Glimpes of reunions of the Karns families of Kansas
For the better part of the twentieth century, beginning in 1914, the Kansas families of Alva and Hiram Karns held a family reunion in various locations, usually toward the end of August. For many of those years the reunion was held on the third Saturday or Sunday of August in Dodge City, Kansas. For several of those years, Verna Karns, wife of Elmer Karns, kept clippings of the newspaper accounts of the reunions. These clippings give us a glimpse of the strong bonds between these two family groups, as well as valuable records of the names of family members. Verna's records end in 1978, the last year she attended just a month before her death on 24 Aug 1978. In later years, with the deaths of all of the children of Alva and Hiram, the reunions tended to center on the Carlin descendants of Hattie, Hiram's daughter and her husband William Dwight Carlin.
