5. ISOM MARTIN2 DAWSON (MARTIN H.1) was born February 27, 1863 in Black Jack Grove, Hopkins Co., TX [named changed to Cumby, TX]8, and died February 3, 1936 in Ford, Ford Co., KS. He married ALFRETTA "Allie" MARIAH CANNADY October 5, 1884 in Sarcoxie, Jasper Co., MO9, daughter of CHARLES CANNADY and ROSE RAGAN. She was born June 15, 1865 in Mascoutah, St. Clair Co., IL10, and died April 28, 1945 in Ford, Ford Co., KS.10.

Notes for ISOM MARTIN DAWSON:
I. M. [as he was known] was born in Black Jack Grove, TX on February 27, 1863. This is sometimes also known as Black Jack, TX. The area was a good farming community, but very small. It had a church, a school, and a little store or two, but no post office. This location is now known by and shown on a current road may as Cumby, Hopkins Co., TX. [On a visit to Cumby in 1999, we noted that one of the retail stores still had the name on the window -- Black Jack Grove. JKL]

Later the family moved to the Sarcoxie, Jasper Co, MO area, where the Charles W. Cannady and Harriman families also lived. Isom Martin and Alfretta grew up in this rural community and were married there on Oct. 5, 1884. Six children were born in MO. The Cannady family (Allie's parents) had moved to the Great Bend, KS area, and because of their advice and hoping for better success in a financial way the I. M. Dawson family started to Kansas by covered wagons drawn by four fine, husky mules on July 28, 1899. Alfretta had come earlier by train because a new baby was expected soon. She was disappointed because she wanted to make the trip with the family, and she greatly enjoyed travelling. Lillie became ill with malaria fever on the road, so I. M. had to load the family on a train to reach proper medical help. The family possessions were left with the John Denny family and Mr. Tom Boucher, who also were coming to Kansas to make their home.

The I. M. Dawson family moved to a farm in Stafford Co., KS. Farming methods, as well as implements were very different there. There was homesickness, lack of finances, and I. M. was especially discouraged and would have returned to MO if he could have financed the move with his family. The children were taught to work and helped harvest a fair crop of wheat the next year. The older children husked corn for neighbors the first two winters to help carry the financial burden of pioneer days. Cow chips were used for part of the fuel to keep the family warm.

Three different farms were "home" during the five years in Stafford and Barton county where three children were born. After five years, I. M. had accumulated horses, mules, cows, machinery and money enough to make a payment on land. So with a land agent he moved further west to Ford County where he bought three quarters of land which later became known as the "Dawson Place." (Located about 3 miles north of Ford, Ford Co., KS on the Spearville Road). A four room square house was built on his land. The same house was later extensively remodeled by Verna and Elmer Karns in the 1940's.

After the home was ready, the family again loaded into covered wagons pulled by teams and started west, driving their cattle with them. In a raging snow storm, they arrived on Dec. 2, 1904. Neighbors D.O. Rinehart and Frank Cook were keeping a fire expecting the new neighbors to arrive.

The following spring, Lillie was married to W. P. Warner of St. John and returned to live in the same house where the parents and brothers and sisters had previously lived. Only one of the children, the 10th, who was Clarice, was born in Ford County in 1907. Some of the childhood memories of the farm were the harvest crews of header barges, many horses and several men; the huge dinners for the threshers; the mile and one-half walk to and from the rural school; the sand storms pelting the children on the road; the rural Sunday School where the minister, Rev. Ballinger, looked like Abraham Lincoln.

Later, in 1912 the family moved from the farm setting to the town of Ford, Kansas. Memories of adjusting to the town school, the Saturday afternoon visits to town, and later, Saturday night in the little town, are vivid. Ford was a small rural town--perhaps never having more than 250 population at any time. The family home was located in the Southwest corner of the town. The three youngest children each graduated from the High School at Ford, and later had some teaching experience.

