FROM OHIO TO IDAHO:

This maybe of some interest to the researchers of Rutledge in MD that moved on to OH and then disappear.

Recently I posted info concerning a Mable Rutledge and her marriage in 1901 to Henry S. Day in Washington Co., Idaho.   When searching the census in Washington Co ID, I came across a Samuel M. Rutledge.   Thinking Mable might be part of his family and not of my Rutledge group,  I set out to eliminate that possibility.
In 1900, Washington Co., ID census,  Samuel M Rutledge is listed as the stepson of Harry/Henry (spelling/handwriting glitch) Featherston(e).  Samuel is 34 single and born in OH.  Also listed is Frank L. 24  NV., a son of Harry/Henry Featherston(e).   More checking resulted in:
1880 Mineral Springs, White Pine Co NV census
 Featherstone, Henry/harry 38 Eng
   Hester  43 OH OH OH
Frank L 3  NV Eng OH
   Lillian  2 NV Eng OH
Rutledge, Samuel 14 OH MD OH
Rutledge, Lizzie   11 OH MD OH
1870 census index only produced one Samuel age 4
 TurtleCreek, Warren Co OH
Samuel 4, OH; Eliza (Lizzie?) 2 OH and Harriet (Hester??) 32 OH.....  Harriet is working in one household as a servant and the 2 children are living in separate households but all 3 are residing in households next to each other... no clue as to the name of the missing father Rutledge (that is not unusual!!!)  that was born in MD.    This maybe a completely different group than the Rutledge that appear with Featherston(e) in 1880 in NV but there are similiarities.(sic)
I followed Samuel M Rutledge through the census from 1900, 1910, 1920 in Washington Co ID then to Malheur Co OR in 1930.  There appears in the Oregon death index a Samuel Rutledge that died  19 Dec 1934 in Portand OR.    In Cambridge-Salubria, Washington Co., ID cemetery are listings for Harry Featherston, Hester Featherstone b 25 Feb 1837; d 3 June 1911 and Samuel Rutledge b 1866 Dec 19; d 1934 all in the same cemetery plot.
Samuel M Rutledge never seems to have been married.  On all of the census he is listed as single. As for Lizzie (Elizabeth?)  Rutledge - that is for someone else to find!

No sign of a Mable in anything I found concerning this Rutledge family  & that leads me to believe she is not part of Samuel's family group.    More extensive research (death certificate) could give a name to Samuel's father and confirm Hester/Harriett as his mother - that is if an informed person gave the information for the death certificate!

PERRY COUNTY:

Catherine RUTLEDGE DARLING (24 May 1849 - 30 Dec 1886) was the second wife
of “Capt.” Robert R. BIGGS (16 Feb 1824-1906). His first wife was Nancy White
(12 Sept 1828 - 11 May 1863) and they married in Perry Co., Ohio on 15 April
1847. Robert and Catherine were married on 27 August 1877. Catherine was
presumably a widow, being previously married to a man whose last name was
DARLING. She had a son in her first marriage Ora Darling, who was later adopted  by
Robert Biggs and went by the name Ora Biggs. By the time of the birth of
Robert and Catherine's first son, Manley Robert in 1878, they were living in
Osborne, Kansas. They most likely married there.

Good Morning Donna...

He is listed on the 1820 census in Vernon Township,Trumball Co., Ohio.
Just down the page is Michael Rutledge & Elizabeth Rutledge also, so
feel that has to be him. He has 3 males between 16 & 26, 1 male 45 & up
& 1 female 45 & up.
I printed the page off the census, and I can try scanning it in, but I'm
not sure how it will scan. I can mail you a copy if you would like.

