs. Leona Brooks,
Cincinnati, and a brother, Charles Rutledge, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The body will be at Rafterman's, 2114 West Market, after 2 pm Wednesday."
I tried looking up email address and phones numbers.Yes, I made some
telephone calls to these area's in hope's of reaching his sibling's
family's. But no luck.
So that's where I'm at on my Rutledge's. I do know where some of them were
as late as the 1960's, but have not been able to pick up their trail from
there.
William
Don,
At least twice I've sent you info regarding my Rutledges and they've
never shown up on the website. I've also sent them to the list but it
appears no one on the list is related. But hope springs. . . so here
they are again:
John R. Rutledge (my 3G Grandfather), b. abt 1764, Wales or South
Carolina; d.10 Oct, 1832, Livingston County, Kentucky; buried Lemon
Farm, near Salem, Livingston County, Kentucky. He is found on the 1820
US Census in Sandy Creek, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.
His daughter, Sarah Ann Rutledge, was born in abt 1789 in South
Carolina; d. 1873, Salem, Livingston County, Kentucky; buried Lemon
Farm, near Salem, Livingston County, Kentucky. Living next door to John
in the 1820 census is William Lemon who fought with Andrew Jackson in
the War of 1812 at the Battle of New Orleans and married Sarah Ann
Rutledge on 6 Jun 1806 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. She is
shown in the US Census with William in 1820 in Louisiana and in both
1860 and 1870 living with her son Elias B. Lemon in Salem, Livingston
County, Kentucky. Lemon is also spelled Limon or Lemen.

I have been a long time and lately a silent (almost) member
of this list.
My elusive ancestor Fountain Rutledge (b 1796 KY) is still a big brick wall.
The connection of the Rutledge and Gamble family to Ann Mayes Rutledge
caught my eye(as it may have years and years ago and I did not have the
sense or maturity to follow the lead!) As long as my Rutledge grandmother
was living she claimed we were related (cousins) to Ann Rutledge... and if
you had ever met my grandmother, you would have known better than to
question anything she said!! I have no idea how far back the story about
being "cousins" began, or how many "removed" figure into the equation.
In reviewing all of my records concerning Fountain Rutledge, I now find the
same Gamble families living near him in KY, IN and then in MO. Fountain
lived in Scott Co., and Jessamine Co KY before moving to Hendricks Co IN in
1837. There are Gambles in neighboring Bourbon and Harrison Co KY and this
family are then enumerated next to Fountain Rutledge in 1850 and also in
1840 Hendricks Co IN (that census is alphabetical so neighbors are not
obvious.) Josiah Gamble (b 1777 VA) purchased land in Hendricks Co IN and
moved his family there ca 1830 from Bourbon Co., KY... Fountain purchased
land in Hendricks Co IN 1837... coincidence or family following
family....cousins???
We know that sons of George and Nellie (Gamble) Rutledge came to America -
now it stands to reason that brothers of Nellie Gamble also immigrated and
may have also intermarried with the Rutledge before leaving Ireland. All I
have to do now is prove it!!
Any info anyone might have on Nellie Gamble would be welcome and
appreciated...

My father's middle name is Overton. He and all my relatives
- father,
grandfather don't seem to know why. I assumed it was for some relative or
friend. My father, John Overton Rutledge and Robert Emmett Rutledge were
born in Mississippi ( Roxie and Copiah county , respectively ). Any
suggestions where the middle names are from??

P.S. I just found a letter from John Wesley Rutledge (lived in Texas ) to my
father. He signed it Uncle John.

In all our discussions, I don't remember Overton Co. TN being
mentioned. My G Grandfather moved from Stokes Co., NC to Overton Co.

I've looked for relatives nearby but cannot find any. I never
thought of looking in KY, even after our DNA showed a close match.
Where were your relatives in KY, and at what time?
Since my James was born in 1833, and your Joseph Sr was born in 1832
(and was the son of a James!), do you think that their might be a
connection there?
Maybe back in 1858, they had a better handle on near relatives than
we do? :-)

Hi,
I am a descendant of Fountain Rutledge b 1796 KY - and have exhausted just
about all venues to find his ancestors. I know of a James Fountain Rutledge
b 1839 Wilson Co TN, son of William W Rutledge and wife Clarissa Ann Belote
and nothing I have found links the two. I can only suppose they were named
for a man named Fountain.
That brings me to the Overton name in TN. In researching my Rutledge
family, it so happens that one of the grandsons of Fountain Rutledge,
Charles Edward Rutledge married Eva Lee Overton (my gr grandparents) and of
course my search also included the Overton family, which is another
maddening project, especially when some believe they were originally
Howerton!
In TN, there was a Major John W.Overton, son of Waller Overton and Martha
Ragland, born in Fayette Co KY in 1791 and lived most of his life in TN.
John W Overton never married, but was at one time the private secretary to
Pres. Andrew Jackson. John was very popular in TN and died at the residence
of his brother Dabney Carr Overton 25 Mar 1853 in TN.
It just maybe that your Rutledge was named for this Overton - then again -
the Overton's were as many as our Rutledge and just about as hard to sort
through -

grandfather don't seem to know why. I assumed it was for some relative or
friend. My father, John Overton Rutledge and Robert Emmett Rutledge were
born in Mississippi ( Roxie and Copiah county , respectively ). Any
suggestions where the middle names are from??
Robert L.
P.S. I just found a letter from John Wesley Rutledge (lived in Texas ) to my
father. He signed it Uncle John.

