Barbara Jane Shinkle, my 2nd great grandmother, was born about 1838 most probably in Madison Co., Indiana. On April 5, 1871, she married Samuel Sharp in Independence Co., Arkansas. Oral family history states that originally she was hired as a nurse by Samuel to care for his daughters after his second wife died. Barbara died shortly after giving birth to their daughter, ca. 1873-1874. I have not located many records regarding Barbara's life and do not know where she is buried. Elijah Shinkle, born May 16, 1811 in Brown Co., Ohio, and Matilda Elizabeth "Malinda" Courtney, born June 1811 in Washington Co., Virginia, were Barbara Jane's parents. They were married about 1830, probably in Rush Co., Indiana or close, though I have been unable to locate any type of marriage record. In March 1837, Elijah held land in Madison Co., Indiana. Prior to that, it appears he was living in or near Rush Co., Indiana, where he provided services to the estate of Malinda's father, as he is named as a payee in probate documents. On September 16, 1839, Elijah and Malinda sold the land in Madison Co. to Joshua Vincen. They then moved to Crawford Co., Missouri, then Pulaski Co., Missouri for less than a year, then to Dade Co., Missouri. Malinda died sometime shortly after Jeremiah was born in 1851 though no death or cemetery record has been found. By 1860, Elijah is in Arkansas, first living in Lawrence Co. and then Independence Co., and is a lay minister with the Methodist-Episcopal Church South. He died about 1879 and whether he was still living in Arkansas or had returned to Missouri is still a mystery. In addition to Barbara Jane, who was their third child, there were the following children: Sarah, born about 1832, who married a man with the last name Beevelhymer; William, born about 1834; Nancy E., born about 1843, and, Jeremiah Monroe Shinkle, born August 1851. Johannas Heinrich "John Henry" Shenkel, born December 6, 1780, and Maria Barbara Shinkle, born September 22, 1786, were Elijah's parents. Both were born in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. This is also where my Shinkle family gained double relationships. John Henry and Barbara are first cousins. They were married November 19, 1805 in Clermont Co., Ohio. John Henry died April 22, 1850, Barbara died April 4, 1864, both in Crawford Co., Missouri. They had 11 children. John Henry's parents were Philip Jacob Schenckel and Julia Ann Bolender. Maria Barbara's parents were Christian Shinkle and Maria Magdalene last name unknown. Philip Jacob and Christian were brothers. Their parents were Phillip Carl Schenckel and Maria Elizabetha Zimpelman. Phillip Carl arrived in the United States from Bavaria on the Snow Ketty arriving Philadelphia, Pennsylvania October 16, 1752. He took the Oath of Allegiance on October 20, 1752.