MIAMI VALLEY, OHIO

William H. Rutledge, now deceased, was during his  useful life one of the
leading agriculturists of Butler county, and when he died  he left behind him a
finely developed farm, where his family still reside. He  was born at
Rossville, Ohio, May 16, 1845, a son of James and Mary (Mustard)  Rutledge. James
Rutledge was born in Pennsylvania, although his parents were  natives of Virginia,
and his wife was born in West Hamilton, Ohio. In young  manhood, James
Rutledge came to Butler county, Ohio, where he died in 1849,  having been a teamster
all of his active life. He and his wife had the following  children: Mary,
Martha, Margaret, Sarah, William H., and an unnamed son. William  H. Rutledge
attended the schools of his neighborhood, and remained with his  family until his
enlistment
Page 609for service during the  Civil war, September 10, 1861, in Company I,
35th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at  Hamilton, Ohio, and was sent south. He
received his honorable discharge at  Chattanooga, Tenn., September 23, 1864, having
participated in many battles and  skirmishes, and done his full duty as a
soldier. Returning home to Butler  county, Mr. Rutledge continued to live with
his mother and sisters until his  marriage in 1883, when he began farming in
Lemon township, conducting the  Hoffman farm for twenty-eight years. In 1913 he
bought the present farm of the  family, comprising 186 acres of land, two and
one-half miles west of Monroe,  Ohio, R. F. D. No. 1, Kyle, Ohio, where he
carried on general farming until his  death, June 21, 1915. His remains were
interred in the beautiful “city of the  Dead" at Hamilton, Ohio. January 4, 1883,
Mr. Rutledge was united in marriage  with Mary Hoffman, of Fairfield township,
Butler county, a daughter of George  and Mary Barbara (Dingfelder) Hoffman,
both of whom were born in Germany. When  young people they came to the United
States, locating at Pitts burg, Pa., where  they met and were married. They then
came to Ohio, and secured a farm of wild  land in Fairfield township, Butler
county, which they cleared and developed. Mr.  Hoffman died on this farm in
April, 1887, his widow surviving him until 1911,  when she passed away at the
age of ninety-two years. Five of the nine Hoffman  children are now living,
namely: George, who is a farmer of Plainview, Texas;  Barbara, who is the widow of
Joseph Matson of Monroe station, Ohio; Louise, her  twin sister, who is
unmarried; Anna, who is also unmarried; and Mary, who is  Mrs. Rutledge. The
children of Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge are as follows: Anna  Louise, Martha Elizabeth,
and William Stanley, all of whom are living with their  mother. Mr. Rutledge was
a member of the Christian church of Hamilton, Ohio, but  his family belong to
the United Presbyterian church of Monroe, Ohio. He was a  staunch Republican,
but did not care for office. A quiet, unassuming man, Mr.  Rutledge devoted
himself to his family, and worked long and hard to provide  properly for them,
and when he died had the satisfaction of knowing that he had  made for them
one of the best rural homes in the county, and that he also left  behind him a
reputation for scrupulous honesty, and unflinching adherence to his  word. He
was widely known in the county which gave him birth, and when he passed  away,
he was mourned by many who realized that a good citizen and upright man  was
gone from their midst. Memoirs

During the summer of the year 1810, James Hill and family, consisting  of a wife and six children, and Samuel Tidd, a brother-in-law, with his wife,  left the shore of Lake Erie, in Ashtabula County for that far away "land of promise," Zanestown (now Zanesfield), of the superior advantages of which the  most wonderful stories were told.

The mode of transit, a team of horses; the  route along blazed lines, though dense woods, in many places almost impassable.  At last, after many wearisome days of travel, they reached the end of their journey.

They remained at Zanesfield seven years, removing to the southwest  portion of what is now Richland Township during the early summer of 1817. Mr. Hill erected his cabin upon the farm now owned by James Sims. Samuel Tidd settled just south, in what is now McArthur Township. None of either family are  now
living in the vicinity except Mrs. Nancy Colvin, a daughter of Mr. Hill, who now lives in Hardin County, and to whom the writer is indebted for many facts of  early history.

Soon after Mr. Hill's arrival Thomas Rutledge and Thomas Burton,  who had a numerous family, located in the immediate vicinity Genealogy and Local History in Logan County, Ohio History of Logan  County and Ohio (1880)

On Ancestry we find a William Rutledge born 16 aug 1794 Baltimore Co.  Md
died 1 June 1872 Thurston Co. Washington buried in the Pioneer Cem.

married 1st Margaret Moore born March 1792 Pa married about 1817 Pa
Married 2nd Mary Coe born 1809  married about 1859
 Married 3 ?
the marriage to Margaret Moore list 10 children
no children listed for 2nd and 3rd marriages.

I am sure the information about Mary Coe for this line is not possible,
 but
 then
 someone may know the answer.
 I have in my line
William Rutledge born 1808 Turmbull Co. Ohio died Mar 31 1860 Trumbull Co.

married Mary Coe 1828 Trumbull Co. Ohio they are both buried in Turmbull

My  William Rutledge was the son of Michael Rutledge born 1777  Baltimore

Lydia Ackley was born 27 Mar 1774 Connecticut married 1808 in Turmbull Co.

 Michael Rutledge
William Rutlege born 1808 was their son.
So who is the William Rutledge born1794 Baltimore Md. who came to
 Thurston,
Washington. ? Could he be a son of Michael Rutledge and Mary Burns who
 had
children born in Pennsylvania in 1801, 1802, 1803.
Also  this William Rutledge 1794 showing children born in Morgan Co.  Ohio
would be related to my John Deason Rutledge born 1773 who went to  Morgan
 Co.
 Ohio
and raised a family there. The more I look at the information I am
 thinking
 the
William Rutledge born 1794 has to be a son of Michael Rutledge and Mary
 Burns
who had children born in Pennsylvania 1801, 1802, 1803.
William Rutledge born 1794 had a child born in Lancaster Pa 1818.
Anyone got any answer for this William Rutledge 1794.

