Subject: Thomas Tanner, father to Silas and Joel, et al
Chris,
At last I feel like I have a link and am really on to something! I'm 95œertain I know who Thomas' parents were and 80:ertain we will be able to prove it. I am in the process of contacting several with records of the Tanner family in VA/SC to see if they have any information that will help or can show me proof why the Thomas Tanner in question would NOT be the one in GA. If this proves correct, he was in GA with the majority of his brothers and sisters! When I located info on them, it ALL began to fit together. BTW, I'm pretty sure the Elizabeth Jones Tanner that married Alfred J. Grimmett on Nov 4, 1837 was a sister to Silas B. and Joel J. I would not be surprised to find Elizabeth (widow) living with her and Alfred after things were settled ca 1840-41-42. I strongly suspect Thomas and Elizabeth were both buried in Butts County. I think the draw from DeKalb Co. for Thomas was through Silas and Joel and that Thomas and Elizabeth never really moved there-only Elizabeth after he died ca 1838.
Also, I found that Silas was a private in Cherokee War of 1838-hum-didn't know he was a veteran. Could it be that Thomas was also and that is where we lost him? I'm not very familiar with that-I thought it was just the moving of the Cherokee out of GA to OK-were there any real conflicts then-if so, is there a list of people killed?

Dear Chris: I had a job where I traveled all the time but no longer do
that so I am just now getting around to answering mail. I got your
message re: Joseph Raper possibly being Caroline's brother. I have
info on him and also believe he is her brother but can't prove it
either. He was born 1797 in SC and married Mahaly Box on 6/1823 or
1824. His middle name was Thomas. Can't tell you where I got this info
from (dummy me). I really believe in my heart that their last name was
either Roper or changed from Raper because a Joseph Roper is mentioned
twice on page 189 of the Carroll Co., GA Deed Book dated Jan. 1854 and
also on page 209 of same book mentions Edward A. Roper and Lewis J.
Roper, J.P., Sept. 1854. I also have a note here where a William F.
Roper was on the 1840 Census, M704 - Roll 38, page 16 but not on 1830 or
1850 Census.
Let me know what you think of this. Hope to see you at Family Reunion
in August.

Subject: Gilley-Raper genealogy information
Dear Betty and Christopher- I just found your query on a Gilley genealogy site. I am researching John M Gilley, son of William Bailes Gilley, and would like to know if anyone answered your request for information about Caroline Matilda Raper of Tennessee. This sounds like an intriguing story (the two sisters marrying the brothers) and would like to know more. Where in Tennessee were they from? Do you have any info on their parents etc.? Thanks in advance for your help! Jen Williams Dragon PS: Do you have any information about William Bailes Gilley? Was he a landowner? Do you know where I could find a will? Was he (yikes!) a slaveowner? PPS: I am related by marriage to this family descending from the daughter of John M. Gilley, Georgia Lula Gilley, who married Oliver Daniels in 1884, and had Ethel Velma Daniel (still alive at almost 90 years!)
