Ohio land survery were a hodge-podge of differing systems of laying out the land. One system was used in the Virginia Military District and another system in the Congressional Military Tract. Some survey plans had to be cancelled because of Indian attacks. Large tracts of land were sold to private developers, who used their own system of surveying, some of which corresponds to the 6 x 6 mile tracts which have become the traditional layout of townships.
