Hello Christopher!
I was pleased to hear from you! My neighbor is a Gilley decendent and as my husband is also...
My neighbor, Vicki Poore wanted to hear from you, but she says your email address won't go
through from her computer. Sounds funny...but anyway her email address is
vpoore@@glasgow-ky.com
How much do you know about the interesting character John Caleb Gilley? My husband is his
decendent from his first marriage to Margaret J. FREEMAN. married Nov. 25, 1864. They had 8
children John Caleb decided since they were married under a confederate government that their
marriage wasn't legally binding. (that part of Tennessee was occupied by the Union, so this
doesn't really make sense), anyway, he is available then to marry his neighbor and sweetheart
from childhood, Mahala WILLILAMS. They move to Kentucky (Edmonton) and have a family...this is
my neighbor, Vicki's relative. They become members of the church and upstanding citizens in the
community. As far as anyone knows there is no knowledge of a legal divorce. And as far as anyone
knows, John Caleb does not keep touch with his first family. After Margaret's mother dies in
TN., Margaret and the kids go to Salt Lake City , Utah and stay there, which is where Margaret
dies and most of the kids marry locally there also.

Chris,
This is the story as told to me. John Caleb married Margaret Freeman in
Coffee co.,Tn. in 1864. He also had a neighbor girlfriend, from childhood,
Mahala Williams, who he apparently continued to see. She became pregnant
with Isaac. John Caleb decided that since he and Margaret were married
under the confederate government, that the marriage was not valid, even
though they continued to have children up to at least 1870. This of course
wasn't correct. Coffee co. was under Union occupation, from late 1863,
until the end of the was.
In the 1870 census, Margaret is living with her widowed mother, and the
Gilley children, while John Caleb was living NEXT DOOR, with his widowed
mother{ and younger siblings. Around 1871 he abondoned Margaret and ran off
to Ky. with Mahala. In later years, he joined the church and became an
upstanding citizen. They decided to travel back to Tn. and get married. We
can't find record of this at present, but Isaac, in later years recalled
that he was old enough to remember, when they got married. He never
contacted any of his first family. After Margaret's mother died, she left
the area. She and some of the children traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah
with the Mormans. She apparently never married.
, and is burried in Salt Lake City as Margaret Gilley. Some of the children
stayed there and married locally.

Have you not heard any of this? Will talk later.
VICKI

Hi Christopher
I have information on John Caleb's parentage four generations back, but I do not know that it is proven or documented. This is information given to me thru the internet, so I can't verify it's authenticity.

John Caleb Gilley b. 1848 d. 1914
William P. Gilley b. 1865 m. Martha LEMMONS
Caleb H. Gilley b. 1805 m. Betty Davenport & Isabella
Bynum
Jesse H. Gilley b. 1773 m. Darcus
Charles Gilley b. 1740/50 VA m. Susannah
Francis Gilley
I know that these files list Isaac as a child of Margaret FREEMAN and John Caleb and I KNOW this is false. Isaac is a child of Mahala and John Caleb. I have emailed the historian at Cannon Co., TN and know he says that Isaac is the child of Mahala. Jess Lewis, the historian of Cannon Co., TN also can relate the story of how John Caleb cavorted with Margaret Freeman and Mahala Williams at the same time. Since Isaac is listed with the wrong mother on these files, I don't know what else may or may not be false on them.
My neighbor, Vicki Poore would be a better person to talk to. Her mother was a GILLEY and she knows this stuff much better than I. Vicki knew personally many of these people and has been to the cemetery that many Gilley's are buried...Gilley Hill in Tennessee.
Hope it helped...If you run into any info. regarding Margaret FREEMAN, hollar at me! ok?

Hello Christopher,
I do believe your Gilley information is correct. In regards to your question concerning when John Caleb and Mahala ran away...If I am remembering what Jess Lewis the historian of Cannon County correctly... Mahala was John's childhood sweetheart and lived either next door or very close by. This arrangement lasted for a while. Margaret lived with her children and an older parent until the parent's death. After the death of the parent, Margaret and the children went to Utah. The last birthdate I have is Dec. 10, 1871 and of course the child would have been concieved in November of 1870. I do remember that both women seem to have children during the same time...so, apparently John was still stringing poor Margaret along ... or perhaps Margaret was trying to hold on to John.
I had thought John Caleb was buried in Gilley Hill Cemetery in Cannon County, Tennessee. Vicki will probably know.... I don't have notes on that.
Do you have EMBERTON ancestors? I was thinking your name is familiar and that I have seen your name connected with my EMBERTON ancestors. Emberton's began in England into Virginia and Tennessee before settling in Monroe County , Ky.

By the way, I have Margaret J. FREEMAN's mom and dad and siblings.

Simeon FREEMAN born about 1817 married Elizabeth CLARK born about 1817. Their children were:
Infant Daughter, Subissie, William Franklin, John Thomas, Winfield Scott, Nancie Elizabeth, and of course...Margaret J.
Hope this helps!
Cindy

Hello Christopher, Sorry that it took me so long to reply to your last e-mail. The information I have says the following:
Children of John Caleb Gilley and Margaret J. Freeman are:
1. Simeon Dalas
2. Thomas Nuten
3. Infant daughter
4. William Peterson born Aug. 29, 1865
5. Mary Elizabeth born March 17, 1867
6. James Caleb born July 14, 1869
7. Martha Emoline born Dec. 10, 1871
As far as I know the children are in order and Martha E. is the last child born to them, but I don't know that for an absolute fact. I do believe Vicki may have the birth dates of children born to Mahala and John Caleb. Vicki is my next door neighbor, and she is gone on vacation right now. Vicki and I were talking and one of us just mentioned in passing about researching our family tree. We began comparing surnames and found that we shared John Caleb Gilley....my husband's ancestor thru Margaret J. Freeman and Vicki is a descendant thru John Caleb's marriage to Mahala. Small world....I thought it was neat that we found each other.
Hope the birthdates that I have help....I'll ask Vicki when she returns...or perhaps she has already emailed you...

Gilley, William B. (b. BEF 1834, d. ?)
Note: GEDCOM from Joyce Rodgers (Flying60@@aol.com) shows William B. Gilley to be William B. Gilley, Jr. and the son of William Bales Gilley, however I feel there are serveral factors that indicate that he is not a junior. No census records (1850, 1860, and 1870) indicate a Jr. status. It is my GUESS that he is the son of Jordan Gilley based on the fact that he is located close to Jordan Gilley on the 1850 census. Moved to Alabama between 1860 and 1870 to live near Jordan Gilley in Blount Co., Alabama. On the 1850, 1860, 1870 census William B. Gilley lives in a different county than the elder William "Judge" Bales Gilley.
