Welcome to Västervik!
Västervik is a charming old maritime town along the east coast of Småland. The country´s most beautiful archipelago, with its thousands of islands, islets and skerries are located here. During the summer, street life flourishes with large numbers of people strolling along the promenade or sitting and enjoying their meals at one of the many outdoor restaurants by the inner harbour. But the typical Swedish peacefulness can also be found here. It´s not difficult to find a spot on the beach or in the woods further inland. Västervik provides many opportunities for fishing, canoeing and hiking in the diverse outdoors.
Archipelago
Sweden´s most beautiful archipelago is in Västervik. Together, the more than 5,000 islands represent all the different types of the archipelago. From the wooden islands closer to the land to the beautiful, barren, flat rocks in the outer archipelago. Accessibility is an advantage. It´s easy to go out into the archipelago, even if you don´t have your own boat. Several boat tours in Västervik and Loftahammar go to the archipelago and stop at tourist areas on Hasselö and Idö Lotsplats. There is also the sea for those who decide to walk, bike ride or drive to find their own little place or by some sea cove.
Västervik´s archipelago is, to a great degree, alive with many archipelago residents who have committed themselves to small scale tourism. Hasselö is a unique island in the heart of the archipelago. It becomes alive during the summer with its sandy beaches and rock swimming. The tourist boat Freden comes daily during peak season. There is also a youth hostel on the island.
Idö Lotsplats is a cultural treasure that had its premier opening in the summer of year 2000. Boat rides from the mainland make Idö easily accessible to everyone. You can also spend the night in one of the cottages.
Outside the approach to Västervik lies Spårö, a place mentioned in 13th century reports on sailing. In 1680 one of many archipelago beacons was erected here consisting of 26.5 yards high tree-trunks clad with pine shrubbery and ready to be lit. The final Spårö beacon was built in 1776 and has become something of a symbol for Västervik´s archipelago.
Loftahammar, in the northern part of the archipelago, is a small village that flourishes during the summer. There are many excellent places for swimming and numerous types of overnight accommodations. Källvik is an old spa with picturesque wooden houses. In Blankaholm, in the southern part of the archipelago, there is camping, swimming and an inn.

Family legend has it that after being beaten by his father at the age of 12, Andrew ran away from home in Sweden and became a sailor. In 1874 he arrived in New York. He must have moved on west very soon since he married his wife, Susan COFFMAN in 1874 in the Hamilton Co., NE area. They were in Nebraska, according to birth records, for the birth of their first nine children [1876-1892] after which they appear in the Logan Co., OK area where the two last children were born [1894-1896]. However, there is some question about the location of the family in the late 1800s, since the Declaration of Intention for Citizenship was filed in Aurora, Hamilton Co., NE in 1899, and Andrew became a citizen of the USA in Hamilton Co., NE on January 20, 1905.

Mary was born on Thanksgiving Day. Her parents, Andrew Gustas Anderson and Susan Emily (Coffman) Anderson moved from Bluffton, IN to Central City, NE before the birth of their first child in 1876. On Nov. 27, 1892, they moved to Guthrie, OK, remaining there until 1897 when they moved to Perkins, OK. They later lived near Agra, OK.

A STORY ABOUT GRANDMA'S APRON
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls. In the fall the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.

Sheldon J. Anderson, long time Cushing resident, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2006 at Linwood Village in Cushing at the age of 82 years of age after a long illness.
The son of the late Oscar and Elsie Anderson, Sheldon was born on July 9, 1923 in Parkland, Oklahoma. He was the last remaining child of this couple’s six children. Sheldon has lived in Cushing since returning from serving in the army during WWII. His work in concrete and brick masonry was well respected by all who knew and worked with him over the years. He had a passion for gardening and for his prize winning pecans.
He will be forever loved and deeply missed by family and friends. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife Christine of almost 60 wonderful years; two devoted daughters, Joyce Anderson and her husband Tom Runnels of Orlando, Florida and Kathy Sanders and her husband Russ of Danville, California; one grandson, Brian Sanders of Stillwater; other relatives and friends.
Friends are invited to attend the service to remember this special man at the First Church of God, 501 N. Noble in Cushing on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Kevin Clouse officiating.
Burial will follow in the Parkland Cemetery.
