Tanner, William Charles (b. 11 JUN 1850, d. 15 APR 1903)
Note: [Robles-Marianne Crews.FTW]

William Charles Tanner was born on June 11, 1850. He was the son of Alfred Tanner. His mother's name is not known at this time. We are also uncertain of his birthplace as we have not definitely located him on a census record with his parents. However, on his death certificate and on the 1900 Hillsborough County Census his birthplace is listed as North Carolina. I would lean toward believing this to be correct as the information was given by his wife who should have been informed.

William Charles was married some time before 1876 in Indiana. He had a child/ children by this wife. One of them was his son, John who traveled to Florida with him. Presumably William Charles' wife had died. At least one daughter remained in Indiana with her maternal grandparents. Granny ( Lila Tanner) Vernon communicated with them by letter for many years and there were visits between the cousins remembered by my mother, Mary T. Vernon Copeland.

I have been unable to learn much about William Charles Tanner. No one knows exactly what his occupation was. Both Felicia Hayman Stanley and Mary T. Vernon Copeland think they remember hearing he was a gambler. I also recall hearing Maxine McIntyre say he was a gambler. None of their mothers talked much about their father who died when they were eight, thirteen, and sixteen.

William Charles married Mary Opelia/Odelia/Orphelia Robles, born November 5, 1862, daughter of Joseph Paul Robles and Mary Ann Garrison on June 11, 1885 in Tampa, Florida. They made thier home in Tampa and lived on property given to them by Mary's parent's. We don't know anything about William Charles' church affiliation. Mary O. Robles Tanner attended the Methodist Church with her children.

The Tanners had five children, four of whom grew to adulthood and are written about elswhere in this book. One daughter, Ethel W. Tanner, (she is listed as Lucy on the 1900 census) died at the age of eight from a ruptured appendix.

William Charles died at age 50, his death certificate says of senility. He was buried on April 16, 1903 in Lot 7, Block 126, Space 4, Woodlawn Cemetary in Tampa, Florida.

After the death of her husband, Mary Robles Tanner supported her children by renting out houses she owned. It is not known if these were acquired before or after her husband's death. (I need to spend some time researching property and census records in Tampa.)

Mary Robles Tanner lived with her daughter, Concheta, in later years. She died after a long illness on March 7, 1928 and is buried inLot 7, Block 126, Woodlawn Cemetary, Tampa, Florida. Her cause of death was not given on the record I recieved.

McIntyre, Donald (b. ABT 1885, d. ABT 1929)
Note: [Robles-Marianne Crews.FTW]

Donald McIntyre was born about 1885 in Polk County, Florida. I have not learned his parent's names. He married Stella E. Tanner, born October, 1886, daughter of William Charles Tanner and Mary O. Robles. They were married about 1910 in Tampa, Florida.

Donald McIntyre earned his living in the timber industry. He died from cancer in 1929 and was buried in the Bartow Cemetary.

The McIntyres resided in Polk County and had one daughter, Maxine, who was born about 1911. Maxine was in college when her father died. She completed her education and went on to teach in Lakeland Schools for many years. Maxine was a much-loved teacher and was the Senior Class Sponser for a number of years. Maxine died from cancer at age 65 and is buried in the Bartow Cemetary.

Stella Tanner McIntyre was in a nursing home when Maxine died and lived on to age 99. She, too, is buried in the Bartow Cemetary.

Robles, Joseph Paul (b. 15 SEP 1817, d. 12 FEB 1907)
Note: [Robles-Marianne Crews.FTW]

Joseph Paul Robles was born in Malaga, Spain on September 15, 1817. Nothing is known about his parents at this time. He came to the United States in 1832 as a stow-away. He jumped ship at St. Mary's Island, and hid in a well until the ship left port according to family tradition. He then went up into Georgia where unable to speak English he made signs to indicate he was hungry and would work for food. He lived with the Michael Garrison family and worked on their farm for food and shelter.
Joseph Paul married MaryAnn Garrison on December 12, 1841. Their family Bible states they were married at
Ft. Fanning, Florida . MaryAnn was born on February 15, 1827 in Effingham County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Michael Garrison and Mary Zetour.
The Florida Armed Occupation Act records show Joseph Robles, Toachades, Head of Family, September, 1837.
We know he fought in the Indian Wars. I have also learned there are Naturalization Records on Joseph Paul.
It is said Joseph Paul made a statement at the beginning of the Civil War saying he did not agree with fighting against the country he had pledged to support but he had to follow the state in which he resided. He served in the Confederacy during the Civil War and was captured and held on a Prison Ship for some time. During the Civil War Joseph Paul also distinguished himself by single-handedly capturing the entire crew of a Gun Ship and marching them several miles into Tampa. It seems he spotted the ship coming in while standing guard and placed guns all around the area. After the crew had landed he waited until he had them surrounded and ran from gun to gun making the men think there were several people with him. The crew gave up and Joseph marched them into Tampa which was several miles away. (Some sources say the gun he was carrying was empty as he had run out of ammunition.) This was quite a feat.
According to information in Tampa Town, Joseph Paul was a very small man, being 5'4" tall and a small build. The same source says he had blue eyes. He apparently was a very talented man and was accomplished as a suveyor, farmer, and builder. He received a homestead land grant and added to it until he owned many acres along the Hillsborough River.
One researcher found that Joseph Paul joined the Methodist Church .I remember hearing he would not allow his children to learn Spanish nor attend a Catholic Church. One story was told about his leaving Spain in order to avoid becoming a priest. Whether there is any truth to these stories or not, I can't say.
Mary Ann Garrison Robles was shorter than her husband by several inches according to a picture of the two of them standing side by side in the book, Tampa Town. She died from pnemonia on April 19, 1886 and was buried in the Old Robles Cemetary and was later reinterred in Mary Robles Tanner's plot in Woodlawn Cemetary.
Joseph Robles lived on his orange grove property for a time and then with family members until his death on February 12, 1907. He was buried in the Old Robles Cemetary and was later reinterred in Mary Robles Tanners' plot in Woodlawn Cemetary along with his wife, MaryAnn. Joseph Robles died of LaGrippe accornding to his death certificate.
The Robles children included seven sons and three daughters. The eldest son, Michael F. Robles, was born on October 21, 1842 in Ft. Fanning, East Florida District (now Levy County.) He grew up in Florida and enlisted in the Confederate Army sometime after the Civil War began. Michael died in a Union prison in Canton, Ohio and is buried there. According to the Bible records of Joseph Paul Robles, Michael was 22 years, 4 months and 21 days old when he died. Michael never married. I have chosen not to write about the other Robles children at this time because I do not have enough material collected. The Robles, as we know them are primarily a Florida Pioneer family and it has been difficult to gather materials on Florida Pioneers when you live in Oklahoma. Since not many early Oklahoma settlers didn't live in Florida first, the libraries don't have many Florida records. I do intend to get to work on this family and follow them on down to today's generation. I have included descendants as I know them but these records are far from complete.
I have not attempted to learn anything about Joseph Robles' family in Spain. Uncle Bill told me he was in Malaga and decided to look up Robles in the phone book to see if he couldlocate any relatives. The book ws full of Robles so he didn't pursue it any further. Maybe a Spanish speaking descendant will attemt this one.

Can you identify any of the Robles in this Florida State Photo Archives picture? I suspect brothers Joseph P. Go there today and a Hooter's is on the right side and the gambling ship on the left a Port Richey. P.S. I gave the photo to Joan Morris in 1987/88 while living in Tallahassee. CCB in W. TN.