Where were your relatives in KY, and at what time?
Since my James was born in 1833, and your Joseph Sr was born in 1832

Hi Kermit,
I was able to take a look at the header page on ancestry.com for
the Rutledge's in Claiborne County,TN in 1830 and 1840. But I don't
have a paid subscription to that site so I couldn't take a look at
the actual census records. So I wasn't able to make any kind of
connection that my Caleb would be related to these Rutledge's.
However, I'm betting that if Caleb got married in Claiborne in the
early 1840's that he would be related to some of the other
Rutledge's that lived there and showed up on the 1840 census. It
sounds like you might be on to something with the Caleb Rutledge
who lived in Green County,TN in 1840. And then with a name like
Caleb Rutledge, he could have very well been related to my Caleb
Rutledge. I also saw some of those Ratleges who lived in McMinn
County in 1850 and 1860. And I believe you may be correct when you
say they ended up spelling / or leaving their name as Ratlege and
not Rutledge. I believe that even today, that some of them
probably continue to spell their name as Ratledge. We're they
related ? The name sure sounds and looks to much alike for it to
be a just a coincidence, for them not to have been related. But I
do know that mine never changed the spelling of their name from
1850 and on. My Caleb Rutledge's spelled their name as Rutledge.
Now I can only take a guess as to when Caleb died. However, if I
were to take a educated guess based upon the information that I
have, I would say it was between 1890 and 1900. For one thing, I'm
pretty sure that I have some information around here somewhere
that says that Caleb filed his civil war papers in Kentucky in
1890.
Thanks,Bill

Bill, since Caleb married in Claiborne County, have you looked at
the
Rutledges who were there in 1830-1840-1850? According to the
indexes,
there were one or two families each census year. I only found the
index, not the transcriptions, or I would have looked, myself.
And if I
remember correctly, there were a considerable number of Hursts.
There is a Caleb Rutledge on the 1840 Greene County, TN census.
Too old
to be your Caleb, but on the other hand, that is not exactly a
common
given name among Rutledges, so maybe something to do with a
naming-pattern? Also, a Benjamin Rutledge is on this census, next
door
to a Stephen Massey, and someone on this list has ancestors among
those
two families, I believe. (Benjamin Rutledge married Mary "Polly"
Massey).
All those Ratlage/Ratledge/Ratlege families in McMinn County have
me
wondering if they were indeed Rutledges, or if they should be
considered
an entirely different surname. Ordinarily, I would have suspected
enumerator misspellings, except cemetery records also reflect the
"Ra"
spelling.
Any idea where Caleb died? Do you know if they remained in KY,
after
1880?

Hi, Don,
I sent you these once before but since they never showed up on the
most wanted list I thought I'd try again.
I have only two Rutledges & know very little about the father - here
goes:
My 4G Grandfather was John R. RUTLEDGE who was born abt 1764 at an
unknown place - possibly Wales or South Carolina. He died (no date) in
Livingston Co., Kentucky and is buried at the Lemon Farm Cemetery near
Salem, Livingston Co., Kentucky along with his wife for whom I have no
name. He is on the 1820 census in Sandy Creek, Feliciana Parish,
Louisiana along with William LEMON, my 3G Grandfather who married
John's daughter Sarah Ann RUTLEDGE. By 1830 he was in Livingston Co.,
Kentucky. Sarah was born in 1789 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.
She married William LEMON 6 Jun 1806, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.
She died in 1873, Livingston Co., Kentucky and is also buried in the
Lemon Farm Cemetery. Note: my source for most of this refers to EAST
Feliciana Parish but according to the census records it's Feliciana
Parish (no East). I have quite a bit more information on Sarah but
John is a real mystery.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for that information, Jan, but I don't think it gets me any closer. I

I've seen initials changed like that when one is trying to read notes perhaps
scribbled while looking at a microfilm reader. I tried to contact Ms. Clemon,
only to be informed that she has died. I was directed to this Rutledge group.
I can say with certainty that William Danner married Lois Elizabeth Rutledge
(1863-1943), the daughter of James Edward Rutledge (1834-1917) of Virginia,
who in turn was the son of Elijah Rutledge.
For the record I add below my grandmother's obituary as it appeard in the New

was my father.

Have we ever traded info on the Clark Co Rutledges..? I don't see a record
in my file that we have.... Anyway... I have tons of stuff on these folk,
including numerous Clark Co Circuit Court documents... several for Henry and
his widow, Catherine. A couple of these documents can be used to prove
Henry's dod as 1833... one a lawsuit filed by their children against
Catherine in 1848 which states Henry died intestate "fifteen years
ago". It
was filed in 1848. The second a Court record in which Henry has a
neighbor,
Mitchell Byrd, arrested for trespass, trampling his crops and threatening
Henry and his family with a gun. This suit was filed in April 1833, but
dropped due to the death of Henry.
Also, I have some photos of Isaac A. Rutledge and his family with Millie
Martin Bradley. I also have photos of his brother John P Rutledge and
Honor
Aldridge, including pics of their gravesites in Middle Grove, MO.
I also have add'l info on John Sr, and several of his other children.... Let

Hi Carol, Wow, you really have given me something to think about! I am going to take time
to digest this but after reading through everything twice, you maybe on the right track.
It is hopeful and as you say it is a theory. I have always believed that the freed Charlie
was not originally Fountain's or his mother's and that he, Fountain, had acquired him by
his second marriage to Mary. The census of 1830 Scott Co KY does not show Fountain with
any slave count. We have guessed (no record found to date) that the second marriage of
Fountain was after 1830. The date of the emanicpation of Charlie is dated 17 Feb 1834, two
years after the death notice of Elizabeth Allen Rutledge. Why didn't Fountain free Charlie
sooner? I haven't found any Slave census rolls that list Elizabeth or Fountain as owners.
Maybe Charlie was with the elusive husband and father of Fountain! On the Jessamine Co KY
tax roll of 1815 & 1816, Elizabeth is taxed on 3 horses. Question: If she had a slave,
wouldn't she be taxed on that also? In 1817, Jessamine Co KY tax roll, Fountain is listed
on the tax roll with 3 horses. Did they list him instead of his mother and if so was it
because he was an adult? After 1816, Elizabeth A. Rutledge is not listed on any census or
tax roll and the only thing I have on her is that in 1825, she and son Fountain were
members of the Long Lick Baptist Church and in 1832 a notice in the church records of her
death. For 16 years, she wasn't with Fountain, so where was she? The will of Edmund Walker
<"Edmund Walker, in his will of 1765 gave to his daughter ELIZABETH WALKER, 2 negroes, Charlie and
Buck.". The land was given to the sons, slave to the daughters and granddaughters. How did our
Elizabeth A. Rutledge acquire any of this Walker land? Was it by bequeath from one of this
Walker family between 1765 and 1799 when Elizabeth Allen Rutledge & the two Walker
women engaged Matthew William Walker to settle the sale of land in Charlotte Co VA.
"From the Commissioners Deeds Jessamine County, Book A p. 18 Walker to Walker Know
all men by these pesents that we Mary Walker, Elizabeth Allen Rutledge and Mary Walker
(Junieress) all of the County of Jessamine and State of Kentucky have nominated appointed
and ordained Matthew William Walker our local attorney in fact to negotiate all our
business in Charlote County and State of Virginia particularly to sell and convey a deed
in fee simple a certain tract of land lying baing (sic) and situated in the county of and
state aforesaid containing two hundred and eighty acres by survey adjoining William Fears,
John Carrier and Levi Blankinship and Joseph Chaffings and to do all such other things
that we might or could do if we were personally present which shall be binding on us our
heirs (symbol) jointly and severally forever in we have hereunto set our hands and affixed
our seals this twenty fifth day of May Anno Domini 1799 Mary Walker - her mark, Elizabeth
A. Rutledge - her mark Mary Walker Junss? - her mark." As you see, you have started
me thinking again about these Rutledges and asking questions! You can be sure that there
is more to come! cousin, Carole G in CA From: Carol or Donavon Rutledge

1820s or early 30s it would have shown up in their book, right?
Here is what might have happened: Fountain married Judy Finney
in 1823 (fact), our ancestor John was born in 1826 (fact),
Carole Gregory believes there is also a sister Elizabeth)
and then sometime shortly after, Judy may have died. Perhaps
in child birth? We do not have her death date nor do we have a
marriage date of Fountain and Mary, but suddenly we find Fountain
and Mary have a girl Mary Ann (abt 1835). To compound matters, we
do not know for sure who Mary Ann married - she said James Rutledge
but there is no mention of him in a thorough obituary, and her grand
daughter said: "Grandma never married."
Would you watch for a date for the marriage of Fountain and Mary please?
Possibilities for her last name include McAlister (various spellings) and
Palmer. She was born about 1796 in Pennsylvania and died in Lewis Co Mo
Sept. 18, 1881.
And if we could impose on you further - in your research, if you come
across Judy Finney Rutledge's death notice, we would be really happy!
Sounds silly to be happy over a death notice..... Thanks! CBR
Hi Jean,
Yes, a death notice for Judy Finney Rutledge would make us happy, a
marriage for Fountain and a Mary would put us even happier! But a record
of the elusive father of Fountain Rutledge would put us in orbit! Carole

Hi Carol,
Wow, you really have given me something to think about! I am going to
take time to digest this but after reading through everything twice, you
maybe on the right track. It is hopeful and as you say it is a theory.
I have always believed that the freed Charlie was not originally Fountain's
or his mother's and that he, Fountain, had acquired him by his second
marriage to Mary. The census of 1830 Scott Co KY does not show Fountain
with any slave count. We have guessed (no record found to date) that the
second marriage of Fountain was after 1830. The date of the emanicpation of
Charlie is dated 17 Feb 1834, two years after the death notice of Elizabeth
Allen Rutledge. Why didn't Fountain free Charlie sooner? I haven't
found
any Slave census rolls that list Elizabeth or Fountain as owners. Maybe
Charlie was with the elusive husband and father of Fountain!
On the Jessamine Co KY tax roll of 1815 & 1816, Elizabeth is taxed on 3
horses. Question: If she had a slave, wouldn't she be taxed on that also?
In 1817, Jessamine Co KY tax roll, Fountain is listed on the tax roll with 3
horses. Did they list him instead of his mother and if so was it because he
was an adult? After 1816, Elizabeth A. Rutledge is not listed on any
census or tax roll and the only thing I have on her is that in 1825, she and
son Fountain were members of the Long Lick Baptist Church and in 1832 a
notice in the church records of her death. For 16 years, she wasn't with
Fountain, so where was she?
The will of Edmund Walker <"Edmund Walker, in his will of 1765 gave to his
daughter ELIZABETH WALKER, 2 negroes, Charlie and Buck." . The land was
given to the sons, slave to the daughters and granddaughters. How did
our
Elizabeth A. Rutledge acquire any of this Walker land? Was it by bequeath
from one of this Walker family between 1765 and 1799 when Elizabeth Allen
Rutledge & the two Walker women engaged Matthew William Walker to settle the
sale of land in Charlotte Co VA.
"From the Commissioners Deeds Jessamine County, Book A p. 18
Walker to Walker
Know all men by these pesents that we Mary Walker, Elizabeth Allen Rutledge
and Mary Walker (Junieress) all of the County of Jessamine and State of
Kentucky have nominated appointed and ordained Matthew William Walker our
local attorney in fact to negotiate all our business in Charlote County and
State of Virginia particularly to sell and convey a deed in fee simple a
certain tract of land lying baing (sic) and situated in the county of and
state aforesaid containing two hundred and eighty acres by survey adjoining
William Fears, John Carrier and Levi Blankinship and Joseph Chaffings and to
do all such other things that we might or could do if we were personally
present which shall be binding on us our heirs (symbol) jointly and
severally forever in we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals
this twenty fifth day of May Anno Domini 1799 Mary Walker - her mark,
Elizabeth A. Rutledge - her mark Mary Walker Junss? - her mark."
As you see, you have started me thinking again about these Rutledges and
asking questions! You can be sure that there is more to come!

