The Janneys, Bucks county and elsewhere, are descended from Thomas
Janney, and Elizabeth his wife, Cheshire, England, where he was born,
1633, and died 12 mo., 17, 1677. His son Thomas joined the Society of
Friends shortly after it was organized, and was frequently punished for
attending meeting. He became a minister about 1654. In 9th mo., 24, 1660,
Thomas Janney was married to Margery Heath, of Horton, at the home of
James Harrison, his brother-in-law. They came to Pennsylvania in the
Endeavor, with four children, landing at Philadelphia 7 mo., 29, 1683.
Jacob Thomas, Abel and Joseph settled in Lower Makefield on the river
below Yardley. He located a five hundred acre patent here, and another of
one thousand acres near the Newtown line. He was a member of the
Provincial Council and returning to England, 1695, died there, 1696, at
the age of sixty-one. He has numerous descendants in this county. Stephen
T. Janney, who died in Newtown township, November 12, 1898, at the age of
eighty-one, was the son of Jacob and Francenia Janney, and the fifth in
descent from the immigrant. His father had ten children and there was no
death among them for the period of fifty years. In 1842 Stephen T. Janney
married Harriet P. Johnson, daughter of William H. and Mary (Paxson)
Johnson, and is survived by five children. This branch of the family made
their home in Newtown township, and the homestead farm is still in their
possession.

I believe the Joseph Rutledge who married Mary Hearn is a descendant of
"Hanging Rock John" of Camden, SC (and later Fairfield and Kershaw).

Joseph's father was John Rutledge, who is reportedly buried at Haynes
Creek, Gwinnett County, GA.

John was the son of Reason Rutledge, who was the son of "Hanging Rock
John".

Joseph and Mary (Hearn) Rutledge had a son, John, who died in 1852 and
is also buried at Haynes Creek, Gwinnett County.

John T. Cupit surmised in his book that "Hanging Rock John" was the son
of John and Margaret (Dalton) Rutledge, and the grandson of William
Rutledge, of Bucks County, PA. If true, this line went from PA to VA to
SC, and eventually, elsewhere.

Hi - My name is George Rutledge.
I live near Watkins Glen, NY.
What year was your John Rutledge born.
I have been dong research on a (John Rutledge) but have found little on
him.
My john was born on Nov 25, 1839 in Ireland.
Was in the local census (Schuyler Co,NY) in 1850, then died on April
11th,1902.
Does this sound like a match to you?

RUTLEDGE FAMILY, which held its first annual reunion at Social Hall, Pennsylvania, September 1, 1904, traces its descent through a number of Generations to an old and honored family of Ireland, and has a most interesting history. Its members combine in a great degree the natural wit of the natives of Ireland with the energy and enterprise which characterize those born and reared in this country, and have borne their full share in the development of the various industries of their adopted country. They are widely scattered throughout the United States, and history tells us of Edward Rutledge, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence; and of the Rutledge who was governor of South Carolina in the early days of the United States of America.

George Rutledge was born in Enniskillen, county Fermanagh, Ireland, May 1, 1790. He emigrated to America in 1817 and located in the city of Philadelphia. They lived in that city four years and then removed to Murrysville, Pennsylvania, where they resided until 1829, when they again moved, this time to the General Doty farm, on the Pittsburg pike. He and his wife conducted a boarding house at this time, during the building of the pike. This was in the days before canals or railroads had penetrated to western Pennsylvania, and the stage coach was the only means of transportation. From the General Doty farm they removed to Social Hall, from thence to the Lock on the canal, and then to Steubenville,

Ohio. After eighteen months in this latter place they returned to Pennsylvania, settling in Livermore. There they spent the remainder of their days, the death of George occurring May 5, 1866. He married, at Enniskillen, Ireland, March 18, 1812, Elizabeth Shaw, who was an able helpmate to her husband. It is related of her that when she and her husband conducted the boarding house on the Pittsburg pike, she would rise early on the morning of one day, walk to Pittsburg, a considerable distance, attend to all the necessary purchases and return on the following day. She died December 7, 1872. George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge had children: Jane, James, Elizabeth, John, William, Irvin; and George.

