Henry Jones' father-in-law, William Stiles, Sr., was born in
Mecklenburg County, Virginia on March 26, 1769. Hetty Vinson was
born on July 4, 1769. Hetty Vinson's father was Jesse Vinson,
who died on January 12, 1801. Her mother was Esther Vinson, born
on April 11, 1721, and died on January 1, 1820--aged 98 years, 9
Following the route taken by Long's Expedition two year's
previous, the family headed south in 1819 toward the Red River.
The journey was very difficult over the Ozark Mountains along the
Poteau River. Thomas Nuttall left Fort Smith on May 16, 1819
along with a company of soldiers led by Major Bradford, also
bound for the confluence of the Kiamicha and Red Rivers. Nuttall
recorded the rocky ridges they had to pass and marveled that the
Stiles family had crossed the mountains with their loaded wagon
and family that included Stiles' mother-in-law, Hetty Vinson, who
was blind and 98 years of age. Upon arriving at the Red River,
William Stiles settled west of the Kiamicha River on the edge of
a prairie surrounded by wooded hills, about four miles from the
future site of Fort Towson, Oklahoma. The family probably
consisted of the following: Esther Vinson (age 98), William
Stiles (50), Hetty Stiles (49), Richard Stiles (26), John Stiles
(22), William Stiles, Jr. (20), Nancy Stiles (14), Sally Stiles
(12), and Hetty Stiles (11).

William and Hetty Stiles were married in Elbert County,
Georgia on May 24, 1792, and may have also lived in Oglethorpe
County Georgia prior to their move to Barren County, Kentucky
before 1797--where John Stiles was born. William Stiles moved
from Barron County about 1816/18 and lived at the mouth of
Mulberry Creek on the Arkansas River, northeast of Fort Smith.
The family lived briefly at the mouth of Mulberry Creek, but were
forced to leave this property when it was ceded to the Cherokee
Indians. An 1819 petition from the Missouri Territorial
Legislature sought relief for Stiles and the other settlers
uprooted from the public land they occupied.