Subject: Elizabeth Allen Rutledge: theory
Hello. This is a theory, only. Please let me know if you see anything in
this
or have an idea as to how to proceed. Travelin' John, you were so
helpful...
see anything here? Carole G. hope this puts hope back into the picture
and
Jim Small... hey, maybe we're related afterall!
Okay folks... can't seem to get this all together but I cannot wait any
longer... I hope I am able to reach Jim Small via the email address
above,
because I now believe that his ancestors may be ours, also. Read on. I
will repeat a lot of information, so forgive me. And we will need to do a
lot more research before we can prove any of this.
For some time now, Carole Gregory and I have been intrigued by the fact
that
Elizabeth Allen Rutledge (mother of Fountain) inherited land in Charlotte
Court House VA along with Walkers. So the primary goal in Donavon's and
my
trip a month ago to VA was to find out if she was a Walker or just how she
was related to them. It is through her that we hope to eventually find
Fountain's dad.
Theory: From what we discovered, I think it is plausible that Elizabeth
Allen Rutledge mother of Fountain Rutledge, was born Elizabeth Walker and
that she married an Allen (perhaps David) and when he died leaving her
with
5 young children, she married a Rutledge. (Chalkey Book III on wills,
landsales and other court appearances, reports that David Allen died
young.
In David Allen's will of September 1779, his wife Elizabeth and her
mother,
Mary Allen inherit. So also do Robert Allen, infant; John C. Allen,
infant;
James Allen, infant; David Allen, infant; and Mary Allen, infant.
Witnesses
were John Allen and Thomas Allen.)
But I get ahead of myself. First the Walker information. A very wealthy
man, Edmund Walker, in his will of 1765 gave to his daughter ELIZABETH
WALKER, 2 negroes, Charlie and Buck. See why this is important later on.
Are you with
me Carole? It appears that Edmund's children were quite young at the time
of his death.
Will of Edmund Walker (mother was Mary Holdcrop) Wife was Judith.
They had:
Edmund Townes Walker
James Walker
Judith Walker
Hannah Walker
ELIZABETH WALKER
Sarah Walker
Lucy Clark Walker
Alexander Walker
Frances Walker
Grandsons Edmund Walker- Joseph Scott
Walker
Daughter Mary Caventon
Grand daughter Mairy Caventon - Ursley
Caventon _Milly Caventon
Daughter Ann Clement
Grand Daughter Ann
Daughter Rebecca Macon
In this will dated 8 November 1765, Edmund is giving away plantations
(note
plural) and estates (note plural) to his sons. He gives slaves to his
daughters and granddaughters. Of particular interest to us is that he
gives
to his daughter Elizabeth Walker, 2 negros, Buck and CHARLIE.
Last month, Rutledge descendants in Charlotte Court House Virginia told us
that in the research they had done, they found no Rutledge's in that area
who owned slaves. We told them that our Fountain Rutledge had a slave and
that he emancipated his slave CHARLIE about 20 years before the civil war.
HOWEVER, when we later found the above information on Edmund Walker who
bequeaths a slave Charlie to his daughter Elizabeth, we began to feel that
Charlie belonged to Elizabeth and not Fountain, and that perhaps the slave
Charlie was from one of the Walker Plantations. I believe the
emancipation
of Charlie occured about the time of the death of our Elizabeth in 1835.
If
slavery was incompatible with Fountain's beliefs, he might have
emancipated
Charlie at that time. It is of course speculation, but when we struggled
and struggled through the myriad of records and finally came to slave
Charlie (if he is the same slave as those whose papers were found in
Jessamine KY) and found him to "belong" to an Elizabeth Walker... we felt
as if we had found a clue. It is fascinating to think of the slave
Charlie
being the person who will link us to our lost grandfather.
This is the first time I have felt hopeful about finding a link to
Fountain's Dad. Again: (Theory) Perhaps Elizabeth Walker (daughter of
wealthy land owner Edmund Walker who willed her a slave named Charlie)
married
a man by the name of Allen (Allens were prominant in the CCH area of
Virginia.) They might have had 5 children before Allen died. AFterwhich,
Elizabeth WAlker Allen married a Rutledge. By now she is more advanced in
age and therefore has only the two children, Elizabeth and Fountain.
More theory. It is possible that our unknown Rutledge was William who had
at least two brothers John and James and one sister Catherine (Marshall).
James Rutledge had a son Edward who is the father of Rosanna, of "Rosy
Ann's
Bible" found in Fort Collins Co near where our people lived. Rosanna
never
married and
died within 2 years of Fountain's birth. Her mother Sarah and her brother
George inherit. George Rutledge is executor.
Edward and Sarah Rutledge are the parents of this possible William. They
lived on 250 acres at Flag Springs on Middle River, patent from Kerr,
which
property
they gave to son George. Chalkey, book III. George Rutledge's land became
a marker for others. As did John and Thomas' land, we frequently find
markers on the lands of the oldest settlers.
There is a certain amount of connection with these VA Rutledge's and South
Carolina. Thomas Rutledges will of 10 October 1785 (wife Jean) gave 100
acres on Fishing Creek Branch in South Carolina to sons Thomas and Ed. I
can't find
my notes right now, but the afore mentioned William left (apparently for
acreage in South Carolina). Information about him is scanty.
Questions. Questions. Questions. Is William, son of Edward and Sarah,
the
father of Fountain? Did he marry Elizabeth (Walker) Allen? Or were they
living together without the benefit of matrimony as people sometimes say?
Is he the William whose name was crossed out and replaced with Elizabeth
Allen Rutledge's name in the land ledger? If he is our elusive
grand-father,
why did he go to South Carolina and Elizabeth with children stay in
Jessamine
County, KY?
Help. Help. Help. CBR