Jane Rutledge, eldest child of George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge, was born at Lisbellow, county Fermanagh, Ireland, February 15, 1813, died 1895. She married William Elliot, and there are four of her descendants living: Eliza J. Barber, in Killee, county Fermanagh, Ireland; Mrs. Mary Prentice, Livermore, Pennsylvania; George Rutledge Elliot, at the Rutledge homestead, Clough Lisbellow, county Fermanagh, Ireland; and Ellen Moffot, county Tyrone, Ireland.

James Rutledge, second child and eldest son of George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge, was born at Lisbellow, county Fermanagh, Ireland, November 1, 1816, died January 21, 1878. He married Hannah Gallagher, and his surviving children are: John, who lives with his wife and two children in Livermore, Pennsylvania; Mary, who married Robert Ewing, and resides in Livermore, Pennsylvania; Harry B., resides with his wife and two children in Livermore, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Lyde Rutledge, of Blairsville, Pennsylvania; and Mrs. George Rutledge, of Livermore, Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Rutledge, who married Richard Freeland, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 28, 1818, died February 25, 1903. Her children are: Myndert Freeland a resident of Livermore, Pennsylvania; Nellie, lives in Livermore; Mrs. Hannah Nofsker, lives in Livermore; Mrs. Lyde Kemer, resides in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Sarah Irvin, deceased, left three children, all in Johnstown.

John Rutledge, fourth child and second son of George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge, was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 16, 1820, died November 25, 1856. He married Keziah McCurdy and had one child: Samuel M., a resident of Illinois.

William Rutledge, third son and fifth child of George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge, was born at Murrysville, Pennsylvania, December 21, 1822, and is living at Woodhull, Illinois. He married Ann McCurdy, and had children: Mrs. Jennie Rutledge Weible; Mrs. Elizabeth Taze; Mrs. Ella Rutledge West; Mrs. Laura Rutledge Payton; Mrs. Georgia Rutledge Freeman; and Mr. William F. Rutledge.

Irvin Rutledge, fourth son and sixth child of George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge, was born at Murrysville, Pennsylvania, February 24, 1826, died December 25, 1894. He married Lucetta Haymaker Colleasure, and had eight children: Margaret, Lucy, Augusta, Frank, Elizabeth, William, Irvin, all deceased; also John C., of whom sketch elsewhere.

George Rutledge, fifth son and seventh and youngest child of George and Elizabeth (Shaw) Rutledge, was born at Social Hall, Pennsylvania, May 20, 1829, and is living in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Shaw was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Shaw, the former a farmer in Ireland, and both dying in 1806. They had children: William. Irvin, John, George, Elizabeth, Jane and Ellen. George Rutledge received what was considered a good common school education in those days, and was then employed on the Pennsylvania canal for twenty-five years, as driver, teamster and captain in charge of a boat. He was then engaged in the mercantile business in Livermore, Pennsylvania, for the next ten years, and then at Johnstown, with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for five years, as timekeeper and paymaster. He held a position with the Cambria Steel Company for ten years as foreman of the tracks, was the first street commissioner of Johnstown, then in the general merchandise business for two years, and is now (1906) and for five years has been in the employ of the National Biscuit Company. He is a man of prominence and influence in his town, and is highly esteemed for his many sterling qualities. He is a member of the Presbyterian church, and a stanch supporter of the Democratic party. He married, June 19, 1856, Henrietta Ferguson, daughter of Samuel and Susan (King) Ferguson, who died April 10, 1884. They had children: Richard, married Millie M. Clelland; Lillian, deceased; Manira; Annie; Albert, married Minnie Kerler; Samuel, deceased; James D., whose sketch follows this; Bell M., married Edward Sanford; Frank; and Campbell, whose sketch follows this.

Ali,

"Neal" would be the first name, not the last name. So the last name would be
COOK. I know that my William RUTLEDGE associated with COOKS/RUDDELLS/EZELLS
and that he was born about 1690 in DE/MD. Half-siblings listed in his will
were KNIGHTS and that he was at one time married to one of the COOK daughters.
I doubt he had any children but resided in NC.

I'm not sure about this William, but the Ezells of Surry Co NC are
mine....the only William I have
in the proper time frame? (there were no dates mentioned) is William Rutledge
b. abt 1795 NC, d.
1851 Lawrence Co AR, m. Margaret Buchanan b. 30 Nov 1795 Lincoln Co NC.
These are my gggg
grandparents. Their grandson, Jefferson F. Rutledge m. Frances "Nancy"
Catherine Ezell. I don't
think I have any Neals in my database at all so the William you found
probably is not. Its
curious though that he was also connected to the Ezells.

Nottingham, PA. Her maiden name was Jones (wife of Neal Cook) but was
originally Jonasson, daughter of Mounce Jones (Mons Jonasson) and Ingaborg
Lycon.

Hope this is a lucky week and someone can help me on this Abraham Rutledge that has been such a mystery for me. I believe that he was living in Tidioute, Warren Co., PA in 1861 according to his brother Benjamin but I have not found him in the 1860 census. I have traced him in the 1870 & 1880 census and then I loose him again. Does anyone have more information on him or his family? Who was his wife?

I just came across a George P. Rutledge married to a Carrie W. McCurdy.
George was b. 1869 in VAa, and Carrie was b. 1874 in Va. They lived in
Philadelphia . They had 3 daughters, Francis C. b 2/1898 VA, Pauline b
8/1899 in Philadelphia & Carol b 1906 in Philadelphia.

Does anyone claim this George? They were in the 1900 & 1910 Philadelphia
Census. I found them in the 1920 Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio census.

My great grandfather was a George Rutledge married to Ann McCurdy. I
just found that this Carrie W. McCurdy is in my McCurdy line. I was
hoping to find out that George P. was relation too, but so far I can't
piece anything together. Jan

I know I can't attach to the list, but I'm going to try scanning this
info in, and then I could send the page privately to anyone who is
interested. Unfortunately, I don't have North Carolina, but a new
Mormon library is opening about 30 miles from me, so I might be able to
visit that when it opens in March. I sure wish I had been smarter back
then, and I would have written down what this is a list for. Since it
has a source with a batch and serial #, it must be a master record for
something. I just know that I got it when I went to Rockford to the
Mormon library for the first time. I was being overwhelmed with their
help, and I wasn't even sure what I was doing. I told them I was looking
for Rutledge's in Ireland, Pa & IL and they just kept bringing me stuff.
I remember calling my mom who lived about 10 blocks away to bring me my
purse as I had been out walking & only stopped in there on a whim, and
didn't have a lot of cash on me that day. They had so much stuff, and I
had made so many copies that I needed more money!!! I never got back in
there again, even tho I drove by it every time I went to visit my
parents. Now they are gone and I never get up that way. I would love to
take a day and go back, now that I have a clue what I'm doing!

since I was new at the researching process then, I was taking
everything they could find for me. I guess that's why I ended up with
this paperwork, and never found any connection to my Rutledge line.
Anyway, it's several pages long, and it's from PA, TN, IL & Ireland.
It lists Adult christenings, Births, Christening, Death or Burial,
Birth or Chirstening of first known Child, Marriage, Census, Will, or
Miscellaneous.

There's way too many for me to just post, but if you have someone
from PA, TN, IL or Ireland between 1701 & 1879, email me and I'd be
glad to look it up for you. Unfortunately, I don't have clue as to
what this index goes to. There is a source, batch # & serial sheet,
but I haven't the foggiest what it's for. No one told me back then to
copy title pages, or to document exactly where I got my info, so I
don't have that info. There is a lot of dates, etc on these papers,
so maybe it will help someone out..

