2. John Wakefield 1 (John [1589]1) was born in 1615 in Gravesend, County Of Kent, England and died on July 18, 1667 in Boston, Massachusetts, at age 52.

General Notes: John along with his brothers Thomas and Richard Wakefield arrived in America between 1635 and 1647.
Upon his arrival in Boston, John Wakefield purchased a tract of land on the south side of the Middle (now Hanover) street, extending from the corner of what is now Prince street, to within ninety feet of the street now named Richmond, and to rear from Middle street 184 and half feet, reaching nearly to North Square and North Street. Through the center of this, nearly at right angles with Middle Street, he opened a narrow lane or alley, making the entire estate accessible from Middle Street. For more than a century it was generally known by Bostonians, as "Wakefield's Alley."
The records of the avocation of John, as a boatman or shipwright, and his possessions of a half interest in "one old boat" and "one new boat" in the records of the administration of his estate, tend to strongly confirm the theory of his commercial relations with Thomas and Richard Wakefield, of Maryland, the boats being used for intercourse up and down the coast. See also, sketch of John's son Samuel , who on his removal to Salem, MA after his father's death, engaged also in coast, trading, and furthermore with nearly the same locality, in Maryland.
This coast trading between John of Boston, and Thomas and Richard of Maryland, was undoubtedly also the original occupation that caused John's son John and several of his grandsons to become mariners.
"A sad accident happened at Boston to one Wakefield, a boatman, who helping ye ropemaker about a cable, had his head split open and his brains beaten out, dated July 19, 1667." (Rev. S. Danforth's Records, p 166)

Henry Wakefield (spelled Weakfield) on some early records) was born May 1752 in Albemarle co, Virginia, a son of Charles and Elizabeth (Moore) Wakefield. He moved to Burke County North Carolina at an early age and enlisted in Captain William Penlan's Troop in September 1775. He was stationed for two month's at "Cathey's Fort." He then marched across the Blue Ridge Mountains against the Cherokee Indians and while with a hunting party shot one of them but while reloading his gun, received a shot in the back from another Indian and was left as dead by others in his company. He evidently was recovered fully because his pension record says he next enlisted in Captain Thomas Kennedy's Troop of Light Horse and served on short tours. He then enlisted in Captain John Russel's Company, Colonel Joseph McDowell's Regiment and served about 5 months, during which he received a slight wound in his mouth. For all this service he was given credit for one years service on the pension record.
Henry Wakefield was first married to Elizabeth Alexander, daughter of William and Elizabeth Alexander on March 20, 1778, place and date of her death are not known. Henry Wakefield then married Mary, on October 25, 1791 in Burke Co., North Carolina. She was born January 23, 1773. the place of her birth is not known and there is not actual proof of her maiden name but on her application for pension after her husband's death she states that James Simpson, age 82, residing in White Co., Tennessee is a "Near relation." Henry Wakefield died November 13, 1850 in Macon Co., Tennessee, the date of his wife Mary's death is not known. Since Macon Co., Tennessee was from Smith County in 1842, it is thought that Henry had not moved the county had just changed. The above information was from the Revolutionary War Pension record of Henry and Mary Wakefield.

General Notes: William had gone to California during the time of the gold rush. Apparently after making his fortune, he drowned in the Atlantic when the ship "Central America" sank (9/12/1857) about 200 miles off the South Carolina coast. This ship was carrying huge sums of gold bullion from California, and it's sinking caused a major financial crisis for the United States.
In a letter dated March 1858, Difficult, Tennessee from William Draper to his son Benjamin in Texas: "It is thought that H.H. Kemp and Jack Wakefield's son that went to California and started home and was on a ship CENTRAL AMERICA and it sunk and almost every passenger was lost, them being among the missing."
Copied from the OAKLAND TRIBUNE KNAVE Section, Oakland, California Sunday September 25, 1955;

