Hi Christopher,
I'm the youngest daughter of the female half of the twins (Josiah and Josephine) born to Elerzine (Bishop) and W.A. Tanner in 1885 either in Alabama or DeKalb County (Atlanta), Georgia. After I married and moved here my mother used to tell me that she was born in Alabama but my birth certificate says Atlanta so I'm not sure. She did say they went to Texas in a covered wagon when she and Joe were five years old (1890). But hey, you've done a heck of a job in your sleuthing! I admit there are some question marks but what you and Joanna have found has to be on the right track. I never heard her mention any other McKinney brother but Henry, but that doesn't prove there wasn't one. I am almost sure the 1912 date is correct for Henry's death because none of my older sisters (1906,1908, 1910) remembered him and had he died in 1938 they would have. It is possible that Grandma and her family could have been lving in the Atlanta area in 1880 (she would have been 19) which may be the reason she wasn't on the 1880 Alabama soundex, but she should have been on the 1910 Texas one because my parents met and married in Elllis County, Texas (either Forreston or Waxahachie) in 1904 so they had to be living there then.
The Alton McKinney thing puzzles me because my mother stayed very close to her mother (Elerzine) and family until Grandma's death in 1940 and she never mentioned him to me. Also, it is unlikely - but not impossible - that Elerzine and her McKinney family lived in Texas in 1882 then traveled all the way to Alabama in a covered wagon (the standard travel at that time) and then lost her first husband, married her second (Grandpa Tanner) had three other children then traveled back to Texas in a covered wagon in 1890. It would have been a remarkably horrendous two trips. But, like I say, not impossible. My Grandma Tanner was a pretty remarkable woman - tiny but wiry - and very matriarchal. I do remember her well. The info on Henry sounds correct as well if they all did come to Texas in 1890 (he would have been 12) and could have been still living there. You and Joanna seem to really be on track.
Anyway, let me know if I can help any other way.
