   General Notes:

HAROLD LE FEVRE STEELE
By Melda Barker Steele and Wanda S. Cox

Harold was small of stature and complexioned like his mother with dark hair. He was very quick in his movements. As young boys, Harold and Doyle used to catch wild horses on the desert and then break them to ride. They would blind the horse and put a strap around his body just behind the front legs to hold onto. They would lead the horse up alongside the fence, and then one of hem would quickly slip on and ride until they were thrown or the horse stopped bucking. Doyle seldom made it to the horse’s back, but Harold was on before the horse knew what was going on. He was fleet on foot and won many races. Fay used to give him a close run. He had a happy disposition and everyone loved to be around him.

He married Melda Barker May 27, 1917 at Fillmore Utah. Their first child, a daughter, Ada, was born while her father was serving in the Armed Forces in France during World War I. He then returned to his home in Sutherland, Utah where his three sons, Harold, Ralph and Larry, were born. He was a successful farmer and cattle raiser. He was a member of the LDS Church and always paid his tithing and fast offerings. He was a devoted husband and loved his little children very much.

His children were all under five years of age when he was accidentally killed while hauling grain out of the field ast Sutherland on August 27, 1923. The wagon on which he was riding went through a ditch, and the grain slipped forward and Harold fell down between the horses and was run over by the wagon. He died before he could be taken to a doctor. He has twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
