it known by these present:
That we Barker M. Howe and Laura L. Howe his wife residing at this city
of Cedar Falls in Black Hawk County Iowa do hereby adopt as our own this minor
child Grace whose further name is not known and the names of whose parents are
not known whose residence is at said City of Cedar Falls and whose age is four
years on the 5th day of September 1886.
The said child shall hereafter be known and called Grace Belle Howe and
we herby confer upon her all the rights privileges and responsibilities which
would pertain to her if born to us in lawful wedlock.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands on this 4th
day of August 1884.

this day of August 1884 before me a Notary Public in and for said County
personally came Barker M. Howe and Laura L. Howe his wife whose names are
affixed to the foregoing instrument of adoption and William Morris Mayor of the
City of Cedar Falls in Black Hawk County Iowa and whose name is affixed to this
consent to such adoption here to ???? each to us known to be the identical
persons who have severally signed this same and each acknowledged the same to be
their voluntary act and did witness my hand and Notorial Seal at the date above
written.

it known that whereas it has been shown to me that the child Grace - named in
the foregoing instrument of adoption signed by Barker M. Howe and Laura L. Howe
is a resident of the City of Cedar Falls in Black Hawk County Iowa and that she
has been and remains abandoned by her parents whose names and residence are not
known. Now therefore I Wm Morris the Mayor of the City of Cedar Falls aforesaid
do hereby consent to the adoption of the said child Grace by the said Barker M.
Howe and Laura L. Howe the said name is to be called and known as Grace Belle
Howe and said child is hereby given to these for the purpose of such adoption as
provided by law.