Hi Pat,
Think this William D. Rutledge and Rebecca Sigler's family.
History of Licking County compiled N.N. Hill Jr., A A Graham & Co. Pub.
1881. p.749
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, there is an article on him.  It says he was from Virginia
Rutledge ancestry but I have not been able to prove that.  I had always

Hi Jan and Happy New Year to all,
Congratulations on the new computer, but as we know nothing is that
simple... I am still without my genealogy program that is locked in my old
computer.  My computer wizard son in law is down with the flu & bronchitis
so hope for a solution to my computer problem is off for awhile.

Your mention of Birton and Myra Rutledge got me searching for these Rutledge
(and a break from the never-ending football games) and hopefully a
connection to my Fountain Rutledge family.  So far nothing positive and that
is not surprising!

I did find Myra in the census and she was mentioned as Myra Rizor in her
sons, William Lawrence Rutledge, 1940 obit.   I have a theory that she is
Sophronia Elmira/Almira Johnson, daughter of William B and Lydia Johnson.
1880 Pleasant, Hardin Co OH census, Almira is 3 months old (born in Mar)this
checks with the 1900 census where her birthdate is Mar 1880.   But you
probably have that info.  In the 1900 Pleasant, Hardin Co OH census she is
living with her parents and is a widow - name is Sophronia E.Rutledge age
20; son Wm L Rutledge is age 1.  This means Birton died before the 1900
census. Birton may have been a middle name??   Also found a marriage record
for Syphroniel(sic?) Myra Rutledge to James Calvin Rizor 27 May 1905, Hardin
Co., OH.  This fits into the birthdates of their 3 sons - Jacob Marion Rizor
1906; James Arthur Rizor 1910; Roy Justin Rizor 8 June 1912 in Hardin Co.,
OH. http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/person.aspx?pid=131967055

The ancestor of this Rutledge family, George Rutledge b 1780 in Ireland and
his family was in PA.  The only connection to PA that I have found so far
for Fountain Rutledge (b 1796 KY) is that it was the birthplace of
Fountain's second wife Mary - surname probably McCallister - Her father most
probably was named James McCallister.  So many theories, not enough proof!!

Fountain Rutledge's son John Rutledge named his first born son George
Washington Rutledge... no reason for the naming of George but then nothing
is certain in the Rutledge research - just more bricks!

Happy New Year to everyone!!!!

Santa was good to me and brought me a new computer. There's been a snag
with it, so today, it should finally be hooked up for my use. This is a
suggestion to everyone.... start backing your files up by burning a CD,
as the new computers don't have a floppy drive!!!!! This is where we ran
into problems. My son in law was trying to put a floppy drive in, and
there's something about the motherboard not accepting it. (Now remember,
I only know enough about computers to turn them off & on. How they work
internally is Greek to me!) Anyway, the support tech has been out 3
times now, and they have replaced the mother board, tried other options,
and finally yesterday, my son in law went & bought another new part, and
it was working last night, so they are going to transfer all my files
today and get me going on this new one. Trust me, I have a CD burnt for
everything, because I'm really leary!  He said I should have enough
memory on this new one to list everyone in the US as a relative!  In
fact, he told me that if I got rid of my dial-up and got DSL, that I'd
have to "run" down the street to keep up with it!  I guess he doesn't
know that isn't the way to make brownie points with his mother in law! LOL!

Jim.... while working on those Ohio Rutledge's, if you come upon a
Birton (1872- bef 1930) & Myra (ca 1880-?) with a son William Lawrence
(1898-1940) in the Hardin Co., Ohio area, think of me!!!!! Birton is the
great grandson of my George Rutledge (1780-1866).

I didn't have a lot of luck on the Rutledge, but Santa was exceptionally
good to me this year! Christmas night, I was sitting here & a memo
popped up that there was something posted on genforum in response to my
post. I hadn't posted there in years, but when I looked, it was a 2nd
cousin of mine on my mom's side. He had called me about 14 years ago,
and said that he'd send me a bunch of info when he got home, but he had
lost my name & address by the time his vacation was over, and thus I
never heard from him again. I'd tried many times but had no luck in
locating him. He was an only child, and his parents were gone, so no one
knew about him. Well, there he was, out of the blue, and we have been in
contact every day this week by email & by phone, so things are really
falling into place for me on mom's side! He even has the deed from our
great-great grandfather's property & a family Bible, so what more could
I ask for. I just hope that next year, Santa brings me a break-thru on
my Rutledge line and gets me going again with that line!

I guess things aren't that bad on the Rutledge line, as I helped connect
Carole G  & Don with my cousin on my Lutrell line. I also got a lot of
Rutledge info for my 2 friends Chuck Rutledge & Judy Hook, who are both
searching their Rutledge tree. I just find it strange that there are 5
of us "Rutledges" here within 12 miles of each other, and none of us
connect. Oh well, I'll keep  plugging away!

