In Reply to: Mary Ann Marchbanks & James League by Anne Braswell of 38
Mary Ann's father was George Marjoribanks. He was captured by the English in 1715 while fighting in the cause of the Stuart kings and transported the following year to Virginia where he changed the spelling of his name to Marchbanks -- which is the way my own name is pronounced. No records have been found of his ancestry in Scotland but it seems probable he was a member of a Marjoribanks family who presided over the barony of Balbardie, on the present site of the town of Bathgate in Scotland.
I am Honorary Secretary of The Marjoribanks Family and I have a great deal more information about the Marjoribankses and the Marchbankses.
