The John Day Family of Porterdale

John Day Sr. was very well known and appreciated by all Porterdale residents.  He was responsible for the beautification of Porterdale. He supervised the installation and maintenance of all public grounds in Porterdale. At left is a picture (Cir. 1946) of John with a Pineapple that he grew in the Porterdale greenhouse. Yes, pineapple will grow in Porterdale. His son, John, remembers eating this pineapple and says that it was delicious. As one drove through Porterdale you could enjoy the results of John and his crews work.  All of the flowers and shrubbery planted along the road and around the Welaunee Hotel, Teachers Cottage, and other common areas contributed to a wonderful and clean environment that surrounded Porterdale.  During the World War II he made available "Victory Garden Plots" along the river for those who wanted to use the cannery.
At left is Margie, known to all as Marge, Day.  She was John Day's wife and just as well known and loved by all Porterdale residents as he was. Marge was involved with the management of the Welaunee Hotel at some time during the 1930-40's. She also managed the Porterdale lunchroom for a good part of the World War II years. I am sure all the kids attending the Porterdale schools will remember Margie Day, she would always be walking the serving line to make sure proper service was being provided.

John and Marge's only son John, at left (photo cir.1946) was very involved in building model airplanes. He spent many hours pursuing his hobby. John shares his memories of Porterdale with us by clicking HERE.

The John Day Family lived in the first house on the right as you crossed the bridge heading South.
