John L. Ladd of Grant County, Wisconsin, the earliest documented ancestor of our Ladd family line
John L. Ladd is the earliest proved ancestor of our branch of the Ladd family. His wife's given name was Rachel; her surname is not known yet. He was the father of Charles Henry Ladd, but there is some question whether he was the natural or adoptive father. He lived in Grant County, Wisconsin, where he bought land in 1858. The census listed him as age 42 in 1860, born in New York, which would mean a birth date about 1818. We have no record of him after 1860, and Rachel was living with other families at the time of the 1870 census.