Hello All....
I'm attempting to learn more of a Benjamin Rutledge who appears in the 1830 Fed census in
Clark Co., KY. I received a pension file for a Benjamin Rutledge of TN, hoping they may be
the same person, however, at this point it would appear to be two different individuals. I
post the attached info in the hope it may help someone working on the TN Rutledges.
War of 1812: Declaration for Pension State of Tennessee, County of Lewis On this 25th day
of January, 1872 personally appeared....Benjamin Rutledge, aged seventy-six years, a
resident of 5th Civil District, County of Lewis, State of Tennessee, who being duly sworn
according to law, declares that he is married; that his wife's name was Elizabeth Easley
to whom he was married in Lawrence County, AL., on the 1st day of November, 1822; that he
served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the
war of 1812; that he is the identical Benjamin Rutledge who was enrolled a private in
Captain Alexander Hill's compay, Col Metcalfs regiment, Gen Carrolls brigade, at or near
Nashville, Tenn. on the 1st day of November 1814, and was honorably discharged at
Nashville, Tenn on the (blank) day of (blank) , 1815; that he has received two land
warrants for eighty acres each, one of which he obtained about the year 1852, the other in
the year 1856, the numbers are unknown; that he, at no time during the late rebellion
against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the
Government, ( add'l statement of loyalty, will support the Constitution, isn't receiving
any other retirement, etc.)
Portions of an affidavit mentions children: Affidavit signed by Robert Rose and William
Simonton, states they reside in Lawrence County Tennessee, both have known Benjamin and
Elizabeth Rutledge for about twenty six years and "that they were then living
together as man and wife and were recognized as such in the community where they resided.
They had several children when witness first became acquainted with them. One of said
children viz: Murray Rutledge, if now living, would be about fifty years old." (Other
children not named) Signed: Nov. 14th, 1878
Widow's Claim for Pension:
State of Tennessee, County of Wayne On the 11th dayof April, 1878....Elizabeth Rutledge, a
resident of the 1st Civil District in the County of Wayne, aged 71 years.......swears she
is the widow of Benjamin Rutledge....her maiden name was Easley and that she was married
to Benjamin Rutledge on or about the year 1830 in the County of Lawrence and State of
Alabama by Rev Moore a regular minister and that she knows of no record evidence of said
marriage and she supposes said minister of the Gospel who performed the ceremony is long
since dead as he was then very old and she knows of no living witness who was present at
the marriage.
She further declares that said Benjamin Rutledge her husband died at Wayne County
Tennessee on or about the 24th day of March 1874 of rheumatism and paralysis. (She lists
Waynesboro, TN as an address)
A supplemental statement to the application for Benjamin states "that he was at and
participated as a private in the Battle on the 8th day of January 1815 near the City of
New Orleans in the State of Louisiana." He served in a brigade "which was a
portion of the Army commanded by Maj. Genl. Andrew Jackson."
U.S. Pension Agency Memo, Knoxville, TN. April 11, 1895 I hereby report that the name
Elizabeth Rutledge, wid of Benjamin, Pri, Cap. Alex Hill's Co. Tenn. Mil, who was a
pensioner on the rolls of this Agency under Certificate No 29283 and who was last paid at
$12.00 to 4 November, 1893, has been dropped because of death.
Given the above, I don't believe this can be the Benjamin listed in the KY census of
1830...should anyone have clues re: the KY Benjamin, I would appreciate a note. John
Rutledge in Oregon
To All.....
Recently, while entering Civil War pension info, I found the following for John W.
Rutledge and thought it may be of interest to those with Rutledge ties in Clark Co KY and
Jefferson Co. IN.
This is the first time I have seen a pension award given to someone other than a soldier's
surviving spouse...in this case, to Joseph Rutledge, father of the deceased soldier, John
W. Rutledge.
John W. Rutledge enlisted in Co. I, 6th Reg. IN Voluteers (Crittenden's Reg) on Oct. 10,
1861, at North Madison, IN. His term was for three years, however, on Feb. 8, 1862, he
died. The obituary found on page 2, col. 4, of the Feb. 24, 1862 edition of the Madison
Evening Courier states: "Died: On the 8th of Feb., at Woodsonville, KY., of camp
measles, John W. Rutledge, a member of Co. I, 6th IN. Reg., aged 17 yrs and 5 days."
He is buried in Smyrna Graveyard, Smyrna Township, Jefferson Co. IN. He left neither
widow, or children.
There are several affadavits in the file attesting that John W. was a minor son of Joseph
Rutledge and Elizabeth M (Rowlinson) Rutledge. It includes the marriage license of Joseph
and Elizabeth, dated Jan 11, 1844. Marrried by Jacob M Cox in Jefferson Co., IN. The
affadavit states John W. was born on Feb. 3, 1845. It also gives the date of death for
Elizabeth Rutledge, his mother, as Oct. 13, 1887. This affadavit written by John H.
Reynolds, her physician, based on his "Day Book" notes.
Joseph applied for pension, based on his son's service, on Aug. 13, 1890. He stated his
age as 72 years. (Cemetery records show a dob of Feb. 5, 1818 in KY and dod as June 16,
1906 in Jefferson Co., IN). The War Dept shows a date of death as June 18, 1906.
The basis for his claim centered on declining health and no means of support excepting his
own physical labor... and that his minor son was a major source of family income preceding
his death. He mentions the income he received from enlistment bounties (about $300), plus
a $100 bounty received thru the estate of his deceased wife, Elizabeth. He mentions
children who had aided in his support: Son James, Daughters Katherine and Mary. A deceased
daughter (unnamed) earned some income by teaching school. (This daughter most likely
Catherine, dob Dec. 25, 1848, dod Sept 30, 1879. Source: Cemetery record) My file for
Joseph shows add'l children, Lewis, Almon and William, however, they are not mentioned in
the application.
I also show the father Joseph, as a son of Jacob Rutledge and Catherine (Chana) Rutledge.
Jacob was from Clark Co. KY, a son of Joseph Rutledge Sr who migrated to KY from NC. (From
John W., the line was Joseph, Jacob, Joseph, John, Isaac)
An interesting affadavit is included from William R. Craig, a soldier who enlisted and
served with John W. William tells that he was detailed to take the ill John W to the
"measles hospital" near Woodsonville, KY. He visited John W every day and got
him placed in the care of James Craig, his father, who was a nurse at the hospital. As
John's condition worsened, William sought and received a pass for Joseph Rutledge to come
and take his son home, but John W. died before his father could be notified. Willaim
Craig, aided by John's sergeant James Huckleberry, built a coffin from "rough lumber
we got at a mill nearby" and sent John's body home.
If anyone is working on this particular family, I would appreciate source info to prove
Joseph Rutledge a son of Jacob Rutledge who moved from Clark Co. KY to Jefferson Co., IN.
Thanks.

