Porterdale Mill on the Yellow

It
all begins one cold winter night or should I say early morning January
24, 1943 at 2:15 am. In the little milltown of Porterdale, Georgia. A
baby boy 21 inches long and weighing 8 lb. 14 oz. was born in the
Porterdale Clinic on Poplar Street. Yes it was me Joe Lanier Norwood.
Doctor J. B. Mitchell was there to help my mother “Gordie Mae "Burch"
Norwood” with the delivery. Mother and I had a lot of good nurses to
care for us like Mrs. Meadows, Miss Ruby Ellis, Mrs. Woneac, (can't make
out the spelling of her name see scan below), Mrs. Sherwood and Mrs.
Ball. Below you will see a few pictures of my baby book. I am guessing
the Clinic gave it to mother for me because in the front cover is a
piece of tape like used in hospitals back then with "Baby Boy Norwood"
written on it. How many people 65 years old still have there baby book? I
don’t know if Doc. had a cigar in his mouth or not, but just about
every time I saw him out of his office he did. He has been to our house
lots of times with his little black bag, and it always had a needle and
a bottle of penicillin in it. That stuff was good for everything I
guess. |