After I. M.'s death in 1938, Alfretta moved to a smaller home closer to church and downtown. She lived there until her death in 1945.
-Excerpts from notes of Verna Dawson Karns

Memories of my grandfather, I.M. Dawson, are of his tall, straight form, with beautiful white hair as he was seen often walking back and forth from the family home to the downtown area of Ford. He seemed also to enjoy teasing the grandchildren as they played at his home.

Most of the children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren lived in that nearby area during all of their years in Ford County.

Isom Martin Dawson and "Allie" Cannady Dawson both are buried in the family plot about a mile east of the town of Ford, Ford Co., KS. [JL]

* * *
By other grandchildren, Isom is remembered for his playful tickling when the young ones "dashed" past him in his living room, for the peppermints he carried to be passed out.

Others remember his cheering and hollering at basketball games along with neighbor Bill Heiland, and his V/8 with the hand-throttle installed, as he drove into the surrounding farmlands to survey his land where many of the family lived.

Others remember his stately stance and his black suit as he daily walked down the sidewalk from his home, crossed the railroad tracks, and passed by the grade school on his way downtown to pick up the mail, and spend some time exchanging the time of day and news with friends in this small friendly town.

On the serious side, during those dust-bowl, depression years he gave $3.00 for the old-fashioned meeting. It is still remembered as being generous! With his glasses pushed up on his head, he could be heard above the rest of the congregation singing his favorite song, "He Brought Me Out."

Notes for ALFRETTA "Allie" MARIAH CANNADY:
Alfretta, my grandmother, in her later years, would sit in her favorite rocker where she could see out the window and watch the activities of the small town as they came into view. The rocker always seemed to be placed too close for comfort to the china cabinet with curved glass front and sides. It seemed to survive the potential hazards of the many grandchildren who visited her. She is remembered by many of her grandchildren for the "big" sugar cookies which were always waiting in the cookie jar for some hungry child, and also for the butterscotch candies [round and hard like a quarter] which were always there.

While my daughter, Gwen Ladd Hackler, is too young to have known her great-grandparents, the I. M. Dawsons, she and her husband, Don Hackler, now enjoy in their home the antique bedroom furniture which furnished the front bedroom of the Dawson's last home in Ford, Ford Co., KS.
--Excerpts from Jean Karns Ladd

Isom Martin Dawson and "Allie" Cannady Dawson both are buried in the family plot about a mile east of Ford, Ford Co, KS. Allie's funeral was conducted by Rev. August Brandes, the first pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Ford, Ford Co., KS.

******* Some of the grandchildren's memories of Grandma "Allie" are the big cookie jar always full of sugar cookies. It must have taken dozens and dozens for her many grandchildren who visited her as they dropped in and out--perhaps for a cookies. Always present also was the dish of flat round butterscotch candies just waiting for someone to stop by for a treat!

Grandmother was a quiet, meek little lady who had seen a lot of years and many hardships with her ten children who all lived to be adults. That was quite an accomplishment in the days before antibiotics, plastics, nylons, wash and wear fabrics, automatic washers and dryers! In the last 10 or 15 years of her life she spent much "well-earned" time sitting in her favorite rocking chair (which was always too close to "that" curved glass china cabinet) looking out the window watching the activities of the little town where she had lived so long. She had an excellent view of the highway coming through the center of town, and of the school children walking to and from the schools.

She was always active in the Missionary Society of the Nazarene Church. She served as their treasurer for many years and the money, though often small, was carried in a well recognized little coin purse.

With her hair brushed back to a bun, and dressed in the same style dress almost all of the time, she kept an orderly home. After she was free to be gone, she loved to travel whenever someone was going and had some space, or to board a bus on her way to MO or CO to visit family and friends. These were well-earned vacations!

After reviewing the list of my ancestors, I settled on William Thornberry for my in-depth study. I chose my great-great grandfather because of his interesting life. He lived a successful life despite a disabling accident.

