Hello!
I happened to look up my Tanner line today on the internet and found some information that you had submitted, which had been empty on my pages for at least 20 years! Thank you!!!!!
My grandmother, Dovie Genever Tanner, father was Marion Orestus Tanner, and his father was Thomas Nelson Tanner (And wife, Kitsy Cook) First, I didn't know that Thomas's middle name was Nelson. I only had N...also, I didn't know Kitsy's last name was Cook! I only had Kitsy! Then, I didn't know that Thomas N Tanners father was Silas Tanner. And then, the list of all the spouses and children were all new to me.!!! It was a great find for me!
Since, this had been recorded, did you ever find out who Silas's parents were? Or Elizabeth Lyon's parents?
Do you do genealogy as a hobby, or religious purposes, or are you a professional genaologist as a job?
I guess we are distant related. Who is your line?
Thanks for your time!
Regards,
Jamie

Chris,
Mary Fontaine's husband was a surgeon in the Civil War and was quite a bit older than her. Note that the woman on the extreme right that Mama Tanner said was a sister to C. S. is dressed in black. I suspect it was Mary Fontaine after the death of Dr. Fontaine and the other to be Georgia Weatherford. What was Lecy doing with that hat on? Mother indicated when we looked at this picture several times that she thought the man and woman on the extreme left was Gus and Ola Fontaine. She was not sure. I should have carried this to Denzer Shoemaker to identify--I believe he could have, It was just something I did not get done. Do you have contact with any of the Fontaine or Weatherford lines? Perhaps they could help us with this one if you do.
Also, the picture of C. S. and two other men was taken in a cemetery and they are standing in front of a monument (almost as tall as they are) with an urn to the side). Since this is not one at New Hope and not one I recognize from Holly Pond or Cullman, could it be one from Atlanta where the Fontaine/Weatherford families are buried? Is it perhaps C. S. and brothers from there or C. S. and Warren Weatherford and Thomas Newton? I suspect not on that as Thomas Newton was OLDER that C. S. and these two appear to be younger--but who are they?

Hi Christopher: Just wanted to touch base with you again. I just got back from Alabama. My first trip there in 25 years. I had a great time and attended my first Decoration Day. I have alittle more info that I will send to you soon. One clarification that you might want to make on your site is of family of John DAVIS and Lula TANNER. They had three sons. You need to add Harold Davis as a son;Estella was indeed their daughter. She was married to a RAKESTRAW. Will send more on this. One story that I heard was that Marion Augustus and his son Marion Curtis served a year at Kilby Prison in 1928 for moonshining! Were you aware of this? Apparently when the authorities arrived, Marion Curtis confessed that the still belonged to him. After placing Curt under arrest, Marion Augustus was arrested because the still was on his property. He had 160 acres that was bordered by the Duck River, just outside of Holly Pond. That is true southern genealogy! Their old house is still there with new owners. I was told that Marion Augustus (and maybe other Tanner's) worked on building covered bridges in Alabama. I was told that after the Civil War, Silas and the ones who came to Alabama, brought a steam-powered sawmill with them from Georgia. Was one of the first of it's kind . They first settled in Warrior, along the Warrior River. This would explain WHY they came to Alabama. Must have been plenty of work for a family with a sawmill in Alabama following the war. I have gotten alot of pictures and stories lately. Will send anything that I think would be of interest to you. We are trying to get Puccle Tanner and Ina and some of the others to come to Florida soon. I have spoke with them on the phone. Will let you know if they decide to come. Perhaps you could get together with us. Ina said she remembered meeting you in the cemetary at Holly Pond. Will go for now. Keep in touch. Jan

Hey, Christopher....
Wow! You have been a busy fellow!! The information you have sent is mind-boggling, at the very least. I do have some questions/observations, however.
Re: Gaines Lamar Tanner...the birth information has his dob as 1887 but the SSDI information shows a dob of 1902..a difference of some 15 years. Unlikely he would have fathered a child at 15, but you never know. Family lore, however, has Gaines dying sometime in the mid 40's. Tragic event...murdered his invalid wife and then committed suicide.
Thomas was the 'black sheep' of the family. The last anyone ever heard from Thomas was, again, after the war in the mid 40's. Thomas was married twice, first to a woman named Mayflower or Mayfair, two different versions. They divorced and Thomas married again, to unknown person. The dob of Thomas on the census is VERY close to the SSDI and I wonder if it could possibly be our vagabond Thomas.
Regarding the reference to the 1900 census in Ellis County, TX....my Uncle Bud, Joseph's oldest son, born 1915 or so, says he remembers as a child going with his parents to Ellis County, he thought to a cemetery. He had thought for quite some time that they were visiting his grandparents graves, but since Warren and Ellerzine are buried in Grapevine (Tarrant Co.), there may be some info in Ellis County regarding Ellerzine's parents. Discussions with another cousin (a son of twin Josephine) says there were people by the name of "South" in Ellis county but they were the family of Josephine's husband, Mr. Whitley.
be right back

Good Morning, Christopher.....I am attaching (I hope) a message from dotles2421 (Cousin Dottie, Josie's daughter) in which she tells me about a photo she has of Elerzine & sisters (?).....maybe the names will help find something. Also, I got pictures from Alton (lat1@@airmail.net) and the tombstone for W A Tanner (Warren) shows a date of death of Nov 8, 1913. I have asked Alton to verify this with the original pictures he took.
Looking now at attaching the message from Dottie, I find I can't do that and will just forward the message to you.
You did a lot of work and it will all come together, sometime.
Keep up the good work. I will get to Archives in Montgomery and see if I can find anything to add to this.
Will be in touch.

Hey, Christopher, Bill, Sandy, Dottie, Alton: Please let me know what needs to be researched. I went to the LDS library in Montgomery last Wednesday, just to find them and see how it works. I will be glad to look for whatever you need me to look for. I don't want to duplicate your efforts, but I want to contribute to this enormous effort. Christopher, I recall you saying something about ordering the 1900 census soundex. If you want me to order it, I will be glad to. If there's something else that needs 'huntin', please let me know. Alton, in Fort Worth, is a treasure. He is going to the University of Texas-Arlington library to do research. He also went to the cemetery and got photos of Warren and Ellerzines grave markers.
Let me hear from you and point me in the right direction. Christopher...did you get to Cullman this week? Are there some records at Archives & History in Montgomery I could look for that would help us?
Joanne
