The long struggle of Jacob and Susana Haviland for a veteran's pension
Jacob Haviland served in the Union Army from Aug 1862 to 14 June 1865. He was wounded on 25 Nov 1863 at Mipion Ridge, Tennessee. He and Susannah Stilwell were married about 1966. In 1872 he was granted a disability pension of $4 per month. After much effort, this was increased to $6 per month in 1879. Despite his appeals, it remained at that level until his death on 19 Nov 1893. Susana (the spelling she then preferred) began requesting a pension for herself the next month. We do not know the outcome of her requests. We are endebted to a Haviland researcher, Kay Staub of Alabama, for this information. In Oct 2007 she sent us the documentation of her search for all his pension records. From that vast material I have pieced together the main outlines of their long-continuing struggle depicted here. It is included to reflect the long duration of their struggle and to provide a glimpse of what life was like for this family, especially the widow, in the late 19th century.
