Klingensmith/Shoop Marriages
A number of marriages between the Klingensmith and Shoop families of Western Pennsylvania can be found. Here I list those which I have identified and the lineages of the bride and groom involved.
(Caveats and other small print: This account includes only those Klingensmith/Shoop marriages in which the Shoops are related to the family of Jacob Shoop of Montgomery County. Identifications of bride and groom are based on available compilations of the Klingensmiths and Shoops, supplemented, and in some cases superceded by available primary documents. I have not been able to confirm all of the information privided here with contemporary records.)
First, an introduction of the two families:
Shoop - Immigrant brothers Jacob and Michael Schub arrived in Philadelphia on the Hero in 1763. After serving out apprenticeships under Dietrick Welker of Salford Twp., Montgomery COunty, they married in Worcester Twp., and lived for a time in Providence Twp. Jacob moved to Chester County before relocating in Westmoreland County. In addition to a herd of daughters, he had (perhaps with others) two sons, Michael and Jacob. Michael accompanied his father, and lived in Westmoreland and (lat in life) Allegheny Counties. He had a family of eight children, who lived in Armstrong and Allegheny Counties. Jacob preceeded his father west, and lived out the rest of his life in Allegheny Twp., Armstrong family, also having a large family that lived there.
Klingensmith - contrary to popular accounts of a long American pedigree, brothers Johann Philip and Johann Peter Klingenschmidt were immigrants to this country, coming in 1738 on the ship Robert and Alice with their father Daniel Klingenschmidt. Daniel was from Tieffenbach, Alsace, and following his arrival in Philadelphia settled at Salisbury Twp., (then) Northampton Co., PA. Peter and Philip, and their families eventually migrated along the PA/MD border to establish a blockhouse in Westmoreland County prior to the Revolution. Both Philip and Peter had large families, and left sizable progeny.