Thanks Jean! The day we found this, Donavon and I looked at each other in amazement and
asked simultaneously "What happened to Mary?" We were tracing backward and knew
a Mary as his wife. If the Vockerys had found a marriage between Mary and Fountain, in the
late 1820s or early 30s it would have shown up in their book, right?
Here is what might have happened: Fountain married Judy Finney in 1823 (fact), our
ancestor John was born in 1826 (fact), Carole Gregory believes there is also a sister
Elizabeth) and then sometime shortly after, Judy may have died. Perhaps in child birth? We
do not have her death date nor do we have a marriage date of Fountain and Mary, but
suddenly we find Fountain and Mary have a girl Mary Ann (abt 1835). To compound matters,
we do not know for sure who Mary Ann married - she said James Rutledge but there is no
mention of him in a thorough obituary, and her grand daughter said: "Grandma never
married."
Would you watch for a date for the marriage of Fountain and Mary please? Possibilities for
her last name include McAlister (various spellings) and Palmer. She was born about 1796 in
Pennsylvania and died in Lewis Co Mo Sept. 18, 1881.
And if we could impose on you further - in your research, if you come across Judy Finney
Rutledge's death notice, we would be really happy! Sounds silly to be happy over a death
notice..... Thanks! CBR
Hi Jean, Yes, a death notice for Judy Finney Rutledge would make us happy, a marriage for Fountain and a Mary would put us even happier! But a record of the elusive father of Fountain Rutledge would put us in orbit! Carole G in CA

Update on "Unidentified Ancestor" pic: The "Unidentified Ancestor"
painting found two weeks ago has been narrowed down. Determined from notes as Dad's
"great grandfather," and since it was in with the Hance and Rutledge items this
indicates most likely Greenberry Hance b.1819 TN or Joseph Rutledge b.c.1810 SC. We will
rule out Dad's other two great grandfathers: James B. Gage b.1804 GA and Samuel Reddick
b.c.1770 VA.
A fine art appraiser friend of a client looked over the picture, scraped and sniffed(?)
it, estimates it to be 150 to 175 years old! He referred to the dress this ancestor was
wearing as "the early 1800s attire of a gentleman of the times."
Also received yesterday from my AZ cousin, William H. Thayer a CD with pics he scanned for
us from his mother's archives. More shots of the George Washington Hance family, Joseph
Rutledge family, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, obituaries. Have yet to finish
absorbing this great material.

Wiley Blount Rutledge, Jr. was born 20 Jul 1894 in Cloverport KY and
died 10 Sep 1949 in York Co. ME. He is buried in Green Mountain Cemetery
in Boulder Co. CO.
He was an attorney, teacher, dean, and US Supreme Court justice. He was
appointed to the court by FDR.
He married on 28 Aug 1917 in Buncombe Co. NC to Annabel Person. She
taught Greek at Maryville College, where I think they met. I think they
had 3 children.
Wiley Blount Rutledge Sr. was born 21 Oct 1861 in Bledsoe Co. TN, and
died 6 Jul 1944.
He was a circuit-riding minister. He m/1 Mary Lou Wigginton ca. 1893 in
Bullitt Co. KY. They had at least 3 children, Wiley Jr. being the
eldest.
After Mary Lou's death, Wiley Sr. remarried Tamsey Cordelia Cate, and
they had at least 3 children.
Wiley Sr. was one of the youngest children of Thomas Rutledge (ca. 1803
VA - 1870) and Thomas' third wife Jane Hall, who was previously married
to a Pope. I'm not sure, but I think Wiley Sr. was likely the youngest.
Best wishes,
Darryl
I will try once again to send this family. I am especially interested in

Feel free to jump in here and correct me or throw me a lifeline. Joyce ------------- Dear
Joyce,
Hhere is correspondance from a couple of years back. See if anything connects. I think you
need to contact Joan Tharp for information on Joseph and Elizabeth Speer. The last I
remember, her address was: jtharp@foothill.net I think you belong in her family or she in
yours! Good luck! CBR ---------- Hi Carol, Carole, and Joan:
I saw your post re the request for info from Joan Tharp in which you ask who the parents
are of Isaac Archibald Rutledge...Isaac was born on June 2, 1828 in Clark Co., KY. He
married Millie Martin Bradley on March 7, 1851 in Clark Co.,KY. He died on March 19, 1866
in Hendricks Co., IN. His father was Henry Rutledge, born 1798 in Winchester, Clark
Co.,KY.
His mother was Catherine Boulware (various spellings on her last name), who was born in
1791, in N.C.
Henry was the son of John Rutledge, Sr. and Valentine Murphy, of Winchester, Clark Co.,
KY. John Sr. was the son of Joseph Rutledge, Sr., who was born in N.C., lived in Clark
Co.,KY and died in Cumberland Co., KY.
Millie Martine Bradley, after the death of Isaac, married Isaac's brother John P.
Rutledge. John P. was the oldest son of Henry, and after Henry's death in 1833, was made
guardian of Isaac. After the death of John P.'s first wife, Honor Aldridge, he married
Millie Martin, and they lived in Middle Grove, near Paris, in Monroe Co., MO.
If you would like more detailed info on this line, please let me know and I can send
family group sheets. I have looked futher for connections to Fountain, but have not come
up with a tie to this line. My last correspondence was with Carol Brunner Rutledge and
while memory is dim, I think we were trying to tie the Clark Co. Rutledges to Rutledges in
Jasemine Co., KY. If Mary Ann was a niece to Isaac and Millie Martin, then are lines do
tie...but I still haven't found the tie to Fountain....
Hope this helps...Let me know if you want more detail...John Rutledge