Hurricane California An unprecedented number of hurricanes blasting away at our Atlantic Coast reminds that this month is the 98th anniversary of what Historian John Walton Caughey sets down as "California's crowning disaster," a Catastrope that claimed the lives of 419 Californians as a result of notheing less than a hurricane. Yet that big wind of 1857 came nowhere near California. Instead, it centered its fury on the so-called palatial steamer CENTRAL AMERICA which was making its way from Aspin-wall to New York City with 491 passengers and a crew of 101. Practically all of the passengers picked up at Aspinwall were from the Steamer SONORA that had sailed out of San Francisco on August 20. The buffeted CENTRA AMERICA sank on September 12 off the coast of Florida, several hundred miles south of Cape Hatteras. Only 173 were saved, mostly women and children, according to the San Francisco news-paper Alta California issued on October 23, 1857, the day news of the catastrophe reached San Francisco via the steamer PANAMA just in from Panama. It is interest-ing to note that this was 41 days after the sea tragedy. The newspaper told the sad news between turned column rules that made for bold , black borders , which usually accompany such news of national tragedy as the death of our nation's president. The story of the disaster took up seven columns on the Alta's front page and included the CENTRAL AMERICA'S complete passenger list, a list of the rescued and a list of those who lost their lives or were still missing. In the same issue the editor noted: "In relation to the effectof the terrible catastrophe upon immigration to California we shall have more to say hereafter

100. Henry L. Wakefield 5 (John W.81, Henry65, Charles Sr.56, Abel Jr38, Abel13, Thomas4, John [1589]1) was born about 1825 in Wittchers Crossroads, Smith County, Tennessee and died on August 15, 1858 in Smith County, Tennessee, about age 33.

General Notes: At this point we are not sure of Henry's Middle name we have seen it listed as an L, B, and Moses so at this point we are not sure of his middle name.

We remember my father telling me that his father was killed working in a saw mill or lumber yard seems like we can remember him saying a pile of logs fell on him. and this was how he met his death.

General Notes: There is some question as to the name of Addison Monroe Wakefield,

According to Harry M. Cleveland who has did a lot of research on the Wakefields has his name as Monroe Addison Wakefield, he is also listed in the 1860 Smith County, Tennessee census as Munroe, and he is listed as Adason M. Austin in the 1870 Census, This should read Addison M. Austin.

As we remember my father saying that they had recorded his name wrong at birth, he used the name of Addison M. Wakefield and all the documentation we have is listed as Addison M. Wakefield he also signed his name as A.M. Wakefield, and that is how we knew him. Since we can't prove or disaprove it we are going with A.M. Wakefield.

Addison Monroe Wakefield Passed away at the home of his daughter Ruby Dee Smith in Mangum, Greer County, Oklahoma.

Floy Evelyn Wakefield (Charles Edgar183, James Simpson145, Henry L.100, John W.81, Henry65, Charles Sr.56, Abel Jr38, Abel13, Thomas4, John [1589]1) was born on July 15, 1902 in Sweet Water, Texas and died on February 21, 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at age 31. The cause of her death was tuberculosis.

General Notes: Evelyn attended and graduated (Bachelor of Arts, Music & Eduction) from Phillips University, Enid Oklahoma (1920-1924). The first time she returned home after starting college (1920), she shocked the family by bringing home a deck of cards. It might as well have been a case of whiskey! They were very concerned the neighbors might hear of or see these implements of gambling. Evelyn eventually went to the University of Oklahoma, Norman Okla. and earned her Masters of Arts (Education) in 1925. She met her husband at Phillips University. (Ref.: Ferne and Gladys Wakefield, 12/8/95)
She contracted tuberculosis from her husband. Although sick for only a month, she died during surgery to remove the infected lung. (Ref.: Gladys Wakefield, 12/8/95)

Floy married Arthur Herbert Haney on August 24, 1924 in Enid, Oklahoma. Arthur was born on March 9, 1896 in Lexington, Kentucky and died on April 23, 1937 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at age 41. The cause of his death was tuberculosis.

General Notes: Arthur Haney served in U.S.Army in Europe during World War II. He was gassed by the Germans and suffered lung damage. He apparently contracted tuberculosis about this time, but it was arrested.
His skill at Stud Poker led to his Nickname "Stud." After returning to the U.S. he played basketball for a professional team and was so good that Phillips University offered him an athletic scholarship. While on the Phillips University Basketball Team they won their league Championship. After graduating from Phillips University, Haney went to the University of Oklahoma and graduated from the Medical School. He did his internship at the University Hospital, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Haney worked very hard as a Doctor, was well liked and highly regarded. His friends feared that he was not getting enough rest, and his tuberculosis flaired up again. Clyde Northrup, his brother-in-law drove him to the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque New Mexico, but the altitude was too high. So Haney called the Northrup's to please come and take him home. Haney stayed with Clyde Northrup's family in Oklahoma City for several months and then went to the Tuberculosis Sanitorium in Oklahoma City, Okla. where he died.

