Mystery Photos

March 2009

This photo was donated to the Donnellson Genealogy Department by Carol Sheneman from Illinois.  Carol is researching the Huckle Family and found photos and letters mentioning the Donnellson, IA area.   Mr. William Huckle, who is the gentleman in the white shirt standing at the left in the picture, was a veteran newspaper man and printer by trade and worked for the Review Printing Office in Donnellson during the early 1900s.   It is assumed that he appears in this picture of the Lee

County Fair Prize Baby Show because he wrote or printed a story and the

picture for the Review.  We also know that Mr. Huckle’s wife was named Nellie and he left Donnellson due to an illness in 1908 and made his home in Sheldon, Iowa until his death in 1909.

What the Department is looking for is further information on the Huckle Family while they resided in Donnellson since no information could be found in our historical files.   The Department also is interested in acquiring the identification of the mothers and their babies because this was the first prize baby show at the Lee County Fair.  Here are some clues about the picture.  The full caption reads: “ John Haffner, President, T.H. Donnell, Vice President, G.W. Mattern, Treasure, Chris Haffner, Secretary.  Lee County Fair 4, 5, 6, 1907.  The Fair that has always paid its premiums in full, Prize Baby Show, Lee Co.”  (Author note:  No month was given for the fair, just the days and year.)

The photo will be posted in the Genealogy Department, placed on the Donnellson Library Web Site at www.donnellson.lib.ia.us, and sent to the Donnellson Star in an enlarged format for easier viewing and possible identification of mothers and babies.
