Good to get your message. I do believe I have a connection for you, but I
do not at this time see a connection between our two Burt lines.

First, let me identify the sources I have used to make the possible
connection for you. I have had access to a book by Deedie McIntire. Much to
my chagrin right now, I do not have the title. But, I have it somewhere. In
her book, she suggests that the father of this William Burt you begin with
was probably William Burt, b. 3-27-1736, in Newton Parish, Virginia." This
then would be in Isle of Wight County, VA, and the son of an Elias Burt and
wife Rebecca.

Next, I was in communications with Charles E. Burt, Sr. 743 Goodson Rd.,
Dawsonville, GA in July 1996. He sent me quite a bit of data which I have
entered into my program.

From these sources comes the information that William Burt was born 15 Sep
1771 in SC.

I have done nothing to verify nor confirm the data from either source.

If these do tie together, then the line definitely goes back to the Isle of
Wight County, VA. There, an Elias Burt and wife Rebecca had a son William
born 27 Mar 1736 and a son Elias born 9 Feb 1738. I have absolutely no
additional info on son Elias.

There is, in my mind, a distinct probability that this Elias Burt of Isle
of Wight County is the same one who married Anne Finney in Middlesex Co.,
VA 11 Apr 1726. This one came over from England as an indentured servant.

Sources: Digitized Report # 00951, The Virginia Library, which states
that in about 1719 Elias Burt was indentured to serve Christopher Veal for
a period of 4 years in Virginia. The marriage information is from a
commercial copy of marriages of Virginia.

_IF_ you believe these lines tie together, I will gladly trade data with
you. I use The Master Genealogist as my genealogy program. This program can
read many different data bases without the necessity of going through
GEDCOM.

I look forward to your response.

Sorry about my slowness today. I just don't feel quite up to par.

With the possibility of being too boring, let me step back and provide an
overview. Some of us have identified what we believe to be three different
lines of Burt people with origins in Virginia. There was a Richard Burt the
elder who first married in York County, VA ca 1688. He was a grandfather to
Mathew Burt. Mathew and, as far as I know, all of his children moved to SC
ca 1790. Mathew and most of his children were in Edgefield County although
son John was in, I believe, nearby Abbeville county. But, definitely SC.
And then they spread all over the south. I am of this line. I am descended
from Mathew through his son Robert and my portion of this line then goes
through Wilcox County, AL to Attala and Leake Counties, MS.

Back to Virginia again, there also was a John Burt of Gloucester County, VA
and we have not been able to connect him with Richard. When he left VA, he
first stopped in NC. There is a John Brown who is researching this line.
More on that later.

And, back again in VA, there was, as I mentioned previously, an Elias Burt
who had sons William and Elias. Have no further record of Elias, but
William also went to SC. As mentioned, I have some limited information on
this line.

Hope this overview might help in some orientation.

Then we also have a mailing list:

BURT-SOUTHERN-USA-L@@rootsweb.com

Earlier, I mentioned John Brown. He tends to be the lead researcher in the
John Burt from Gloucester County. Feel free to write him also. Also posting
a message to our mailing list is cordially welcomed.

John's email is: jkbrown@@mindspring.com

Within these lines, there always seems to be a William. And, in the Richard
Burt and John Burt lines, there always seems to be a John. But, we have
never found any specific linkage. John Brown has proposed one but it is a
proposal only.

Now, for Charles Burt. He is descended from
Willimm Burt m Mary Spradling
Reuben T. Burt
James C. Burt
Jay Palmer Burt
Elbert H. Burt and
then Charles.

Back in September, we went to my military reunion, WW II type, in PA and
then dropped down to SC for some research. At the South Caroliniana Library
at U of SC in Columbia, I found a microfilm copy of some research papers
done by Leonardo Andrea, now deceased. I understand these microfilm are
also available through local FHCs.

On page 5 of the Burt papers, I found the following two entries.

