In 1915 Mattie Bell (Head) Hodges was working the Porterdale Mill along with her brother, Paschal (Tobb) Head, she was 14 and he was 15, and they worked and never finished no farther than 6th grade.  They rented a room at the Porterdale hotel, the one that burned down (South Broad), right across from the Porter House. She supported her sisters Annie Mae and Nellie Mae could finish school and graduate (Annie Mae Graduated in 1929).  These sisters all played soft ball for the Porterdale women's softball team. Many people in those days would go watch the team play just to watch the "Head" sisters play ball, quiet popular for their time.
