3000. Arthur Gurshom GILLHAM (1) was born on 19 Oct 1905 in St. Louis, MO. He died on 30 Jul 1968 in Granite City, Madison Co., IL. Arthur and his first wife were married around 1927.



Arthur and Wilma were married at the Third Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri.



He was, for a time, a trombonist in the Tate Band in Granite City, Illinois.



He was a machinist by trade. He worked, for a time, at Owens-Illinois Glass in Alton, Illinois. He spent most of his life, almost 40 years, working at the General Steel Castings Corporation plant in Granite City where he was a machinist.



He was a member of several social organizations including O.E.S., and the Masons. He was also a Sunday school teacher at the 2nd Baptist Church in Granite City.

Arthur Gillham, 62, local church leader, dies - Arthur G. Gillham, 62 of 2109 Bryan Avenue, died at his home at 1:10 A.M. Tuesday and was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He had been ill for four years and under medical care.



Born in St. Louis, he had lived here for 61 years. He was employed at General Steel Industries as a Journeyman Machinist and worked there 38 years.



He resided at the Bryan Avenue address 40 years.



A 47 year member of the Second Baptist Church, he had taught Sunday School there since he was 17 years old. He was ordained as a deacon of the church in 1931.



Well known in church work and civic activities, he was also a past president of the Madison County Baptist Church Brotherhood Association; a member of the Modern Woodmen of America; Machinist Lodge 572; Masonic Lodge 835; Low Twelve Club; Swor
d of Bunker Hill; St. Clair Council 61; Past HIgh Priest Royal Arch 221; Past Watchman of Shepherds; Gabriel Shrine 78 and Past Patron of New Hope Chapter 432 order of Eastern Star.



Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Wilma L. Gillham; two sons, William E. Gillham of Los Angeles, California, and Herbert (Joe) Gillham of Rolla, Missouri. A granddaughter who resided with them, Therisa Ann Gillham.



He was preceded in death by his parents, former fourth ward alderman and Mrs. D.B. Gillham, and a brother, William Lacey Gillham. Arrangements are given in today's obituary column.

His remains lie in state at Mercer Mortuary, 1416 Niedringhaus Avenue, Granite City. Funeral services at 2 P.M. Friday, August 2, Second Baptist Church, West 22nd Street and Missouri Avenue. Interment Sunset Hill Cemetery, Edwardsville Township
. White Shrine services were held Wednesday at 8 P.M. and Masonic services will be held at 8 O'clock tonight, August 1.

He was married to Sarah Millissa SPRINGFIELD on 24 Nov 1926. Sarah Millissa SPRINGFIELD(1) was born on 22 Oct 1905 in Providence, KY. She died on 1 Sep 1939 in Granite City, Madison Co., IL. Woman dies suddenly while getting ready for friend's funeral - Mrs. Sarah Millissa Gillham, 33, of 2109 Bryan Avenue, fell dead at her home at 12:40 last Friday, a few minutes after complaining of a sever head pain and just before she was to dr
ive an automobile in the double funeral of Mrs. Ollie Ramsey and her son, John, airplane crash victims.



Testimony at the inquest conducted by deputy coroner Ferd Piper showed that she had taken a headache tablet, but this was not thought to have had any bearing of her sudden death. The jury returned a verdict of death from natural causes withou t
giving a probable cause.



Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Second Baptist Church and interment was made in Sunset Hill Cemetery by the Mercer Funeral Home.



Surviving Mrs. Gillham are her husband, Arthur; a son, William Eugene, her mother, Mrs. Viola Springfield, and a sister, Mrs. Evadyne Todd, all of this city.



It was later decided that Millissa died of an apparent brain hemorrhage in her home. She was buried at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Glen Carbon, Madison County, Illinois. Arthur Gurshom GILLHAM and Sarah Millissa SPRINGFIELD had the following children:
