Platt, Mark McQueen (b. 1954, d. 13 JUN 2000)

Man suspected in fatal shooting near Port Orange in custody
By CHRISTINE PRESTON (chris.preston@@news-jrnl.com)
Staff Writer
PORT ORANGE - Frank A. Jackson, suspect in the fatal shooting of an area business owner on June 13, was captured in a wooded area off Madeline Avenue Tuesday night, ending a weeklong manhunt by sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement officials.

Jackson, 35, of Old Samsula Road, is accused of shooting his neighbor, Mark M. Platt, 45, in the chest with a .22-caliber rifle on June 13. Platt was the owner-operator of Platt's Well Drilling and Platt's Well Pump & Sprinkler Co.

Jackson was taken into custody by deputies in the area of Madeline and Clyde Morris Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday. Members of the Northeast and Southeast Narcotics task forces and the Florida Marine Patrol helped with the arrest, said sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson.

Davidson said deputies learned of Jackson's whereabouts through an acquaintance.

"Mr. Jackson contacted the acquaintance sometime this morning and requested some assistance," Davidson said Tuesday. "He asked him to deliver money and clothing and they established a drop point."

Davidson said the acquaintance immediately contacted the Sheriff's Office.

"We had him proceed with the drop and at 8:30 p.m. we had the area under surveillance," he said. "At 10:15, he came out of the woods to pick up the bag."

Davidson said when officers moved toward Jackson, he ran and jumped into a nearby retention pond and began swimming in an attempt to elude capture. However, he was taken into custody and was being processed at the Sheriff's Operations Center on Indian Lake Road at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Davidson said he was not sure what condition Jackson was in or what he was wearing, but said he did not require medical attention.

Jackson was arrested about seven miles from the fatal shooting scene on Old Samsula Road, just west of Port Orange.

Deputies initially were dispatched to the Old Samsula Road neighborhood on June 13 after receiving several 911 calls between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m. about a quarrel between Jackson and his girlfriend, Inez Platt, who is Mark Platt's sister.

Dispatchers also received at least one call about a woman who was bleeding from the head and running across a yard.

Davidson said deputies converged on the area within minutes. Inez Platt told officers she and Jackson began to argue after she asked him to leave.

She said Jackson struck her in the head with a glass globe and she fled next door to her brother's house. When deputies arrived, she returned home to speak with them while her brother went to confront Jackson.

As deputies interviewed Inez Platt, a shot rang out. They ran across the street and found Mark Platt dead in a field.

Clad in only blue jeans, Jackson ran into nearby woods. Deputies searched the woods throughout the night and the next day. At one point, Jackson contacted investigators about surrendering but never met the deadline set to turn himself in. He had been on the run ever since.

Jackson faces one count each of first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance this afternoon.

Thank you for responding to my email. I will email you within the week with
some new names and dates. I know most of them but would like to verify
before we add them. I was born in Orlando but moved to Alaska in 1978. My
mom (Frances Inez Platt), moved back to Daytona Beach in 1992. She lives in
the house that my grandpa (Louis), built and lived in until his death in 94.
My family is moving back to Florida in Nov. probably around Lakeland where
my father lives. I have double Platt in me, my parents were first cousins
so Brothers: Louis & George Platt are my maternal and paternal
grandfathers. I will write soon. Thanks, Chrissy Cogdill

Hi. Here is some info, if you would like to add it to the family tree. I would do it myself but I think I have to go in and create a whole new one just to enter a little new info. By the way, my dad's name is Carl Richard Platt (He goes by Richard) he has lived in Lakeland since I was born. My grandpa Louis has always lived in Daytona from as far back as anyone can remember. My mom and aunts and uncle's were all born there, so he at least lived there since 1952. I know that Aunt Lessie made a huge family tree and sent it out to allot of the family. Did you get one? My mom has one but I noticed that allot of the information is wrong or left out. Here is what I know:

1. Louis Mcquen Platt (Middle name is spelled with a q and not a c, at least from him down.) B: 8/14/1929 D: 2/9/1994
spouse: (My maternal grandmother), Frances Ard Meeks B:7/11/34 D:2/21/98. She had a child from a previous marriage his name is Fred ? Ard B: 12/25/51 and is still living. Their children together are: Mark ? Platt B: ?? D: 2000
My mother, Frances Inez Platt B: 12/6/56, still living and my aunt Penny (Panzy), Lee Platt Lozon. She had her first name legally changed!

