Unidentified portraits by E. V. Mote brought to Oklahoma by the Stillwell family
William Henry Stillwell's first wife, Phebe Hiller, had a half-sister, Amanda Hayes, who married Elijah V. Mote. After Phebe's father died her mother Martha married Alexander Hayes. Surely E. V. Mote must have been a talented and busy man, for he is reported to have been both a physician and a teacher as well as operating photographic studios in Greenville, Ohio and Union City, Indiana. The pictures included here were in a packet kept by Bonnie (Stillwell) Ladd, granddaughter of William Henry and Phebe. They had been brought with the family through the moves from Ohio to Kansas, to Missouri, and finally to Oklahoma. Two pictures have been removed from this collection. They are portraits of Susannah and Hannah, both sisters of William Henry. Almost certainly other family members are included here, but we cannot identify them. Perhaps other family members or researchers will spot a picture they recognize and can identify.
