Imboden United Methodist Church

By Mrs. Rosa Herron

From The Heritage of Wise County and the City of Norton - Volume I

Work began on the Imboden Methodist Church in 1920 and was completed early in 1921.

This church is identical to the church built at Dunbar, VA in 1920 and is very similar to the Exeter Church built in 1919. The Imboden Church, however, is one panel longer. It is 50 feet long by 30 feet wide. Provisions were made to heat with jacketed stoves.

In October 1921, on petition of people at Imboden, authority was given to install a pipeless furnace with the understanding that the Stonega Coal and Coke Company would furnish the material and furnace and the church people would provide the labor.

Few changes have been made since the church has been built. We now have an oil furnace for convenience. Major repairs were completed in 1984, replacing sills, plaster and some flooring.

We are trying to keep the church as authentic as when originally built, to keep alive the memory of Imboden for those who left to establish homes elsewhere.

Yes, time has made a change in Imboden and in the remaining people somewhat, but the church still stands as beautiful and well loved as ever.

Some of the pastors that have served the Imboden United Methodist Church at Imboden: Rev. Fox, Rev. W. M. Simpkins, Rev. Jackson, Rev. Robert Clark, Rev. Clancy Homer Loudy, Rev.