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and am wishing you all the very
best for the New Year!!!!!  Jan in IL

Hi All,

We appear to have touched on the Ohio Rutledge's once again and I cannot
help but post my family again.  Do any of the following names look failure
to anyone.  Thanks for looking.  We believe their parents could have been
James and Margarette who hailed from somewhere in Pennsylvania.

Thomas Armstrong RUTLEDGE, born March 21, 1802, died February 3, 1853, in
Amesville, Athens, OH

Mary Ann RUTLEDGE, born November 19, 1810, died April 23, 1892, in Gratiot,
Muskingum Co., OH

Edward RUTLEDGE, born March, 1812, died before 1892 in OH

George RUTLEDGE, born May 16, 1815, died June 2, 1865, in Mt. Sterling,
Muskingum Co., OH

James RUTLEDGE, born July 13, 1818, died before 1892 in OH

Hi Stephanie~~
According to Rachel Clemons' book, "My Rutledge Family...Book II...",
Michael b. 1777, is the son of Michael Rutledge b. about 1754 Baltimore Co,
MD and died bef 1820 and Elizabeth ________________ .

He is also, according to her book, a brother to my 3 great grandmother, Ruth
b. about 1796/5.  In a msg I have from Rachel dated June 11, 1999, she
states:  "Family tradition has it that Elizabeth Rutledge, a widow, moved to
PA from MD*, (PA was really Trumbull Co., OH, which is on the PA border.)
she brought seven dau's and Michael as well as 2 nieces & nephew David. )
This probably not quite right.  In 1820 Trumbull Co. OH, Vernon twp is
Michael Rutledge and Edmund.  I do not believe that this Michael is her son
but is Michael Rutledge who married Eleanor Deason."

"Children of Michael Rutledge and Elizabeth are:"
Michael b. abt 1777
Sarah b. about 1788
Penelope b. 08 Oct 1792
Ruth b. abt 1795
Casiah b. abt 1796
Nancy Anna b. abt 1796

She also states in that msg, that Michael 1777 and Mary had a daughter
Elizabeth who married Carmi Barnes.

*early 1800's...

Hope this is helpful to you....................
Carol

Good Morning Donna...

He is listed on the 1820 census in Vernon Township,Trumball Co., Ohio.
Just down the page is Michael Rutledge & Elizabeth Rutledge also, so
feel that has to be him. He has 3 males between 16 & 26, 1 male 45 & up
& 1 female 45 & up.
I printed the page off the census, and I can try scanning it in, but I'm
not sure how it will scan. I can mail you a copy if you would like.

Jim,
I have a John Ellett Rutledge b. 19 July 1796 that married Altha Mathew
on 22 Feb 1827 at Muskingum Co., Ohio. He was the son of  my William
Rutledge (abt 1760-1816) & Margaret (possibly Ellett or Elliott)  Two of
John's brothers also married Mathew sisters.  Abraham Rutledge m.
Narcissus Mathew and Luther Rutledge m. Ruth Mathews

I have Altha b. 08 October 1813 VA d. 26 May 1886 Mercer Co. Ohio.

Maybe we are really going to end up in the same line yet Jim.

Hi all,

Just re-reading old notes and came across an interesting one from a cousin
of our line, "My Great Grandmother Sarah Beckler Rutledge was born in Athens
County, Ohio and the Beckler Family ran the Company Store for the Coal Mine
there.  Her Grandfather, Peter Beckler (1776 - 1869) fought Napoleon and was
from Alsace Lorraine.  He had many children, one being John Hanson Beckler
(4 Jan 1826 in Carbondale, Athens, Ohio - 20 November 1900 in Athens
County). He had a son, William D. Beckler (1860 - 1940 all of Carbondale,
Athens, Ohio).

I found William D. Beckler and his wife Alpha living with their daughter
Hazel McCafferty (b. 1898) in both the 1920 and 1930 Census in Athens
County, Ohio.  Hazel's husband was Clarence McCafferty born 3 May 1894 and
died February 1964, all of Ohio.  They had three sons that show on the
Census: Cecil born about 1915 in Ohio, Clarence E. "Jack" Jr. born about
1917 and Richard born about 1922.

As I searched more, I found that Alpha Beckler's maiden name was Alforetta
Cunningham.  Her Father was James Calhoun Cunningham (born: Dec 1835) and
her Mother was none other than Sarah Minerva Stephenson born in 1834 and
died 3 July 1890.  This Sarah Minerva is of course the older sister of our
Martha Letitia Stephenson Rutledge (24 April 1842 - 20 October 1919), wife
of Thomas Wilson Rutledge (17 Jan 1839 - 24 April 1918) (NOTE:  Martha and
Thomas Wilson Rutledge are my direct line).  Athens County is small and it
seems all families are inter-connected!