William was the first of ten children born to Andrew (better known as Sam) and Mahala Thornberry. He was born in 1880, and was the older brother of Charles, Viola, Rosa, Bessie, Myrtle, Marshall, Lenora, Hazel, and Lawrence. At that time the family lived in a small town in Kansas, where Sam

WARNER March 15, 1905 in Ford, Ford Co., KS. He was born August 26, 1881 in Patriot, IN, and died December 14, 1963 in Larned, KS.

Notes for LILLIE MAY DAWSON:
Lillie May Dawson Warner was the first of 10 children born to Isom Martin and Alfretta Dawson. She came with her parents from MO to KS by covered wagon in 1899. Their first Kansas home was in Stafford County. She moved to Ford County with her parents in 1904. The following year she was married to Willie P. Warner at Ford on March 15. She and her husband lived on farms near St. John, Larned and Rozel before moving to Ford in August, 1924.

Lillie was a member of the Ford United Methodist Church. A Charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, she served as president of the women's organization for many years. She was also a member of the Ford Historical Society, the Prairie Gleaners Club, and Ideal Homemakers Club, the Golden Age Club, and Butcher Travel Club.

Their 50th Wedding Anniversary was celebrated with their family and friends. A family dinner was given, followed by an open house in the afternoon. Their first twenty years together were spent in Stafford and Pawnee Counties, and the following thirty years in Ford, Ford Co., KS.

Lillie's love for growing things was expressed and will be remembered by her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. One of the joys of her life was sharing with others from her gardens. She spent many hours on the banks of a stream with her fishing pole and found this a good place to meditate on the problems of life.

Lillie had the opportunity of being a members of the first All-Lady City Council of the town of Ford. And that was "before" women's-lib!

In 1971, she enjoyed the opportunity of having a five-generation picture made with herself being the Great-great grandmother Lillie Warner, and the Great-grandmother Iva Snook, the Grandmother Shirley Riegel, the Mother Leslie Schoonover, and the Child Ami Cherise Schoonover.

For several years, a Dawson reunion was held in the Warner home on Memorial Day when many of the relatives came to Ford to participate in the activities and decorate the graves of loved ones at the cemetery in Ford.

At her funeral, the eulogy was given by her nephew, Rev. Clyde Dawson, and the music, a vocal trio, consisted of two nieces, Berniece Dawson Lemmons and Dorothy Dawson Close, along with a high school friend of theirs, Roberta Pearsall Shrauner, who also was a friend of Lillie. They were accompanied at the pianist by a granddaughter, Marilee Williams. Other family members were also Casket Bearers.

Notes for WILLIAM P. WARNER:
Willie Patterson Warner was born in Patriot, Indiana in 1881. When a child he came to Kansas with his family. They settled in the St. John area. There he grew to manhood.

While there he met Lillie Dawson. They were married in Ford, Kansas on March 15, 1905. Following their marriage they lived on farms near St. John, Larned and Rozel before moving to Ford, Ford Co., KS in August of 1924.

Will spent many years at the Ford creamery where he bought and sold milk products from the farmers in the area. His large scales were always present to weigh the produce as it came to him--and to weigh the children who thought the scales were a novelty, with the heavy weights that had to be moved to get their proper weight. They were so much BIGGER than those at the doctor's office just up the street.

At the time of his death, he was survived by two brothers: E. J. Warner of Larned and Howard Warner of Great Bend, KS. Three sisters also survived: Emma Warner of Winslow, Arkansas, Mrs. Arthur Burnett of Bennett, CO and Mrs. Harry B. Bemis, Arcadia, CA.

************

Remembrances of Will Warner by a younger generation are:

His cream station where he had a "large" scale for weighing cream cans
...his eating lunch at the station
...his cigar
...the smell of the fresh cream
...the image of the short, hard worker, quick to tell another what/how to
get the job done
...the "big" chair where he relaxed

31. CLIFTON "Cliff" CLYDE3 DAWSON (ISOM MARTIN2, MARTIN H.1) was born November 5, 1887 in Jasper Co., MO, and died November 27, 1970 in Bethany, Oklahoma Co, OK. He married FRANKIE 'NONDUS' LOWE June 12, 1910, daughter of FRANK LOWE and LAURA WILKINSON. She was born April 23, 1889, and died May 22, 1982 in Bethany, Oklahoma Co., OK.