23
William BURT of Charleston ... His estate was confiscated due to the fact
that he was a TORY.... 17 Dec 1783...it stated that when Charleston was
occupied by the British that William Burt took Protection from them.... Wm.
Burt proved that he was no Tory and his estate was returned to him....He
places his Revolutionary record to prove he was no Tory and served the
American Cause.

23-a
WILLIAM BURT... His account for supplies furnished and also for his
service in the American Navy as Commander of the Schooner Nancy...His
service as Commander of the Nancy was certified by Maj. Cochran and Robert
Bruce...William Burt paid out of his own funds 1000 Lbs for the Nancy from
Miss Molly Darling who owned the boat by her inheritance...William Burt
also states he was Clerk of the S.C. Navy from 1 March 1779 to 1 April
1780....He also placed several bills of supplies and swore to one bill 1
Oct. 1783 before William Mason J.P.... He swore to the other bill 18 May
1786 before Daniel Smith J.P....After the Tory mess was cleared up, WILLIAM
BURT was allowed payment for his services and for his supplies and an
Indent was issued for the same...Edward Blake and Josiah Smith both
certified as to his claims as being true and just and unpaid....WILLIAM
BURT after he got his affairs straight and his indents were issued, wrote
an order to WALTER HALL to receice (sic) for him his indents... The indent
interest payments were endorsed at various times by:
George James Felix Worley of Orangeburg Dist.
John Loviday William Freeman
Charles Hart John Calvert
This ends the file of the unjustly accused Tory.

And about that Deedie McIntire book, I have to do some more research. <G>
Can't find the info right now. But will be back in touch. But, I doubt it
is still for sale.

I go to the Dr. tomorrow morning about the recent arthroscopic surgery on
my left knee. Don't know now just when I will get the GEDCOM made but will
do so and send.

Regards.

I found the info about the McIntire book.

It was privately published. In 1997, her address was:
516 E. College
Sonora, TX 76950
(918) 387-5949

I have copies of some 40+ pages and will be glad to copy and send, if you
so desire.

I borrowed a copy of the book through Interlibrary loan and made the
copies. The book is on legal paper, bound with those plastic coils. I do
not remember where the local library found a copy, perhaps the Dallas, TX
Public Library, but certainly am not sure.

I OCR'd the first page of the chapter pertaining to William Burt and Mary

I do feel better today, but not "out of the woods," so to speak.

Chapter XIII

25. WILLIAM BURT, SR. 26. MARY SPRADLING

William Burt, Sr. was b. 9—15—1771, in South Carolina. His
father was probably William Burt, b. 3—27—1736, in Newton Parish,
Virginia,* who was in South Carolina, as a clerk with the Naval
Commission, during the Revolutionary War.

William Burt, Sr. married twice. His first wife was Mary Spradling, b.
2—9—1778, in Georgia or SC. Mary was probably a daughter of Charles
Spradling, who lived in Charleston District, SC, and in Camden District,
SC, where his Will has purportedly been located, (Will Book A — 1,
210___65,2294(?), dated ? ).

The established children of William Burt, Sr. and Mary Spradling
are: William, Jr., James Jefferson and Reuben Thornton (Chapter
IX). (Additional information is given at the conclusion of this
chapter). William Burt, Sr. and all of his sons were farmers.

The name of William Burt appears in Georgia records as early as
1805, in Franklin Co., (a land draw). He is enumerated in the
1820 and 1830 censuses for Habersham Co., GA. On Feb. 12, 1822,
he was purportedly involved in land purchases in Franklin and
Habersham Counties. He drew for land in the 1827 Land Lotteries
in Carroll and Habersham Counties, Georgia.

Mary Spradling died on March 10, 1838, at the age of sixty, and
was buried in Habersham Co., GA, (present day Lumpkin Co.).

On June 12, 1841, the Bethel Baptist Church in Dawson Co., GA was
constituted, (in what was then Lumpkin Co.). William Burt, Sr.
was listed as a member of the organizing presbytery.

