Letters From The Battlefield (Cont.) Moses Garretson
Headquarters 1st Brigade 3rd Division 10th Corps Miss Maggie Blackburn Your vary interesting letter of May 16th came safe to hand last evening and also one Dated April 16th with your Picture in it you may rest assured that I was glad to get them but my time for answering them will in all probability be vary short owing to us being close to the Enemy we are now camping in sight of the Enemies Pickets and are fighting almost Daily I just returned from the advance Pickets last evening which place we had been for forty eight hours part of the time being under a pretty hard fire of Shell and Musketry we did not though lose a man of our Company During them forty eight hours though the REebs charged on us once I can hardly how we escaped unhurt the Rebs I believe own to a loss of from three to five hundred that charge while our loss of our Regt was I believe but one man killed and two slightly wounded we are expecting every minute to be engaged in a Battle again though it may be a few days I tell you there is not so much fun about fighting but it appears it must be done so for me getting a furlow to come home I can not now Probably if I live till the winter I can at least I will try I would like vary well to come to see you at any time but circumstances wont admit I think we could Spend a couple of hours in talking together you wanted to know who that last Photograph was in the Album I have forgot what I just in last if it is one with too stripes on his arm it is William Amick if it the one setting down with his pants in his Boots it is William Beltz I have not yet hear any thing of Solomon H Miller yet I tell you our company don’t look like it did when we were at home most of us have bee Marching and fighting most of the time for over two weeks we are pretty near tired out I have been with the Company all the time taking part in all the engagements we do I hardly get any Sleep iscept what we get while lying under fire of The Rebel Cannon in our Breast Work I hope that the war will not last too long anymore I wrote you a letter on the 17th of this month we had one fignt since then with the Enemy I gave you a full detail of who is missing in our company in that letter I think if I did not I will in my next letter if you let me know I am well at present hoping if these few lines ever reaches yur lovely hand it may find you enjoying the best of health I am still in hopes that the war will over till June I think if it is and I live to keep my health that we can then spend some pleasant times together if nothing happens either of us I intend sending you sergent Abe Darrs Photograph you can put it in the Albun if you chose I want to get every mans photograph in the Company if I can and I will send them to you to take care of if you will and it should so happen that I never get home you can do what you pleas with them I had intended Sending you a peace of verse that I composed while in South Carolina but I fear my letter will be to large I must now close hoping to hear from you soon Pleas excuse bad writing and spelling and poor composition write soon and often I remain vary affectionately your Friend Until Death Moses R Garretson Direct your letters thus