According to Rachel Clemons' book, "My Rutledge Family...Book II...",
Michael b. 1777, is the son of Michael Rutledge b. about 1754 Baltimore Co,
MD and died bef 1820 and Elizabeth ________________ .

He is also, according to her book, a brother to my 3 great grandmother, Ruth
b. about 1796/5. In a msg I have from Rachel dated June 11, 1999, she
states: "Family tradition has it that Elizabeth Rutledge, a widow, moved to
PA from MD*, (PA was really Trumbull Co., OH, which is on the PA border.)
she brought seven dau's and Michael as well as 2 nieces & nephew David. )
This probably not quite right. In 1820 Trumbull Co. OH, Vernon twp is
Michael Rutledge and Edmund. I do not believe that this Michael is her son
but is Michael Rutledge who married Eleanor Deason."

Good Morning to a Quiet List.....

For those interested in the Rutledge line that descends from Isaac Rutledge of Cumberland County, PA., I'll pass along a copy of the obit for Lola (Rutledge) Phillips who died recently in AR. She descends from the Rutledges of Clark and Cumberland Co's, KY. She was the daughter of James Monroe and Tamer (Wheeler) Rutledge of AR., the grand-daughter of Calvin Smith and Louisa (Richards) Rutledge of AR., and a great granddaughter of John Jefferson Rutledge of Boone County, AR.

For me, this obit had a few new items of interest, plus a lead to kin still living in Clarksville, AR. Sure wish I had known of Lola earlier.... at 98 I'll bet she had some interesting family tales to relate of our AR kin. Maybe her children will be of help....

Hello All...

Does anyone have experience or advice on how to locate a specific DAR linage
report? I've seen various DAR books in libraries, but I can't seem to find
any register or index which indicate where specific reports may be housed.

I have been corresponding with a desendant of the Gay family line. He has
given me a lead re: the line of John Rutledge, Jr. of N.C., son of John Rutledge
who migrated to NC from Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA. John Rutledge Jr was
married to Ann, last name unknown to me. They had several children: Ann,
Abel, Prudence, Margaret, Susannah and Isaac.

I have located a will for Abel which mentions "my brother-in-law William
Gay." William Gay is also the estate executor. The Gay family information
states that Abel's sister, Ann, married William Gay, on Aug. 26, 1808, but the
source information is lacking. I believe some source information may be available
in a DAR linage report Volume 137 page 106... a report listing the linage of
a James Gay.

If anyone knows where I can find this report, I would greatly appreciate
hearing from you. Thanks...

John Rutledge in really sunny Oregon

Hi Jan....

Been doing some more on the Oregon Rutledge line of George and Sara... I've
attached a report of info I've dug up so far.... Could you look thru it and
see if any names or places jump out at you...

What's of interest to me right now is finding a census entry for George
Rutledge in Humbolt Co, CA in 1880. Note that George indicates his parents were
both born in PA.... so.. maybe we're onto the right line afterall... I know
that's a thin connection, esp. since George later lists other places of birth for
his parents.. but... the is very early on.. maybe he hadn't gotten it all
mixed up yet..;)

Also, his obit gives a possible clue to their MI roots... it mentions a
sister in Richland, MI., so we need to follow up on that point.

Last.. I haven't gotten the info entered yet, but I've located several of the
Kay family line living very near to George and Sara in Humbolt Co, CA. This
caught my eye since their son Arthur's death notice in the CA index states
his mother's maiden name was Kay.

There are two families.. living next door to each other...
William Kay, 28, wife Jane, two children. Wm is born in MI, father Ohio,
mother Ohio.

Daniel F. Kay, 25 MI OH OH. LIving with him is his mother, Mary A. Kay,
45, OH VA OH. ; his brother, Frederick M., 9, CA OH OH.; and his
grandmother, Esther Snider, 82, OH KY OH.

Its my guess this is the Daniel F. Kay who will later marry Estella Rutledge,
dau of George and Sara.

So.. this adds credence to Sara's maiden name mentioned in Arthur's death
index.