Anyone recognize any of these names?

Interesting that you have a Rutledge/Nixon connection.   My grandfather
William C. Rutledge married Martha A Nixon  in 1908 in OK.     It appears
that the Rutledge Clans and the Nixon Clans have been living near each
other, migrating together and intermarrying since the 1400's.

I don't have any information on your Elizabeth & Hugh Rutledge though.
Wish I did. I would love to be able to help you out, but I got Nada.

 I've attached a tree that I've put
together (original by Harry E RUTLEDGE, 1966, of California). He was
unsure of the connection with Elizabeth RUTLEDGE to BURKEand said:

"Elizabeth, a shadowy figure in the family. This compiler has been unable
(to) bring up any facts on her. Minnie Chalmers thought that Elizabeth had
died shortly after her marriage and Burke remarried and left Markdale."

Harry had Henry's name as John Burke. A granddaughter of Henry
called him Henry John so he is may be the same person as John Burke. If
so,
then I have a connection to this branch of RUTLEDGE's. It appears that the
granddaughter had some info incorrect but if they are my Henry
and Elizabeth then it was Henry's first Wife (a Miss MILLS) who died
shortly after the birth of their first child; Henry then remarried about
1834 to Elizabeth. There is no record that Henry or Elizabeth ever got
to Markdale. She likely stayed in Carleton County, as her brother
Thomas did, and she married Henry Burke.

From Harry's E RUTLEDGE's chart, below, are the children of Hugh
RUTLEDGE, son of Edward and Elizabeth RUTLEDGE.
All the children were born in Kinawley, Fermanagh, Ulster,
Northern Ireland. Most of the children, except Alice, immigrated to
 Carleton
County, ON, CAN about 1831 with a second group coming between 1836 - 1839.
The combined families settled near North Gower, in Carleton Co, ON. In
1835
most of them moved to near Delta, Leeds Co, ON. In the fall of 1850 some
of
them moved to Markham, Grey Co, ON and one went to Thamesville, Kent Co,
ON. Eventually a few dispersed to Kansas, California, Maryland.

I'm particularly interested in Elizabeth RUTLEDGE, my gr gr grandmother,
2nd wife of Henry BURKE. She was born about 1814 and died Oct 1853 at
Carleton Co, ON. She and my Henry had about 10 children.

I've taken this info except for Elizabeth, above, from a tree prepared by
Harry Edward RUTLEDGE in Jul 1966. He was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1885
and lived at San Rafael, CA. Does anyone recognize names on this tree and
can you provide me with names and address of any descendants who would
care
 to correspond with me?

 Thanks for your help,

 Ray, in Nanaimo, BC

thanks at least know where to put her now

Good morning,

This is another longshot.  Saw your post at IGW and IRELAND lists.  I
have Rutledges, but have not had much luck researching that line, or
finding living cousins.  Maybe you could help ???

This is my RUTLEDGE line in a nutshell . . .

*** James Mayes RUTLEDGE, born 20 Aug 1800, GA, married Sarah Brim
Richardson SMITH, on 2 Sep 1820.  She was born 20 Dec 1795, SC
*** Their daughter, my line, Eliza (Elizabeth) Ann RUTLEDGE, born 7 Mar
1839, IL (or OH ?), died 17 Oct 1920, (ID ?).  I have a picture of her,
the only picture of my RUTLEDGEs.  Would like to find more pictures of
RUTLEDGEs.  She married 28 Jun 1857, Josiah Thomas ELLIOTT (another
deadend line).
*** Their daughter, my line, Sarah Belle ELLIOTT . . . .

That is all that I have for my RUTLEDGEs, except we know that two of our
RUTLEDGE ancestors signed the Declaration of Independance, and the
United States Constitution, I believe James and Edward RUTLEDGE ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

This is my family line on Michael Rutledge and Elinor Deason
I have letter from John Deason Rutledge grandson telling of Michael Rutledge
who had two marriages and two sets of children. Michael Rutledge 1740 2nd marriage was to an Elizabeth,  Michael died in Maryland, and aged Elizabeth
came with her son Corp. Michael to Trumbull County Ohio. The son Corp. Michael
Rutledge also had two marriages 1st to a Mary Burns, 2nd to  Lydia Ackley Emmons wife of Jeremiah Emmons.
The father Michael Rutledge 1740 married to Elizabeth had son Corp. Michael Rutledge born 1777
along with seven daughters, the 7 daughters are listed in attachment.

