Christopher,
Both my grandmothers were born and raised in Pittsburgh PA and became good friends during their teen years. My grandmother Harriet Matz came down to FL to attend her sister Phyllis’ wedding and met Samuel Clenton Platt at Raulerson’s Grocery store (in Ft. Pierce) where he was working. My other grandmother Anna Kirch married Daniel Simmons and raised their family in Pittsburgh. In 1949 they sold their Pittsburgh farm (the town had built up too much around them) and bought another one about 50 miles west in Ohio.
My grandmothers had kept in touch and had visited each other yearly since the 1930’s. When my parents married my dad and Uncle were partners and they continued to work the Ohio farm. (so my mother ended up in Ohio, I was born there too). In 1972 my Uncle bought out my dad’s share of the farm and we moved down to Florida, almost moved to Vero but ended up in Titusville. (in hindsight I wish it had been Vero)
Jean Alexander is “Vera Belle Platt” one of Samuel M’s children that went into the orphanage in Arcadia when Samuel M and Ola Platt died in the 1918 Flu epidemic. She was always called Jean and never Vera or Belle but I don’t know why. Attached is her obituary. Her orphanage birth year and her age in the obit seem to be off a little too. The orphanage papers have her born July 22, 1914. She would have been 74 in July 1989, according to the obit, so if you subtract 74 from 1989 you end up with 1915.
Both Samuel Clenton and wife Harriet are buried in Titusville (along with other’s from the Harriet’s side), Harriet’s sister Phyllis (mentioned above) lived in Titusville (until her death too) and she had the cemetery plots already bought for the family. After Clenton died Harriet went to Minnesota and stayed with Joyce. She died in Deer River and they brought her back to Titusville to bury too. It’s about 70 miles from Vero to Titusville but about 1500 miles from Deer River to Titusville!
Ralph

Christopher, All the references are in the word document you emailed me. I have gone through and highlighted in bold/red the changes. See attached. As for Thomas Fenton Platt (b. May 3, 1898), he went by the name of Fenton, was the youngest son of Samuel M. Platt. He enlisted May 27th 1917. Was a Corporal (Jan 1918) in the 117 Field Artillery, 31st "Dixie" Division. Arrived France Oct. 26, 1918. Left France Dec. 11, 1918. Discharged from Camp Gordon (Atlanta) Jan 12, 1919. Didn't make it home before his parents died (Dec. 1918). He stayed with some cousins in Dowling Park until his brother Samuel Clenton Platt returned from France (April 1919). Fenton and Clenton soon struck out on their own, leaving their cousin's in Dowling Park and following the Allison's (family of Fenton's girlfriend, Mamie Drew) to Indian River County, FL (c.1919-1920). Working as a barber, Fenton wed Mamie Drew Allison (August 28, 1920) and they settled in Vero Beach (they had two sons; Fenton, named after his father and Allison, named for his mother's maiden name). Fenton died of pneumonia Nov. 27, 1927. Mamie Drew (born July 28, 1900) raised her two sons. Fenton Jr. joined the Marines in WWII but was killed in action in Nov. 1943 at Tarawa in the south pacific. Allison joined the army and was stationed in the Pacific. He married Betty Upson and they had three boys. Allison is currently living near Tampa. (Betty passed away about a year ago) Ralph