Cliff Dawson and his wife, Nondus, moved to Bethany, OK in their later years, and both are buried in the Bethany, OK, Cemetery just north of the City of Bethany in Oklahoma County.

Cliff is remembered by his family as
...a hard worker who taught the children to work
...proud of his kids and helped them with their arithmetic
...Christmas treats he provided
...finding money for school books
...loud singing that might be heard by those in the nearby town of Ford
...creating hand shadows on the wall with his fingers for entertainment
...making biscuits

* * * * *

Excerpts from A TRIBUTE TO DAD written by Eileen Dawson Rollins at the time of Cliff's death. . .

On November 5, 1887, a small bundle from Heaven was delivered into the care of I. M. and Allie Dawson. On this day Cliff Dawson began what was to be a long, long and sometimes wearisome journey. The gift was nurtured in, and early taught, of recognizing the importance of the things of God.

Always there have been children richer in the world's meaningless goods, but there were never ones more loved or whose father was more proud.

To his seven children were born 14 grandchildren, who in turn have presented their grandparents with 12 great-grandchildren.

...The sun is setting now and has nearly slipped beyond the horizon. And now the care so diligently lavished on us, your children, can be returned. Many times now, Dad it seems you are going to slip away, but you seem to say, "Just a little longer, Lord. My family may need me yet another time."

And now the journey is ended.....the hand of God beckons you to come through the Portals of Glory. "And please, Dad, we will be so anxious for a big reunion, won't you meet us at the Gate?"

...a good mother and a hard worker
...gardening, weeding
...adventurous enough to turn a car over
...had a Victrola player which was a real attraction for visiting cousins

********* Excerpts written for Nondus Dawson on Mother's Day 1973--nine years before
her death by Berniece Dawson Lemmons...

Dear Mom

I have a poem which begins:

Love your Mother while she lives
Don't wait for her to die --
To show how much you cared for her
With mourners standing by.

There are probably few families who have a more profound
love for each other than ours; yet few who express it verbally
less than we. --Perhaps this is not all bad. Those who know
our family, either casually or well, are aware of the unusual
closeness. . . . It may be that feeling is more genuine than
it were voiced glibly on one hand -- and then, either by action
or inference, we caused other members of the family or those
outsiders who look on to question the depth of love. . . I think
we "live our love" rather than "talk" it.

In hopes that it will bring some pleasant memories, let me
reminisce and recall some things from the childhood of each
of your seven children.

Well, Clyde just burned the barn down. No, it wasn't arson--
he just burned the barn down! Clyde would strut around say-
Ing "I'm little C.C. --- I'm little C.C."

Now Pearle probably led the "quiet life." I recall you thought
perhaps you neglected her because she was so good! I guess
the most cruel thing she ever did was squeeze a baby chicken
around the neck--until it died!

Then there was Vernon! Trying to be Mom's Little Helper and
take some things off the clothesline, he stood on the sharp
edge of the plow, fell and cut a jagged three cornered gash
in his forearm.

Dorothy was the "House-Cleaner." Dad never could find his
things because Dorothy cleaned the house so well. She
also was the part-time hairdresser. Remember when she
curled my hair for school? By the time I got to school I had
the "stiffest" curls in school. She had used water on it that
turned out to be Sugar Syrup!

And then there was me!! I seemed to be the calamity Jane--
like leaping toward the bed and landing on someone's buried
treasure---yes, a piece of burnt and gnarled glass. Now I
had a scar to match Vernon's.

Paul caused and received his share of excitement. Remember
his ride to town on the black pony to get you a bucket of lard?
On the way home, a noisy truck frightened the pony and Paul
got home with no Pony and only the bail of the bucket. Didn't
make many pies, did it?