2. My mom, Frances Inez Platt had 3 children: Me, Frances Christine Platt Cogdill B:11-3-74, Jason Mcquen Pennington B: 8/1/78 and Tyler James Alvis B: 5/20/93 and died 5/10/97.

3. My aunt penny has no children but is married to Michael Leslie Lozon.

4. Uncle Mark has 4 kids (not all biological) Shawn, Luke, Tara and Tia

5. I had 2 kids: Dustin James Lovell born 11/24/93 and died 5/8/97. Also, Dylan Christopher Cogdill, born 3/7/99. And another on the way!!! My husbands name is Chelsea Dylan Cogdill born: 4/8/75.

Yes, my grandpa is George Platt. He is my dad's father. My grandmother is Anna Marie Brady (still living), she and Grandpa George had 6 kids. William, Richard, Michael, Joy, Edith and ??? I can't remember my other aunts name.

Hope this helps, Sorry it's sketchy in some places.

Chrissy

Hi Christopher,

Yes, my dad later married Louise, they are in the process of a divorce right
now. Their only child together, (My brother), is Richard William Platt
(Ricky) I believe he was born in 79, but not positive about that.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name is Meeks, she does not have a middle
name. Ard is her married name from her first husband.

Yes, my mother was married several times. First to my dad, then to my
brother Jason's father (Rudy Hafner), then to Willard Keith Pennington who
actually adopted Jason because his real father, Rudy, died of cancer.
That's how Jason got the last name Pennington. Finally she was married to
James Bo Alvis (Bo). He is Tyler's father. They divorced a year or so
after Tyler died. She is now single. Whoa! I know that is allot to take
in!!!

My Uncle Mark's children were both biological, adopted, and stepchildren.
Shawn, his first son, is naturally his. He was raised with his mother and a
step-father and did not know that U. Mark was his real father until he died
in 2000. Shawn's mothers name is April. His second son, Luke is also
biologically his. His mother's name is Elaine. Tara was adopted by U. Mark
and his wife (at the time), Joanie. Tia is Cheryl's daughter. Cheryl was
U. Mark's wife at the time of his death. Tia has a real father still alive
and had some contact with him but U. Mark raised her mainly.

My paternal grandmother, Anna Marie Brady (Marie), is still alive and lives
in Kissimmee. She is very good with dates and all this information about
the family, so if you need to know anything, I know she would be happy to
help you!!! Her address is: 1818 Lake Terrace Ave., St. Cloud, Fl.
34772-7458 and her phone number is 407-892-2896.

Thank you for mentioning my son and brother, Dustin & Tyler. They actually
died in an accident together at my U. Mark's house in Daytona Beach in 97.
My son and I were on vacation in Florida, when the two boys left my mom's
house to walk down to my U. Mark's house (about 100 yards away), to play
with Tia. When we realized that it was Wednesday night and U. Mark, Cheryl,
and Tia were gone to church, we walked down to find them. The boys were
found in the retention pond my Uncle had on his property. We pulled the
boys out and did cpr. They both were revived at the hospital and flown to
Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital in Orlando. My son died the next morning
and Tyler died a couple days later when we took him off of life support.
They had determined that he had no brain activity left. You may remember
hearing about it, the media really bombarded us and were extremely rude,
when we refused comment they pretty much made up their own story, by taking
their opinion and spreading it on the news. I lost complete respect for the
media during that time. Anyway, if you would like to see pictures of my
family you can visit this web-site:
http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/d/dylanak/
if you click on the photo gallery you will see extended pictures including
Dustin & Tyler. Dustin is in the blue shirt, Tyler in the white. Those
pictures were taken one week before they died. If for some reason the above
link does not work, just go to www.babiesonline.com, click on babies pages,
and then type in Cogdill, and Dylan's page will come up.

Good luck on your upcoming adventure with having children. It will be the
greatest time of your life, I guarantee!!! Having your own children is
absolutely miraculous!!!

Thanks, Chrissy
