Hello,
I'm a "lurker" on this list (which I enjoy in digest mode) since no one
seems to be related to or heard of my Rutledge ancestors. Anyway, I
thought I'd jump into the fray regarding the use of "Scotch-Irish". One
of the other Rootsweb lists that I belong to is the Scotch-Irish list.
Yes, it's Scotch-Irish. The URL of the website for the list is:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~merle/
On that page you can follow a link to read why it's so titled. It's an
extremely informative list and you might enjoy reading the archives.
As long as I'm writing I'll mention my Rutledges again. They are John
R. Rutledge (4G Grandfather, born abt 1764, place unknown, maybe South
Carolina) who was in Feliciana Parish, Louisiana by at least 1789. His
daughter, Sarah Ann, was born 1789, in Feliciana Parish and died 1873
in Livingston County, Kentucky. She married William Lemon on 6 June
1806 in Feliciana Parish. Family legend has it that William was a
boatman who rafted down the Mississippi where he suffered a shipreck
near a man who was fishing from his own property (in Louisiana). That
man was supposedly John R. Rutledge. William Lemon later returned to
Kentucky along with the Rutledges and they are all buried there.
Sara
John-
Therein lies some of my frustration. Edward Crockett Rutledge (the source?
of oft repeated family lore that we are related to Davey Crockett) was born in
VA about 1817 (as best I can determine), married Martha (possibly a cousin),
shows up in IN census of 1850 with a son (William E.) born in Missouri. The
family Bible (I now have and want to restore) has many Rutledges dating back
to the 1700's but without locations. The names and dates do little to help
with so many Rutledges and so many common first names when the locations are
not
included.
I want to support others with similar "brick walls" because I believe that
one or two solid facts can bring down many walls.

"...Maturin Babin inhabited lands on the south side of Bayou Catahoula
as early as 1800. John Hevert, then aged fifty-seven years, testified
to this fact, and was believed, while one John Rutledge, a witness for
John Carroll, and a professional liar, would not be relied upon by the
commissioners. Prior to 1813 a man by the name of Mecom was killed
during a dispute over the ownership of lands on Bayou Mason. One Combs
was accused of this crime, but he and Rutledge fled. Fraudulent entries
were common and Rutledge and others were brought forward to swear to
their validity."

Hi all, Found something interesting here. Note that Eliza (E.S.) is said to be a lineal
descendant of John Rutledge of SC. I have her as Elizabeth Susan Rutledge, wife of Thomas
Grimball Bettison and daughter of my Joseph Rutledge and Esther Susannah Robert! I show
she died October 7, 1894 so this bio must have been written in the late 1800's.
Interesting that she was believed to be directly related to John only 2 generations
distant... Any thoughts? Cyndi BETTISON, David R., Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana
Submitted by Randy DeCuir D. R. Bettison, deputy sheriff and jailer, of Avoyelles Parish,
was born in Rapides Parish, La., in 1849. He is the son of Thomas G. and Eliza S.
(Rutledge) Bettison. T. G. Bettison was born and reared near Woodville, Miss. He
immigrated to Louisiana in 1818, and became a pioneer of Rapides Parish, entering a great
amount of Government land around the present site of Cheneyville. He married close to
Cheneyville, and lived in Rapides Parish till 1850, when he moved into Avoyelles Parish,
and lived on Bayou Chopegue5 till the time of his death, 1873. Mrs. E. S. Bettison was
born in Georgia, and became a resident of Rapides Parish, La., while a young lady. She
became the mother of sixteen children by her first and only marriage, and is still alive,
residing in Texas. She is a lineal descendant of John Rutledge, one of the signers of the
Declaration of Independence. Our subject grew to manhood in Avoyelles Parish, and received
a limited education. He was married in 1878, and remained on the farm till 1882, when he
entered the livery business in Evergreen, La., where he remained till 1888, when he came
to Marksville and there opened the livery business. He reached Marksville with limited
capital, but has done well, and has accumulated considerable property in the short period
he has been there. He has been deputy sheriff of Avoyelles for six years, and parish
jailer for nearly three years. He married Miss Ada Keller of Holmesville, La., and is the
father of three children: D. L., Susan and Bessie.