On March 29, 1850, William Burt, Sr. married his second wife,
Milly Glaze, who was born 1793, in North or South Carolina.
William was almost seventy—nine years of age. Milly was fifty—seven. They
were enumerated on the U. S. Population Census for 1850, Lumpkin Co., GA,
in the Ammicalola District, (p. 22, dwelling 1120; Win. Burt, Jr. was in
dwelling #19). An eight year old boy, Torrence Gilstrap (relationship
unknown) was residing with them.

William Burt, Sr. died on June 2, 1852, at the age of eighty. He
was purportedly buried in neighboring Dawson Co., GA.

Following is an excerpt from the Probate Record for the estate of
William Burt, Sr., (Book ?, pg’s 203 and 204):
Georgia )[SIC]
Lumpkin County) Know all men by these presents that we James
J. Burt and R. T. Burt, principles, and Joseph Hitt and Jasper
Smith security, — are held and firmly bound unto James P.
Lawhon (?), ordinary of said county, ...in the just and full sum
of One Hundred and fifty Dollars, .. .sealed with our seals, and
dated this 5th day of July, 1852.
The condition of the above obligation is such that if the
above bound James J. Burt and R. T. Burt, administrators of the
goods, chattels, and credits of William Burt, late of this county
deceased, do make a time(ly) and perfect inventory of all and
singular goods, chattels and credit of the said deceased, which have or
shall come to the hands, possession, or knowledge of the said James J. Burt
and Reuben Burt, . .and if it shall hereafter
appear that any last Will and Testament was made by the said
deceased, and the same be assured before the court, and the executors
obtain a certificate of the probate there of, and the said James J. and
Reuben T. Burt do deliver up the said letters of administration.

* Elias Burt and his wife. Rebecca. recorded the births of their
two sons in the Newton Parish, Virginia records, namely, William, b.
3-27-1736, and Elias, b. 2-4-1737.

Hi,
I found your pedegree on Ancestery World Tree. I was interested in your chart. I descend from Oliver S. Burt, and his second eldest son, Singleton Burt.

I have found Oliver S., and his family in Habersham Co., GA. It is possible that William Burt is the father of my ancestor but I haven't yet been able to prove it yet.

I would love to hear from you about this family.
Thanks for your time

Hi Christopher,
Thank you so much for responder to my e-mail. I am just starting to try to find out information about my Burt family in Habersham County, Georgia. This is all a new area for me. Some of the information that I have collected so far go like this:

Oliver S. Burt was found on the 1830-1850 Habersham County census. He married Frances (maiden name unknown). They had the following children: F.M., Singleton S. (my line), Clairessa J., either W.H or N.A (had a lot of trouble reading these intials), Jacob, Joseph Lewis, Moses A., and John M.
All children were born in Georgia except for Moses, and John, they were born in Arkansas.
I have lost track of F. M. Burt, the last that I've seen of him was on the 1850 census in Habersham Co. census.

Oliver, Frances, and their family was found on the 1860 census living in Spadra Twsp., Johnson Co., AR. This is the last that I've found of them. On the 1870 census, Moses, and John were found in the home of their elder brother, Singleton.

I have been trying to locate the Loyalty Oaths that Southerners had to sign after (1867?)the end of the Civil War but I haven't had any luck at this time. I thought that maybe if I could find that, then see if they were listed in the records or not. This may help narrow down the time of death for Oliver, and his wife.

Singleton died (1884-1897) in Johnson Co., AR. He is supposed to be buried in an unmarked grave at The Old Soldier's Cemetery (Oakland Cemetery) in Clarksville, AR. I haven't been able to find a record of this any where. This information came down from family by the way of my Uncle John. Singleton S. Burt's name hold a key but I haven't been able to find the lock that it opens.

This would be so great if we could connect my Oliver to this family. If you are interested, I can send you more complete information that I have found to this point. I have found Twyla Sue who descends from Moses A. Burt. She lives in Arkansas, and Dian Burt whose husband descends from Reuben Thornton Burt, they live in Georgia.

I would love some feedback from you. Does any of this sound like anything that you have on Oliver? Also, let me know if you would like me to send you the additional information.

Until later