General Notes: Gladys Opal Wakefield was born in Mangum, the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) on Christmas Eve, 1906. When she was seven years old, on the fourth of July in Anadarko, OK, her family always took a picnic to the town park. She had been saving her money for months and probably had thirty-five cents. There was a man at the park who cranked a little box with ice cream and sang,"Hokey-Pokey Ice Cream, stirred with a spade, and made in the shade. Freezes your teeth and curls your hair, and makes you feel like a millionaire. Hokey-Pokey Ice Cream!" Actually it tasted more like lemon sherbert. (Story from Gladys and Ferne Wakefield, 1995)
When Gladys attended Oklahoma City University, she was an outstanding archer and in 1925 won the Oklahoma State Archery Contest at Norman OK. Also in 1925, Gladys won the Oklahoma State Singing Contest as a contralto-soprano and was offered a music scholarship to study at La Scala, Italy. Gladys married Clyde John Marshall Northrup on September 12, 1926 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Clyde was born on November 15, 1903 in Pikeville, Tennessee and died on April 23, 1982 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at age 78. The cause of his death was parkinson's Disease.

General Notes: Clyde John Marshal Northrup was named for his mother's, Ethel May Farmer's, two brothers who died as babies. Clyde weighed 36 pounds when he was six months old, and people came from the other side of mountains in Tenn. to see the oddity. When his father, John A., brought the family to Oklahoma City, both Clyde and his brother Loy enjoyed country living: goat carts, horses, target shooting and hunting with rifles. Clyde attended and graduated from the Wentworth Boy's Military Academy, Kansas City. He was a member of the Sigma Pi Epsilon Fraternaty. He worked as a salesman for his father's appliance business and prospered. When he left Oklahoma City in 1938 to get back to country living, they purchased a defunct chicken farm in nearby Nicoma Park. They helped found the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, at Nicoma Park. Clyde loved animals and purchased a menagery of the most common farm animals. During this time of the Great Depression, they would probably be considered financially poor. They ate a lot of corn bread, grew a lot of their own food which they canned, but they had strong family support and enjoyed the country life emmensely. Clyde tried to enlist in the military when World War II began, but his poor teeth eliminated him from serving. So he soon got a job as a Civil Servant at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Okla. While at Tinker, his experience with intricate sewing machine parts proved valuable as he received an award for major design improvements of the U.S. bombsight. After the War (1946), he took another Civil Servant job at Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii that was primarily managing logistics of the troops and materials returning from the pacific. The Northrups initially lived across the street, just west of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, about a block from Waikiki beach. By 1980, the house they lived at in Honolulu had been replaced by a bank, but the large palm trees in their front yard had been preserved and still had Evelyn and Clyde Jrs. initials carved in them. After a few months, they moved to Pearl City for several months, then on to some renovated barracks on Hickam for a few more months. Finally they got on-base housing for the balance of their stay in the islands. Clyde entered Masonry while in the islands. Duke Honomoku, the famous Hawaian Surfing Athelete, sponsored Clyde into the Hawaiian Masonic Lodge. After two years in the islands, Clyde and Gladys became homesick, and so in 1948, he returned the familiar work at Tinker Base in Oklahoma City. Then a friend, Al Gruer formerly from Tinker, called Clyde and asked if he would be interested in a job at a new government laboratory, Sandia (National) Laboratory, near Albuquerque, NM. Clyde had a strong desire for a challenging job in public service and national security. So he moved his family to Albuquerque NM in 1949. Clyde helped gather information on U.S. nuclear weapons field tests in the Pacific and the Nevada Test Site. Early in the 1950's he established a long landing site in New Mexico at the White Sands Missle Range, "Northrup Strip," where heavily loaded airplanes could be tested. Northrup Strip was where the U.S. Space Shuttle landed. Clyde finally retired from Sandia in 1972. Clyde earned his 32 Degree in Masonry, joined the Shrine, and in his later years was active in their charitable activities. After his funeral, his wife Gladys remarked at how many men had come to her that day and said, "Clyde was my best friend."
