Obituary: Gwendolyn T. Platt, a homemaker, died Monday, Oct. 11, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. She was 86.
Mrs. Platt came to Brevard County in 1935 from Mystic, Ga., where she was born.
"She never met a stranger and was well-known locally for parties and her open house on Christmas Eve," said her daughter, Gwenell Lock of Palm Bay. "She sent out 750 Christmas cards every year and these were to friends. She loved to keep in touch."
Mrs. Platt met her late husband, Sidney Platt, at the old Melbourne Hotel, which he managed. "She went to visit her sister, who also worked there. When he saw her for the first time -- which was five minutes later -- he said he'd been hypnotized. She was the prettiest girl he'd seen in Melbourne and he'd been hypnotized since," Ms. Lock said.
The couple had been married for 63 years this year. Mr. Platt died in July.
Mrs. Platt was an original member of the Girls' Friendship Club, founded 59 years ago by herself and some friends.
She was a former precinct supervisor in West Melbourne and a Baptist.
Other survivors include her sons, Robert Platt of San Antonio, Texas, Thomas Owen of Ringold, Ga., James Platt of Melbourne and George Platt of Okeechobee; daughters, Marylin Brooks of Quanah, Texas, Linda Courson of Jacksonville and Dorothy Platt of Palm Bay; sisters, Coretta Brewer of Tifton, Ga., and Hazel Boytis of Melbourne; 27 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brownlie and Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne. Services will be at 2 p.m.
Saturday at the Christian Development Center in Palm Bay. Burial will be at Melbourne Cemetery.