My line is from Micheal and Elinor Deason who had daughter Clara Rutledge,
EdmoundRutledge,  John Deason Rutledge born 1773 , and William Rutledge.
Elinor Deason Rutledge died in Maryland,  supposedly Michael died there too,
in the aritcle says second wife  Elizabeth walked to Ohio with son Michael and
his seven sisters about 1800. The article refers to Elizabeth as son Michaels, widowed mother.
Son Corp. Michael Rutledge married Lydia Ackley Emmons in 1808 Trumbull County Ohio. Jeremiah Emmons died in 1790 in Conn. It is thought that when Lydia and
Michael married they were older people and did not have many children and have
only found one listed for them.
Corp. Michael died in 1867 Vernon twp Trumbull County Ohio. He was the only Michael in
Trumbull county. He was in War of 1812 and drew a pension.
The Trumbull Historical Society says that the DAR records and cemetery records
are incorrect about his burial. The correct information is he is buried in Center
cemetery Trumbull County Ohio. DAR of Trumbull has record someplace other than where
he is buried which was a typo in compiling information.
The half brother of Michael Rutledge born 1777 was Edmound and he was in
Trumbull county along with Michael. I have not found anything on Edmound yet
except he was the father of Emmons Rutledge who died in Cambden South Carolina.
I think in 1838.
See attachement for other information that may help someone

See GEDCOM by Mike Rutledge in the GEDCOM section.

Donna,
I'm not for sure what the B. stands for, but I suspicion that it stands for BURNS. As you noticed his mother's name was BURNS. I haven't been able to find out anything about the Burns family. Polly died sometime after her 3 children were born. According to an obituary for Elizabeth RUTLEDGE DELIN in the Trumball Co., OH paper in about 1887, Michael was remarried to Lydia Ackley. Rachel thought that there were 2 different Michaels who lived in Trumball county at the same time about 2 years difference in age. Her second book says just that, but she was using census' to make that assumption. We know there are many mistakes in those census reports. He appeared twice in the same census living with 2 different people, but I know that can happen. I had a gt.grandfather who was widowed and not well. (a civil war veteran) Anyway, he was living with one relative in June and another in August. His name was Uriah Gress, so the chance of 2 men in the same census with that name was sm!
all. Sorry for rattling on about this, but my brick wall is making the connection from John to his father (whether it's Michael or not). I don't have a Levi in any of my research. Thanks.  Mary in Michigan

Hi Sandy,

Noticed you were researching in Ohio.  By any chance, do you have any
Rutledge's in Amesville, Athens Co, OH; Gratiot, Muskingum Co., OH; Mt.
Sterling, Muskingum Co., OH; Westland Township, Guernsey Co., OH; Pleasant
Plains, Warren Co., OH or surrounding areas?  The time line would be from
somewhere around 1827 - 1900's.   Thanks for checking.

While I an thinking about it, I am also asking all the others on the list,
too.  Seems to be many new names, welcome to our list.

Hi,

I found some interesting names submitted at this URL:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~donkelly/rutstates/illinois.htm  The names I
am interested in are those of Rebecca RUTLEDGE and Lester SARVER, and their
children Etta and Netta.

In my family tree there is a John SARVER b. 1838, OH, d. 1918, IL and
Sussanah Rebecca RUTLEDGE b. 1845, IL, d. 1913 they were married in 1861 in
McLean Co., IL and had several children two of them were twins named Nettie
and Etta both b. 1886, IL, d. 1971, TX.  I am a descendant of their older
brother, James David SARVER 1862-1899.

I do not know what John SARVER's middle name was, and it seems a coincidence
these two families share these common names.

Upon attempting to e-mail the person who submitted the information in
question there was a failure to deliver it due to a non existant address.  I
was wondering if there were anyone else who had any information on this
particular Rebecca RUTLEDGE and Lester SARVER.

Ron, I think that I've put this on before, but John's son Hiram was born in
Ohio (exact site unknown as yet). Hiram was a shingle maker and migrated
wherever. His children were born in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Iowa. Wm
Henry Harrison Rutledge was born in Rolling Prairie, Indiana just south of
Berrien Co., MI. I don't know when he moved to Michigan. Wm. H.H.R. was born
4 Feb 1855 and died 29 June 1941, buried in Stephensville in Berrien Co, MI.
I think that John B. Rutledge was the son of Michael Rutledge and Mary Polly
Burns, but have not been able to prove it. I think that because Michael had
a brother James Hiram and the family has a Hiram as a brother (or son) of
John B. Rutledge.  Mary in Michigan

Hey gang! If you live near a library that has genealogy research
material
and computers, check to see if they subscribe to Ancestry. Our state
library
which has a fairly large genealogical section (whole 2nd floor), Michigan
to
be exact, subscribes. You can access it for research there. Unfortunately,
I
can't access it from my computer yet. They're working on it and some of
the

Message Board Post:

Dorothy,
Am thrilled to hear from you.  Yes, my mother's nickname was "Tiny" since, high school. I remember Aunt Katherine (Pearce) Mason as being second wife of Walter T Mason (first wife Nina Morgan), and Walter being sister to my grandmother Mary Laura Routledge (Mason), and Alfred and Elmer who both died as infants.  Mary Jane Johns was first married to Edward L Cottrell and were divorced 28 Mar 1885.  Mary Jane then married Henry T Mason on 14 April 1885 in Cleveland, OH (I still can't find out what the "T" stands for in his name or in Walter's name) and of course was mother to Walter T and Mary Laura. I never knew she was known as "Mamie".  Uncle Bill Routledge died 11 Jan 1997.  Uncle Walter lives in CT with wife Charlotte.  He is the last Routledge alive and he and Aunt Char are both ill.  We visited them a few years ago and it was wonderful.  He told me a lot of his memories of my mother, Marie (Tiny). She died 25 Nov 1995.  I did run into the Sheridan name (Anna Sheridan wh!
o married Harry C. Cottrell, oldest son of Edward Cottrell and Mary Jane Johns).  I am trying to discover as much as I can about Mary Jane and her descendants with both husbands but am especially interested in my line from the second marriage to Walter T Mason. From what I know it seems the Cottrells and Masons stayed in contact with each other even though from 2 different marriages.
I have not come across your name.  Who were your parents?  Were/are you married?  Do/did you have siblings?  I am 54 years old and have not been able to find anyone left of my ancestors/families and am just delighted to hear from you. Thank you for posting and hope to hear from you again.

  Col. W.T. Ruledge, 1827 Ohio
Author: Trevor Thomas  Date: 7 Jan 2001 12:00 PM GMT
  Surnames: Rutledge, Redman, Shipps, Sigler
  Classification: Query

While digging through some old family papers, I came across this letter. It
was written somewhere around 1910. Looking for any of the decendants of the
people mentioned in the letter...especially the Rutledge line.
If you can help please E-mail me directly.
Sincerely, Trevor Thomas (thomas@lanset.com)

"Col. W.T. Rutledge was born in Muskingum Co., in the old Asbury
settlement, a short distance south of Gratlot, in 1827. He was 82 years at
the time of his death, his father died when he was but six years old. He was
one of a family of six children, of whom two sisters are still living, Mrs.
Susan REDMAN, and Mrs. Elizabeth Shipps, who reside in Nebraska.
Upon arriving at the age of manhood, Col. Rutledge took up teaching
as his chosen occupation, and in which he successfully continued for a
period of 26 years. Many of the older residents of Licking and Muskingum
counties attribute their learning to his instruction. When 26 years old he
took as his life partner, Miss Rebecca Sigler, a most estimable woman, who
was a daughter of Samuel B. Sigler, whose home at that time was a few miles
south of Newark. Soon after marrying he settled on the quarter section on
which he died, and where he always lived. Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge were the
parents of five children, the eldest having passed away in 1884. The
surviving children are Thomas V. and James W. of Newark, Dr. E.S. Rutledge,
whose home is in Johnstown and Miss Margaret, who is still at the old home.
The widow still survives at the age of 77 years.
In his early married live, when not engaged in teaching, he dealt
extensively in sheep and cattle, having handled as many as three thousand
head of sheep in one season. In recent years he gave his attention more to
farming. He served as justice of the peace for nine years.
The Rutledge family has quite a history, which dates back for many,
many years, and had it's beginning in Scotland. At an early date the
Rutledges moved to the north of Ireland, where they became very active in
various ways in public life, and were also large landowners. During the
political trouble of that early day their activity became so pronounced that
three of the brothers were forced to leave the country. Their property was
confiscated by the crown, and little of what became of it is not known. All
this, of course, occurred prior to the Revolutionary war. The three
brothers,
Edward, John and Michael, after enduring countless hardships, succeeded in
getting on board an outgoing vessel bound for the United States, and
eventually landed in Baltimore. During the first night the vessel was
anchored off Baltimore the brothers, fearing trouble, swam to shore and
safely landed below the public dock. John and Edward made their way from
Baltimore to South Carolina while Michael remained in Maryland. John and
Edward became famous as orators and their devotion to the cause of the
struggling Colonies, and both are frequently referred to in early histories
of the country. John was the great-great-grandfather of Colonel W. T.
Rutledge; Edward was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence,
and John was a signer of the Constitution of the United States, and was also
appointed United States Judge, serving but a short time. Col. Rutledge's
grandparents settled in Muskingum county when it was nothing but a forest.
When Col. Rutledge moved to his home in Franklin township, Licking county,
in 1853, there was but little cleared land and with his own hands he cleared
almost an entire quarter section of land. He was possessed of a co--active
temperament, yet kind hearted to a fault. Charity was one of his aims of
life, and if he could assist one in distress he always did so. He was a
strong man physically and up to his sickness there had never been a time
that he was not able to attend to the business pertaining to the successful
management of his farm."

grandson of William and Mary Rutledge (both Rutledges - cousins), and
gr. grandson of John Cotrell Rutledge.

