Note: The information on William comes from the LDS ancestral files and an
article written by Helen Weaver Casada. Helen is the ggggdaughter of
William. The article by Helen was in a book in the Library in Blue Ridge
GA that I read on one of our trips to the south. The information is not
exactly the same from the two sources, but most of the data matches. I
put the data together the best I could.
When William applied for a Revolutionary War pension on Oct. 4, 1824, he
stated he had a boy of age, a girl about 12, a boy about 10, a wife 55
and consumptive (TB). At the time of his death, which was published as
being in March 1852, William supposedly was living in Gilmer Co., GA, but
he was not listed in the 1850 census in either Gilmer or Union Co. One
source gives DOD as March 4, 1852 in Union CO., GA.
Wm. D. Underwood, H Co., of Rutherford Co. was in the NC Regiment in

Spouses?

3rd Margaret Wilson
Listed as William Wedgbare Underwood on Cherokee Indian Claim for monies by grandson William S. Underwood, May 18, 1905
On the 13th of July 1804, Barrot Underwood, aged 5 years the 12 of July, is bound unto Charles RUFF (Will book 2, page 129); July 1804 Lewis Underwood bought at the sale of estate of Francis Reynolds, deceased (Will book.,2 page 127 & 128); 6th December 1805, Anna UNDERWOOD binds herself, her daughter Betsey and her son Joel unto John R. Johnson (Will book 1, page 143 and 144) [ Wilkes Co., NC wills ? (e-mail Harold Cochran October 22, 1998)]
That item names Barrett, Joel, and Betsey as belonging to Anna with William Underwood.
The Cherokee claims added the name of James to that list.
by Seaborn Underwood, a son of Joel, named his father as son of Anna and Barrett, Bennett, James, and Bettie as his siblings. by Lousinda Mitchell dau of Joel, their father was the son of Anna, and Barrett, Bennett, James, and Bettie were siblings.
So far I would believe that Barrett, Bennett, Joel, James and Bettie were by Anna.
That would leave Fielding, Elijah, Enoch, David, Jesse, Eliza and William by Mary "Polly" Eastridge
Margaret Wilson and William had Thomas Jefferson, Columbus, Joseph, and Nelson.
(Also William is found living with Elijah and could be Elijah's son not a brother) or there is two Williams about the same age, one of William and the other Elijah. <just my thoughts>
Also according to the bond Bettie must be Eliza who would be about ten at time of the bond.-(source: e-mail from Harold Cochran July 2, 1998, no county or state is mentioned)

Hi
Just ran the search for William Underwood in a new 'Military Records: Revolutionary War Pension
list" and got a hit on our William Wedgbar.
The results:
A statement, &c of the county of Haywood, North Carolina.
Name Rank Annual allowance Sums received Description of Service When Placed on Pension Age
Wm. Wedgbare,alias
Wm Underwood, Private, 96.00 , 855.69 Virginia Continental line, May 24, 1825,April 6, 1825
75.
According to that data William Underwood would be born in the year 1750 instead of 1759

Note: It is said that Fielding and his wife Elizabeth Land were the first of
the name to come to Haywood Co. NC. They came from Towns Co. GA. and
settled in what has since been called East Waynesville. There is some
confusion since Fielding and Elizabeth married in Haywood Co. on 17 Sep
1821 and a brother Barrett married Polly Daily 25 May 1820. It would
appear that several Underwood family members were in Haywood Co. in the
early 1820's. Fielding and Elizabeth married by John B Love and bond and
witness by Elijah Underwood. Fielding, 54, and Elizabeth, 57, are listed
in 1850 haywood Co, NC census with three children.

Appln. NO. 18964
John Underwood being duly sworn and examined,
depones and says:
My name is John Underwood. I am 68 years
old. I was born Fannin Co., Ga. My father was xxxxxxx
Wesley Barrett Underwood. I claim my Indian blood through
my father. My mother was an English woman. My father was xx
born in Buncomb Co. N.C. I do not know when he was born.
He claimed his blood through his mother, Annie Underwood,
who never was married: neither was my grandmother. My father
was 98 when he died: He has been dead 17 years, I think. His mother
was born in Buncomb Co., and raised there. I never re-
ceived any money as an Indian. My father never received any
money either. My father was a half-breed, and his mother a
fullblood.. My father, I reckon, was in Fannin Co., Ga. in
1851. My grandmother was not living in 1851. My father, I
think lived with the Indians in North Carolina at one time,
but I cannot say in what part. My father claimed to be
Cherokee. I do not know why he was not enrolled in 1851.
I do not know why he was not enrolled in 1835. I never lived among
the Indians. My father and I both voted. We were known as
white people among our neighbors. x I have heard my father
talk about mustering with the white people and voting. I
have been in Tennessee going on six years. The first time
I moved to Tennessee was about 38 years ago, and before
that lived in Fannin Co., Ga. My grandmother's name was
Annie Underwood.

Note: Bennett and Elizabeth married by John B Love. Bond and witness Barrett
Underwood. By 1830, Bennett and his brothers, Barrett, David and Elijah
and his sister Annie were all in Macon County, NC. Later brothers James
and William joined them. The 1840 census of Union Co., GA, lists Ben,
Barret, Eliza, Joel and William Underwood. This could be the father
rather than the brother. William, the father, requested his pension be
changed to GA as due to his infirmities and age, he was "desirous" of
being near his children. The 1850 census shows Barrett and David in
Union Co., GA, with children and grandchildren. Bennett, Elijah (Eliza),
James and William had moved farther south into Gilmer Co., GA. Gilmer
Co. 1860 census, Bennett and Elizabeth are listed, 61 and 60 years old.
with them are Elizabeth, 22, Ibbie, 18, and Jeptha M., 1. B., 70,
farming, $75/$234, NC and Elizabeth, 69, keeping house, NC, are listed in
the 1870 census for Gilmer Co. Elmina and Jepetha Bradford are living in
the next dwelling. The GA 1840 index lists Barrot, Bennett, Elijah
(Eliza?), Joel, and William in Union Co. GA.
My GGrandfather, Bennett was married three times. I am searching for any information in regards to his Indian wife Annie , daughter of Bushyhead. Do you have anything?

hi, I just ran across your web page looking for Roberts connection and
happened to see the Underwood line...I am descended from William W.
Underwood also...my ggg-grandfather was Jesse Underwood who migrated to
Union Co., Southern Illinois. I live in Melbourne, Fl. The Platt name
caught my eye because of the well known "Judge" Platt. Interesting how far
the "genes" of our family extends. I have a bunch of info about the
Underwoods...but most of it has now gone online. Let me know if I can ever
be of any assistance. Betty Underwood Moake of Melbourne Fla