Rachel,
This appears to be the combined data for two different Isaac Rutledges. My 3rd ggf, Isaac
Archibald Rutledge, was the son of Henry and Catherine Boulware Rutledge. He was born 2
June 1832 in Clark Co, KY (which would make him 17 on census day 1850 and 27 on census day
1860); he married Millie Martin Bradley on 7 Mar 1851 in Winchester, Clark, KY; he died 19
Mar 1866 in Lizton, Hendricks, Indiana and is buried in the Vieley Cemetery there.

Don, Had gone to library tonight and found a lot of other information on Missouri
lines, Spilman, Hewlett, Boucher, and 1 John Rutledge, who I believe may be John Rutledge,
Jr, s/o John Rutledge and Jane Gaw Brown Rutledge. If they left Jackson County, TN about
1840-1843, then by the Civil War, if John Jr had been born 1845 or so, in 1865 he would
have been 19-20 years old! more on this later.
I have 2 references for my Gaw-Hewlett-Spilman lines. The first being John Jasper
Spilman's, The History of the Spilman Family written in 1909; the second is a later copy I
copied from another Spilman cousin in Fort Worth, I had met last summer. This cousin in
Sharon. THE SPILMAN PAPERS, COMPILED BY MALCOLM L. MELVILLE, (with DEDICATION TO THE
MEMORIAL OF THE GERMANIA COLONIES IN VIRGINIA, INCORPORATED in memory of NANNIE BUCHANAN
(SPILMAN) MELVILLE, May 1965 mentions in Chaper VI, page 90:

"Some question exists as to the place of Thomas Spilman's birth. All available
indications are that Young Tom's parental homes was in King George County, yet the D.A.R.
records and John Jasper's "History of the Spilman Family" both give his
birthplace as Culpepper County, Virginia." ...About the year 1785 Young Tom married
Mary Massey, daughter of Colonel Massey.
She was born in Virginia in 1765 and died in Allen County, Kentucky, in 1835. Mary
produced a family of thirteen children most of whom survived the rigors of the the
frontier to marry and have large families of their own.
On May 21, 1788 Thomas witnessed a deed in Culpepper County when his brother James deeded
land to William Spilman, another brother. (Culpepper DB "O", p 476). Two years
later three Spilman boys, Frank, James and Young Tom, settled in Kentucky; James and Frank
went to Campbell County and Young Tom to Warren County where he took up 200 acres of land
on the headwaters of Difficult Creek.
On September 10 1798 certificate #1933 was issued to Thomas Spilman by the State of
Kentucky, the text of which is given here in full:
CERTIFICATE #1933
We do hereby certify that Thomas Spilman is entitled to 200 acres of second rate Land by
virtue of his having improved same agreebly to an act of the assembly entitled "An
Act for Encouraging and Granting Relief to Settlers" and located as follows: at the
head Spring east of fork of Difficult Creek Beginning at at black oak and dogwood running
Northwardly to a Dividing line between John Gibson and said Spilman, thence Westwardly and
Southwardly for Quantity so as to Include his Improvement. Given under our hands this 10th
day of September 1798.
Richard Young
Robert Mosby
Jas Brown
On August 28, 1799, a grant deed conveying the above property was made to THOMAS SPILMAN.
(Warren County, KY. DB 10-S.G.R., p 190) It was signed by Charles Scott, Governor of
Kentucky and J. Bledsoe, Secretary of State.
Some years later Thomas and his family moved to Allen County, Kentucky, where he died in
1822 of pneumonia when the "cold plague" swept the country. His wife survived
him by thirteen years and died in the same county in 1835. Issue: 13 children.
Don't know if this helped but it was a good typing exercise without stopping!! I guess I
was thinking of Rachel Clemons's e-mails about Massey-Rutledge-Sutton and not Spilman?
Will wait and see for further developments!

Hello, all.
I'm looking for parents/siblings/descendants of Anderson Rutledge, b. abt. 1821 in KY, d.
aft. 1890 in Texas (Cooke Co.?). He married Sarah Emery 30 Sept. 1847 in Highland Co.,
Ohio; they had 8 children: Catherine, Laura, Morgan (all born in Ohio), Alonzo Grady (my
gggrandfather), Roland, Hazard, Melvina, and Francis C. (all born in Illinois, probably
Pike Co. or Jacksonville area). (I think Anderson's mother was named Elizabeth, as the
1860 census shows an Elizabeth Rutledge, age 54, b. KY, living with the family.)
Anderson served in the 99th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during C.W. Sometime between
1870 and 1880 the family went to north Texas. Anderson's second wife, as shown on the 1880
Grayson Co., Texas, was named Nancy, and he married a woman named Elizabeth Chapman in
Grayson Co. in 1881. Anderson was in Cooke Co. for the 1890 Veterans Census and I can find
no record of him after that.
If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate hearing from
you.