Hi Jack,

For years I have tried and tried to find a link between our families.  We
were always told all the Tippicanoe Co., Rutledges are related.  Not to
worry, I have not given up.  Having you for kinfolk would be an honor.  Sure
would like to know where and what year your Rutledges were in Ohio.  Perhaps
our link is in Ohio and not in Indiana, who knows.

Still searching for the children of George Washington Rutledge (b. May 11,
1834, in Westland Township, Guernsey Co., OH d. June 12, 1880, in Amesville,
Athens Co., OH m. Mary M. Dean on November 9, 1865, in Clarksburgh, Ross
Co., OH b. about 1836 in Massachusetts  d. December 13, 1922). Their
children are: Frank (b. May 6, 1868, in Dover Township, Athens Co., OH) and
Harley (b. February 3, 1875, in Dover Township, Athens Co., OH (Xenia
Library), Their first child Luie died in infancy.  I am sure one or both
married and had children.

Anyone have a Harley or a Frank Rutledge?  They were born in Ohio, but could
be anywhere.

Also searching for Luella (Ellie) Rutledge (twin sister of Luanna) b.
January 10, 1866, in OH d. June 22, 1918, in Chauncey, Athens Co., OH m.
John A. Fulton on July 27, 1884 in Athens Co., OH (Said to have once lived
in Gutherie Center, IA).  Have no record of children for this family at all.

Once again, thank you for responding.  Any input is always appreciated.

Tina

Hi Jerry,

Hi Don,
Good News! My brick wall has been updated: RE: Thomas Rutledge b. abt 1842-1847 Ohio. Father unknown. Mother unknown. Siblings unknown. Brickwall ancestor of Tina Sanders

We finally learned all the information regarding the Thomas above, including his siblings. My new brick wall is the parents of Thomas Armstrong Rutledge, Thomas' father's family.

Thomas Armstrong Rutledge b. March 25, 1802, possibly born in Scotland or Ireland d. February 3, 1853 Amesville, Athens, OH m. to Jane Vandermarke b. August 20, 1808 in Lower Smithfield, Northampton, Pennsylvania d. April 18, 1839 in Ames Township, Athens, OH. m. on October 18, 1827 in Guernsey County, OH. They had six Children and he possibly remarried Anna Blackwell after Jane passed away.

We do know that at one time he and James owned land together. James is thought to have been his father, uncle or his brother.

Any input is welcome. Please answer to verify receipt. Thank you. Tina Sanders

Do you have any confirmation for me? Just wondering

County touches Perry County which is where my Thomas Armstrong Rutledge was
born in 1802.  Any other Coopers marry Rutledges around that time?  If so,

Bazell Cooper was the son of Hannah Cooper, do not know Hannah's maiden name nor the name of her husband's name.  Some say that Bazell/Basil Cooper took the name of his step father, Hays.  It had to be after 1826 as his marriage record lists "Cooper" and a land transaction has "Cooper" in Nov. 1826.

His wife, "Belinda" waves her dower right.  One source says that Belinda died in

Emmons Rutledge, s/o Michael and Lydia has been one of my "brick walls". There have so many different stories about him. Linda Y Butler, archives Assistant to DepauW University has been so kind and sent me copies of Emmons Rutledge's obituaries from the Methodist Church Conference. Emmons was apparently a well thought of minister.

The article gave his birth date as 2/Nov/1805 West Salem Twp, Mercer Co., PA. This was new information. It did not give parents or wives or children. My thanks go to Linda for her help. Rachel Demaree Clemons RDCLEMONS@aol.com

I'm going through my binders, trying to put all my ducks in a row with each surname. I have finally come to the the Rutledges. I am still bothered by the connection of Michael Rutledge and Elinor Deason as the parents of Wm. C. First of all, Dale Rutledge, has that John is the father of William. Second of all, even if the birthdate of Elinor

Deason is assumed, her marriage date puts her born in 1749, IF she married at 16. Then she would have to be 45 when she had William. More likely she was about 19, and therefore would have been 47. Another wrench in this is that William would have been born a full 20 years after her last kid, Michael. Besides all that, in the slew of Wm. C. Rutledge descendants there is not a one named Michael or Elinor. Anyway, I'm thinking that John is the father of Wm. C. because that's what Dale has and what my grandma had. She was his great granddaughter. I did find in "Early Ohio Settlers" that a Wm. bought land in May 20, 1831 along with a George Rutledge. This could be my Wm. since he was settled there by then. But I don't know who the George is. An Archer Rutledge bough land connected to theirs. If anyone knows about this. Please let me know. There are also listed James, John D., John E., Peter, Robert, Thomas, and another Wm. who bought land in 1811 if anyone wants to know about them. Diana
