I have been contacted several times about the subject of why I have not posted my family history and a short background article about myself on the site. Fact is, I never really thought about it until someone asked! I'll start with the background "sketch" and expand the page as I can find time that does not detract from creating and maintaining other pages here on Hills and Hollers.
Well, let's see...Who Am I?
I am Roy Wayne Duncan. Everyone close to me and who knows me well calls me Wayne! (Never did use that first name for much of anything and still don't unless its legal in nature!) I was born some 44 years ago in June 1961 at Lisenby Hospital in Panama City, Florida to Lee Roy Duncan and my birth-mother, Doris Ann (Scalf) Duncan. Both of them grew up in Lee County VA. They were living in Panama City as the result of my father being stationed there by the US Navy.
Life for me in Florida did not last long, as my parents' marriage did not work, they divorced and Dad brought my sister and I to live with his parents in the tiny village of Ben Hur, VA. (Sometime before my 3rd birthday)... Are you beginning to see my connection to the hills and hollers of SWVA yet?
So began the times of my childhood....I grew up much like any other boy living in the rural environment of Lee County in the 1960s. Grandpa and Grandma Duncan lived in a house that was alongside the Cane Creek across from the Lee County Vocational School. The most vivid memories I have of the homestead are the day I found a broken coke bottle in the creek by falling on it and the first day of school when I turned six. Both have extensive stories which I will not bore you with at this point!
I attended Jonesville Elementary School, which was housed in the Jonesville Institute Building, built in 1911. I was an onry buckaroo. Stayed in trouble most of the first grade, until the teachers told me I was going to have to repeat. Oh no, I was not about to re-live that bad experience! Did a whole year's work in about half the time and managed to get to the second grade and never looked back! After "graduating" from the sixth grade, I attended Jonesville High School until November 1975.
After the sudden death of Grandpa Duncan, I left Lee County to live with my father and stepmother in Virginia Beach, VA. (Dad was stationed there at this point in his career.)After settling in and get adjusted to "city life" (is there such a thing?), and two "new" sisters (for a total of three!),I finished my high school education. Dad retired from the Navy in 1979, my graduation year. Being headstrong, I did not want to move back to the hills of SWVA with them, so I became independent! Two years of struggling to keep food in my belly and a roof over my head proved to be too much, so I saw my local Navy recruiter!
In that two year span, I met the girl of my dreams, Ms. Kathy Dooley, who luckily for me, became my wife. February 16, 2006 marked our 24th wedding anniversary! In those 24 years, we have been fortunate enough to have two children, Christopher, who is now 23 and Kathryn, who is now 20.
My military career started in May of 1981 and covered many different different job assignments but luckily was stationed in the same geographical area for 18 of the 20 years. Initially, I was trained in high power electronics repair, then taught electronics repair, followed by Leadership and Management training where I spent five years teaching business management and process improvement. During those assignments, I attended college when possible and finally obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Technology Management in June, 2000. I retired from the Navy on July 31, after 20+ years of service.
Along the way somewhere, I got exposed and addicted to the "dreaded" personal computer! Fascinated by the hardware aspect, I am pretty much self-taught. Software has never been my forte but I have worked hard to become fairly intelligent in at least operating the darn things!
My involvement with genealogy started mid 1998, when I realized that I was growing older without knowing very much about either my father's family, my step-mother's family, and absolutely nothing about my birth-mother's family. (I had never met her before.) I started digging backwards through my father's lines and stumbled across the USGenWeb Census Project website which was offering the 1850 Lee County VA census to anyone who would transcribe it for use in their project. Also about this time I also became associated with my "genealogy mom." Ms. Dot Wilson Duncan (no relation as of yet!) refused to let me give up when the searching got difficult. Also shortly after that time, I posted a notice about my birth mother on the Internet and was contacted by Ms. Margaret Fleenor (who is a descendant of my birth mother's ancestors). She provided me with an enormous amount of information and guidance, both personal and genealogical in nature. I am forever grateful to these two individuals for their help
I was contacted by my aunt from the Scalf family line and my family and I traveled to western TN to meet her. A year later (July, 2000) I met my birth mother at the first Scalf family reunion I have attended. I hope to attend a Duncan family reunion sometime and a Ferguson family reunion as well. I have so many family members now! Sometimes I get confused who is who and have to revert back to the computer to sort them all out!
Genealogy research has provided me a way to find new friends as well. The USGenWeb Census Project all volunteer staff, particularly the current Board of Directors (humbly, I am the past-president of this group now!), have helped me channel my computer skills into a very productive project. The Project continues to grow and provide free online census data for genealogical researchers. Another group of friends that I must mention are the members of the Russell County VA Genealogy Chat Room! What a wild bunch but they'd give you anything they had to help you! I've learned a tremendous amount from both groups and cherish the relationships!
In November 2003, I underwent heart valve replacement surgery and an aortic anuerysm repair. I had a full pulmonary failure while in surgery and spent the next 37 days in a drug-induced coma, in an attempt to stablize my oxygen level. After awakening, I spent another 65 days in the hospital recuperating from that event. A total of 102 days in the hospital. I had to learn to walk and talk again, feed myself and various other events of daily living. I am thankful for every visitor who came to the hospital and everyone who sent a card or email wishing me well. I was discharged on February 25th, 2004 and have made significant progress in my recovery. I have been diagnosed with irrepairable neuropathy in my feet, legs, arms, and hands.
I have completed my graduate program and in December 2004 was awarded a Masters of Elementary Education from Old Dominion University. My concentration areas are middle school (6-8) Language Arts and Social Studies. I have been fortunate enough to teach 7th grade English at Smithfield Middle School in Smithfield, VA. (Yes, that is the town where most of the VA style ham comes from!) In my first year of teaching, I have found new energies and new difficulties but, all in all, I couldn't be happier with my profession! I will always be learning how to be a better teacher, both academically and socially! So much to learn and such a small head!
OK....enough is enough! How did I get here? The Hills and Hollers Website came about as the result of a trip back to the hills of Lee County. Dot Duncan was headed to the county to do more research and wanted someone to drive her about the county. (She is a flat-lander from Florida.) I could only get away for a weekend but drove there to meet her personally for the first time. We perused the county and the surrounding areas, me driving and giving her as much background as I could. I realized I knew very little about the place I call home! While attending the Mountain Empire Days Craft show in Big Stone Gap, I joined the Wise County Historical Society. After returning home, I realized I had a lot of information that I had collected but had no means of readily sharing it with anyone. I was teaching myself the HTML markup language after getting some very good beginnings with my work with the census organization. I was contacted by Ms. Rhonda Robertson, who was looking for a way to put Wise County's historical information on the Internet. She asked if I would join them as the webmaster. The Historical Society would provide the information to me and allow me to use it if I would format it for use on the Internet. A match was made. Unfortunately, that association did not last long. We found that it was much easier for the Historical Society to have a local contact so that files did not have to be sent all over the Internet just to get published. I am appreciative that they allowed me to keep the information I had transcribed and allowed me to use it on the Hills and Hollers site. Many other folks started contributing information and what you see on Hills and Hollers is the result of many people's efforts. My email address book holds over 400 contacts now, family and friends alike!