Anyway... it seems these names, places of birth, dates, etc. are setting a
pattern that may fit for your line coming out of PA.... Let me know what you
think...

christopher ormsby 1807, jane 1808, richard 1810, thomas ormsby 1811,
christopher 1815, ormsby 1816. most of these people were born in ireland.

I am attempting to learn more about William Rutledge, d. abt 1830, Carlisle,
Cumberland Co., PA m. Margaret Waugh in June 1808, (First Presbyterian
Church records). Issue: To date, I have been able to only identify two by
name: William, b. June, 4, 1814 and James, b. May 27, 1816. (Registry of
Baptism; Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, Mechanicsville, Cumberland
County, PA.) These children were baptised on Nov. 15, 1816, and Margaret
Rutledge is listed as parent.

My attempts to find add'l info about Margaret (Waugh) Rutledge by examining
Waugh family records, have been unsucessful to date. Any ideas you may have
to check Waugh family data would be appreciated.

I'm unable to tell from your post where the individuals listed in the death
notices lived. Is the Watkins Express a newspaper? If so, do you know which
state it is located?

he married my gr,grandmother ANNIE in 1898, he is my step-grandfather so
not much has been done with his genealogy.
but we have a pic of him in full Native regalia!!! it's pretty neat!! as

I just received this new information, and it shows that I have Rutledge
kin buried in Grandview Cem. in Johnstown also. I was wondering how sure
you were on the birthdate of your George Rutledge b 1833? The reason I'm
asking is that I have several George Rutledge's born around that time,
but I don's have any spouses for them. This is what I have for my
branch, and maybe you can see where it ties into your line. I hope this

George died 5 May 1868, had 1 brother and 2 sisters, none of them came to the US, and none of them ever married.

Co., MD., 11th ward, pg 437 is Abraham Rutledge, age 45 up with 1 m to 10 and 1 m 10-16, 1 f 10-16 , 1 f 26-45 and 1 f 45 up (The female 26-45 is probably dau in law.) 1830 11th ward pg 414 is Margaret Rutledge, age 50-60, so it would appear that both Margaret and Abraham were past 45 when they married. (no Abraham in 1810) 1840 Benjamin Rutledge, age 30-40 has a female age who is probably Margaret 1840 Census does not have a Margaret or Abraham, however there is a Benjamin Rutledge who lives in 2nd ward who has a female, age 60-70. CENSUS: 1783 Tax List gives 3 sons Balt. Co., MD for Abraham, son of Wm. OTHER:Believe this could be the son of Abraham Rutledge, son of William & Margaret. NO PROOF! However the 1820 census sort of bears this out. WILL NEED TO FOLLOW UP! OTHER:Abraham must have died prior to 1830 as only Margaret is listed. In the 1820 census they have 1 m 10-16, 1 m up to 10, and 1 f 10-16, 1 26-45, besides Abraham and Margaret. In the 1840 Census the 2nd ward, Balt. City is a Bennamin Rutledge with 1 m 5-10, 2m 10-15, 1 m 15-20, 1 m 30-40, 1 f 5-10, 1 f 30-40 and 1 f 60-70 ( this could be Margaret. ) CENSUS:1800, Marsh Barren Hudred, Wash. Co., MD. Hi....I'm new to the list. Has anyone researched the Routledge family from Northumberland, England?

George Routledge b. 1796 m. 1822 St. Alban's Church, Earsdon, NBL, England, to Ruth Gardner.
Children: Jane 1826, Seghill Colliery, NBL, Eng, m. James Jopling 1849, d. 1869, PA; Sarah b. 1829 Eng; George b. 1829 Eng; John b. 1831 Eng; Ruth b. 1835; Joseph.

Jane Routledge came to US with her husband in 1849 and settled in Mill Creek, Schuylkill Co. PA...and several years later moved to Inkerman, Luzerne Co. PA. Believe George and Ruth also moved to PA Their dau Ruth m. Henry Jopling 1855. Ruth and infant child died before her first wedding anniversery.

This was a family of coal miners who worked coal towns in Eng before working in coal towns in PA.

Hi Don, I found a couple of interesting tidbits for your Rutledge collection:

1. Margaret Ruthedge, from Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, left from the port Derry in 1848 on the "Hannah Kerr", bound for Philadelphia, PA.
2. James Rutlidge, also from Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, left from the port of Derry in 1848 on the "Hannah Kerr," also born for Philadelphia, PA

May or may not have been on the same ship at the same time, exact date not given, and list doesn't indicate they were related. My library reference book gives those spellings and usually lists husband and wives and children in a group; these two were separate.

Emmons Rutledge, s/o Michael and Lydia has been one of my "brick walls". There have so many different stories about him. Linda Y Butler, archives Assistant to DepauW University has been so kind and sent me copies of Emmons Rutledge's obituaries from the Methodist Church Conference. Emmons was apparently a well thought of minister. The article gave his birth date as 2/Nov/1805 West Salem Twp, Mercer Co., PA. This was new information. It did not give parents or wives or children. FIRST GENERATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. William Rutledge (1) was born in Jun 1756 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He appeared on the census in 1790 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. (2) He sold 320 acres on the middle fork of Brier Creek on 19 May 1790 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.(3) He owned stock mark: a crop off right ear swallow fork on left on 24 Nov 1807 in Maury County, Tennessee.(4) He appeared on the census in 1820 in Maury County, Tennessee. (5) He appeared on the census in 1830 in Wayne County, Tennessee. (6) He sold A certain negro girl named Cherry aged twenty two years (deed of gift) on 11 Feb 1832 in Wayne County, Tennessee. (7) He bought 27 acres on Rayburn's fork of Indian Creek, Survey Simington & Davis on 29 Dec 1832 in Wayne County, Tennessee. (8) He died about 1835 in Tennessee.

William Rutledge was born June, 1756, in Carlyle, Pennsylvania, the son of Isaac and Mary Rutledge. The first record of him is in Rowan, County, North Carolina, where on August 2, 1775, "William Rutledge, Orphan of Isaac Rutledge, being of lawful age came into Court and chose for his guardian David Caldwell" (Court Records, Rowan County, NC).

William Rutledge then served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, which is outlined in his pension record listed below. toward the end of the War, he settled in Wilkes County, NC, where he married Chloe Johnson, daughter of Jeffery Johnson, in 1782. He is listed on the 1790 Census of Wilkes County, North Carolina.

About 1795, he moved to Williamson County, Tennessee, and then to Maury County after it was formed in 1807. In 1829, he moved to Wayne County, where he died after applying for a pension in 1834, but before 1835, as he is not listed on the pension roll of 1835.

Samuel Shanklin Rayburn was born on 22 Dec 1799 in Wayne County, Tennessee. He appeared on the census in 1830 in Wayne County, Tennessee. (31) He appeared on the census in 1840 in Lafayette County, Mississippi.(32) He died in Aug 1846 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He was buried in Harmontown Cemetery, Lafayette County, Mississippi. (2) He sold 320 acres on the middle fork of Brier Creek on 19 May 1790 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.(3) He owned stock mark: a crop off right ear swallow fork on left on 24 Nov 1807 in Maury County, Tennessee.(4) He appeared on the census in 1820 in Maury County, Tennessee. (5) He appeared on the census in 1830 in Wayne County, Tennessee. (6) He sold A certain negro girl named Cherry aged twenty two years (deed of gift) on 11 Feb 1832 in Wayne County, Tennessee. William Rutledge was born June, 1756, in Carlyle, Pennsylvania, the son of Isaac and Mary Rutledge. The first record of him is in Rowan, County, North Carolina, where on August 2, 1775, "William Rutledge, Orphan of Isaac Rutledge, being of lawful age came into Court and chose for his guardian David Caldwell" (Court Records, Rowan County, NC).

William Rutledge then served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, which is outlined in his pension record listed below. toward the end of the War, he settled in Wilkes County, NC, where he married Chloe Johnson, daughter of Jeffery Johnson, in 1782. He is listed on the 1790 Census of Wilkes County, North Carolina.