And then, there was Eileen! In a first grade music contest she
sang "I Have a Little Shadow that Goes In and Out with Me"
and won second place. We all were as proud as though she
had won first place.

It seems rather strange! But all down through the Seven--if
anyone "picked on" any of the Seven---they better be "A good
fighter" or "A Good Runner."
Love You
Berniece

Notes for GEORGIANNA "Georgia" FRENTZ:
On Sunday afternoon, 2-12-1978, Elmer and Georgia Dawson were honored at an open house reception in the fellowship hall of the Methodist Church in Ford, Ford Co., KS. The occasion was their 60th wedding anniversary. Hosts for the event were their children, Mrs. Mildred Mann of Dodge City, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Dawson of Security, CO, and Mr. Dean Dawson of Los Angeles CA.

A group of 44 relatives arrived from the Oklahoma City and Bethany area in a chartered bus for the occasion. The relatives braved a winter snow storm that swept through Kansas and Oklahoma and closed Highways before the day was over.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The story of Georgia's early life only became known to many of her family in her later years of old. She was a part of the group who came to Kansas on the Orphan Trains. Here is a little background of this historical part of our history.

Advertisements were a common way to let people know an orphan train would be making a stop
in their town. A typical announcement would read: "A company of orphan children, under the
auspices of the Children's Aid Society of New York, will arrive on Friday. These children are from
orphanages, both boys and girls two years old and up… Parties can take them on trial. Adoption
is not demanded… Those taking children must agree to send them to church and Sunday School
properly clothed and cared for until they are 17 years old (boys) and 18 years old (girls)."

While many of the children were placed in loving homes, there were also many cases where the
children were abused by their foster or adoptive parents. Local committees, appointed to approve
the families who offered to take children, rarely turned down an applicant. The committees were
often made up of merchants and local businessmen who did not want to offend their customers
or cause trouble among those in the community.

One success story was John Green Brady. His mother had died and he was left with an abusive
and alcoholic father who often beat him. At the age of seven, he fled and lived on the streets for
a time. He was finally picked up by the police and sent to the city orphanage. In 1859, he found
himself on an orphan train that rolled into Noblesville, Indiana. There, Judge John Green described
"the most motley crew of youngsters I ever did see." He took John Brady home because he
considered him the "homeliest, toughest, most unpromising boy in the lot," and he had a desire to
see what he could do for the boy.

John Green Brady went on to graduate from Yale. He became a trader and a missionary, and
served three terms as the governor of Alaska.

Alice Ayler, another orphan train rider, earned a master's degree in counseling psychology after
beginning college at the age of 50, despite being sent to two different homes as a child and
constantly being threatened to be sent back to the orphanage.

The orphan trains continued to run until 1929. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 200,000
children rode the trains and were placed in foster homes. Many of the records were destroyed
and it is only in recent years, through organizations like the Orphan Train Heritage Society, that
the importance of these children – their experiences, their ordeals, and their resilient spirits –
have begun to take their place in history.

Alice Ayler was placed in a home in the Marion, KS area for a part of her stay with foster parents. It is interesting to know that Georgia was also an Orphan Train Rider and she was placed in that town, though at an earlier date. Alice has been very active in telling the story of these children. It has been almost a silent part of our history until the later part of the 20th Century.

The amazing thing is that in spite of their very difficult beginnings in life, many of these children became very useful outstanding citizens. I consider our Georgia Frentz Dawson to be one of those--a very courageous, loving, and gracious lady! The important thing for them was not what they were, but what they became--in spite of their situations. We salute you!

37. VERNA MABEL3 DAWSON (ISOM MARTIN2, MARTIN H.1) was born December 9, 1901 in Seward, Stafford Co., KS, and died August 24, 1978 in Bethany, Oklahoma Co., OK. She married ELMER MEARKLE KARNS August 14, 1921 in Hutchinson, KS, son of ALVA KARNS and SALOME MEARKLE. He was born July 14, 1893 in Everett, Bedford Co., PA, and died July 20, 1977 in Bethany, Oklahoma Co., OK.

