The Spelling of Voegeli

(Note: OE is used here instead of the umlaut-o since not all computers display it correctly.)

The umlaut-o only gets introduced in two instances: Plural and Diminuitive. Variations can occur due to time period or local dialect:

Englishthe birdthe birdsthe birdiethe birdies
Standard Germander Vogeldie Voegeldas Voegelchen
or das Voegelein
die Voegelchen
or die Voegelein
Very old German""das Voegelindie Voegelin
Swiss German""das Voegelidie Voegeli
Franconian* German""das Voegeledie Voegele

*Franconia: A large area for which the geographical center would very roughly be Heidelberg.

Comment seen on an Internet Mailing List: "I vaguely remember several school buddies named VOEGELE, who pronounced their name 'Vaguely' so FEGLEY is no stretch."

...which inspired this limerick:
My ancestor's name was spelled Voegeli,
but in America it got changed to Fegley.
It was done by a clerk over here (what a jerk),
now the connection is known only vaguely.