About 1795, he moved to Williamson County, Tennessee, and then to Maury County after it was formed in 1807. In 1829, he moved to Wayne County, where he died after applying for a pension in 1834, but before 1835, as he is not listed on the pension roll of 1835.

For some time now it has been supposed that Mary Elizabeth Rutledge was a sister to Michael and the story was that Mary the mother brought them to OH. The story below is a bit different. I sent this once and got a message that bad address. I included it with a whole group and if I read the message right the list did not receive this. For a long time there have been mixed reports on the following families. It was agreed that the family started in MD but then things got mixed up. It now seems that that James went to Mercer Co., PA after the birth of his first child. David was born in Mercer Co., PA and the records said his father was born in PA and his mother in MD. Just recently I received an obituary for Emmons Rutledge and it said Emmons was born in Mercer Co., PA. This conclusion was drawn from studying the 1850 and 1860 census of Trumb. Co., OH. Elizabeth Rutledge, reported to be the mother of Michael Rutledge and 5 daughters did not come to Oh until around 1810. There was a Benjamin Rutledge who married Mary Ann Rowe in Balt. Co., MD. and the tax lists gave a Michael in the same Hundreds who had 2 sons and 5 females. For this reason I am placing Michael Rutledge, b abt 1754, wife Elizabeth, as a son of Benjamin. Michael Rutledge, b 1774, MD would be the son of this Michael. Michael Rutledge and Mary Burns had a dau Elizabeth who married Carmi Barnes. In 1860 Michael Rutledge, age 83, bp MD is living with this couple in Trumb. Co., OH. (The other Michael Rutledge, age 86, is living with James W. I'm not sure about this William, but the Ezells of Surry Co NC are mine....the only William I have
in the proper time frame? (there were no dates mentioned) is William Rutledge b. abt 1795 NC, d.
1851 Lawrence Co AR, m. Margaret Buchanan b. 30 Nov 1795 Lincoln Co NC. These are my gggg
grandparents. Their grandson, Jefferson F. Rutledge m. Frances "Nancy" Catherine Ezell. I don't
think I have any Neals in my database at all so the William you found probably is not. Its
curious though that he was also connected to the Ezells.

William Rutledge who was an executor for Neal Cook and later witnesses for
land transactions between Cornelius Cook, Sr ("Neal") and Jr. was married to one
of Neal's daughters (I believe she may be named Elizabeth). Some documents

originally Jonasson, daughter of Mounce Jones (Mons Jonasson) and Ingaborg Lycon.

I'm not sure who wrote the message. I moved it to my Rutledge file and it's not there. Anyway, I descend from Michael's first son, John B. who was born in 1801. I have their 3 children as follows: John B. Rutledge born 03 Sep 1801 (maybe in Baltimore, maybe in Mercer County, PA before it became Trumball Co. Ohio- his death certificate says he was born in Maryland; James Hiram Rutledge born about 1803 and Elizabeth 15 Apr and not sure which year. John was living in Trumball Co. when he was accidentally shot by a neighbor who was bear hunting and John had a shock of very dark hair. In the waning light I guess he looked like a bear. Well, anyway, he left shortly thereafter and moved to Indiana where he remarried Rachel Smith in 1842. There is some information that he might have been married 3 times. John's son Hiram (maybe named after his brother) was born in Ohio in 1820. Both John B. and Hiram moved to Berrien Co, Michigan and there John B. died in 1874. He's buried in
Lakeside Cemetery, Chickaming Township, Berrien Co. I have a lot of mysteries to solve yet, but hope to before I'm too old to research. Hope this helps. Mary in Michigan.

