HOW TO READ AND INTERPRET THESE GENEALOGICAL DESCENDANTS REPORTS The reports follow a family generation by generation. A centered heading identifies each generation by number. The report starts with the first generation selected for the report and proceeds to the most recent descendants selected for the report, moving forward in time. Each person is assigned a unique ID number that remains with him or her throughout the report. It appears to the left of the name. (This is an Arabic numeral, not the small Roman numeral that shows the sequence of children in a family.) For an adult with a family, the ID number is followed by a period,
for example, 11. If the ID number is preceded by a + sign, it means that you will see more information about that person and family in the next generation. If there is no + sign then you'll not find any additional information about that person in later generations. Please note that women are always referred to by their maiden surname. To help you understand which family each person belongs with, each descendant's name is followed by the names of his or her ancestors, enclosed in parentheses. You can immediately see who a parent is, then a grandparent, etc. Following the given name of the first child in a family you will see a small superscript number that tells which generation this person and his or her siblings are in. Here are some other quirks that may appear because of the way our computer program works: Extra commas may appear where a town or county is not specified, for example, "Born , , Ohio" or "Born , Darke Co., Ohio." Sometimes a superscript reference number may be shown twice, one right after the other. Please ignore the repetition. Our report generator automatically inserts the word UNKNOWN when a item of information is left unfilled. This UNKNOWN simply means we did not have the information, not necessarily that no one knows. You may see UNKNOWN where a first or last name is missing. You may also see UNKNOWN in a burial record, even though the cemetery is stated. In that case, the UNKNOWN means we have no record of the date of burial, even though the place is known. The word PRIVATE means this person is still alive or, even though he or she may be deceased, no death date is recorded. So, until a person would be about 100 years old, if no death date is given then the personal information about that individual is withheld. This is a matter of privacy protection for living persons, a caution commonly used in genealogical records. If you need more information about a living person, please contact one of us directly by e-mail. If you have questions about reading these reports, please send an e-mail to Forrest or Jean and we will help you.
