This is a compilation of secondary sources useful for a study of the Stillwell family. Its bases are primarily the work of Forrest Ladd, Chris Stillwell, and Cindy Torres Owens. Other contributors are identified with the entry. I ask forgiveness for any whose work I have not properly credited.

Bergen draws heavily from the work of Benjamin Marshall Stilwell, thus incorporating both the strengths and weaknesses of that work.)

LC CS71.B805 1910(A narrative account with many colorful stories but little or no documentation. He writes that he uses Benjamin Marshall Stillwell’s work as a source, but is aware that John E. Stillwell is critical of it, and acknowledges that further research may show some of his assertions not to be true. I have a photocopy of a few pages from this work. Bradhurst lived from 1865 to 1923. The name Augustus usually is abbreviated to A.)

Stillwell says this book is full of errors, many of which are based on interesting data from persons hoping to profit from estates which Attorney Marshall represented. In particular, the stories of separated brothers adopting a code name of Still Well, the notion of the early family name of Cooke in England, the view that the first wife of Nicholas was Abigail Hopton are denied by John E. Stillwell. Much of the popular material, including the LDS records, seems to be based on the work of B. M. Stilwell.)