Edward Rutledge And His Descendants
There were other Rutledge families in Pennsylvania, North and South
Carolina's,
and Tennessee, which have no known connection with the one which this study
is
dealing.
this Edward Rutledge born in or about 1725, appears to have gone from the
North of
Ireland and to have arrived in Pennsylvania between 1735 and 1740. The
evidence
is that he emigrated from Pennsylvania to the Valley of Virginia in the
1740's. As yet we have
no postive knowledge of his parentage, or place, or date of his birth. Nor
do we know if he had brothers and sisters.
He was a planter, industrious, well liked and highly respected by all who
knew him.
in 1750 he married Miss Sarah Armstrong, the daughter of a prominet Augusta
County
Virginig family and Edward died Feb 18, 1787.
Many of his Descendants have cherished the Traditional Story that he was
related to the
children of Dr. John Rutledge of Charleston, South Carolina.
The fact of the names being of similarity between the two families has led
to some confusion, when descendants of this Edward Rutledge have claimed,
through error, the line and services of Dr. John of Charleston S. C.
That a relationship existed between these two families is quite probable, if
one could trace with accuaracy from origin of each family but, certainly, not
a close relationship on these
shores.
Edward and his wife Sarah ahd issue:

2. James Rutledge died between 1794 married July 14, 1778

On May 23 1763 George the Third, Granted to Edward Rutledge, a parcel of land
containing twenty six acres lying and being some nine miles from Staunton,
Virginia
at what has been since called New Hope Church.
In the Deed Index Books of Augusta County Virginia are records of Deeds
covering the real estate transactions of this Edward Rutledge.
They are as follows
1. Nov 22 1753 Edward Rutledge purchased a property Flag Spring, from
William Kerr.
It was part of 250 acres of land pateneted to William Kerr, Sept 5 1749, and
situated on
Middle River. Edward Rutledge occupied Flag Spring as his home for over 33
years. Here his seven children were born and reared and here he died Feb 18
1787.

2. August 17 1784 Edward and Sarah Rutledge deeded to their son, James
Rutledge, a
tract of land known as Black Oak Spring. No record has been found of its
purchase by
Edward Rutledge.

3. Dec 15 1786, a few months before the death of Edward, a period when
testator mush have been very ill, he and his wife deeded thier home, Flag Spring
to George
Rutledge, their youngest son. At that time, he was only 16 years of age and
too young to administer it. Therefore, it was held in trust for him by
executor, David Stephenson, until July 20 1790, when he delivered to George Shortly
after his 21 birthday. Afther the death of
Edward Rutledge, his widow Sarah continued to live in her old home with
their son, George, until she died in her 98 year.

Hi Group, I'm actually trying to reach Talmadge G. Rutledge of our group and
a DNA member. Seems he's left AOL, and I don't know how to contact him any
other way. So, if you are still out there Talmadge, here's what I have to say:
I am the other Gwinnett Co. Rutledge family: Bryant Spencer Rutledge. I was
researching deeds yesterday in Cobb Co. and came across a 3-2-1847 Deed
between Joseph Rutledge and Alexander W. Rutledge, both of Gwinnett Co. Seems
Joseph sold 40 acres, more or less to Alexander W. Rutledge for the sum of $40 in
the 18th district, second section of Cobb Co. Then, 1-4-1848 A. W. Rutledge
of Gwinnett Co. sold that same 40 acres to James Patillo of Cobb Co for
'unknown dollars'. Also, neither Joseph or Alexander could write, they put their
mark. Some of Bryant's family went to Cobb Co. to live, such as me and mine.
Also, there is a Patillo name connection to my family. Just interesting stuff!

Also, for your brickwall, John Rutledge, b: abt. 1750 SC. I have found a
Cupit Bowan WFT that I have downloaded and use for reference sometimes.

There are errors, for sure, but for the most part it pretty much runs as correct. I
also believe this to be an older version. Yet, what I have found here is that
your line runs to John (#1) Routledge b: abt 1680 in Middletown Bucks, Pa. I
have found, somewhere else, that he's the son of William Rutledge b: abt.
1654 Kirkenlin, Cumberland, England. Now this is not my research, just stuff I
have found out there. It maybe some help to you or not. Just thought I would
share.