Notes for VERNA MABEL DAWSON:
Verna Dawson Karns spent grades one through High School in the Ford, Ford Co., KS, public schools. After graduation she attended Normal School in Emporia, KS to earn a certificate to teach. She taught a few years in rural schools near Ford.

After Verna and Elmer married they first lived south of Ford, Ford Co., KS [though the address at that time was Kings down, KS. While living there they experienced a tornado on their property, though it did not do extensive damage to the buildings.
While there, pictures indicate that Verna had two close friends--Edna Patterson Haley who was a schoolmate through their school years, and Nancy Karns, wife of Carl. Pictures show them working on a car together, and along with their husbands and children, kept busy with farm, church and community activities.

About 1930, Elmer and Verna moved west of Ford to the Taylor Place where they farmed several years and the girls began school years in a the rural Wilroads School, a mile or so north of their home.

Later a move was made to the Madison Farm about 2 miles east of Ford where the family lived in a home with their first basement, first indoor bathroom, first
upstairs--and one very small room [only a few feet square] with windows and
a step-down floor level! A perfect doll-house!

The Madison Farm adjoined the Arkansas River and as one approached the river area a beautiful pasture with large cottonwood trees made a wonderful place for picnics, etc.

In the early 1940s, one last farm move was made to Dawson Farm north of Ford. Elmer and Verna completely remodeled and/or rebuilt all the buildings which had stood there since Isom Dawson came to this area in 1903/04. A large pasture of native buffalo grass lay to the west of the house and farm land to the north.

In 1956, Elmer and Verna decided it was time to retire. They had spent their lives in this same community and were very highly involved in the activities of the church, community, and lives of their families. They were involved either with playing or singing at many of the funerals in the area for many years.

The farm was sold and they moved to Oklahoma City to be near family. Verna was active and managed the Bethany Book Store for a few years until her retirement in 1971. Elmer kept busy maintaining some rental properties which they had acquired and caring for his yard at their home.

Both are buried in the Bethany OK Cemetery, just north of Bethany, OK.

Notes for ELMER MEARKLE KARNS:
Elmer Mearkle KARNS was born July 14, 1893 near Clearville, south of Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. On August 14, 1921 he married Verna Mabel DAWSON in Hutchinson, Kansas. Their first daughter, Winifred Colleen, was born February 21, 1926. Melva Jean was born March 9, 1927. Elmer died July 20, 1977 in Bethany, Oklahoma.

His mother died of pneumonia in Clearville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania on Sept. 16, 1896. After her death the care of the younger children at home was too much for Alva. The two youngest children, Elmer and Carl, were placed in foster homes. Elmer lived with the Jacob Grubb family, along with their daughter Olive Grubb. Two items that he had in his possession from his years with the foster family were a picture of "Mother Grubb" and a small New Testament which was inscribed on a page in the back "From Miss Olive Grubb - 1902". It was from these two items that it was possible to trace the exact family with whom he had lived. He attended public schools in Pennsylvania and later in Kansas.

In 1903/04 Elmer's father, Alva, began the journey west to Kansas with five children, including Elmer. They lived first in the Englevale, Kansas region, and later moved to western Kansas. Elmer attended the Kiowa County Teachers Normal School, completing his training as a teacher in 1912. He taught in the Shuman School, District #7, near the town of Wright in Ford County, Kansas during the 1912-1913 school year. He had 19 students that year. His occupation then shifted to farming and raising livestock.

The Church of the Nazarene of Ford, Kansas was organized in 1924. Elmer was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and always was a faithful member until he moved from the community.

Following their marriage, Elmer and Verna lived in the vicinity of Ford, Kansas from 1921 until his retirement. They first lived south of town on the Clark Place, then in 1927 moved to the west side of Ford on the Taylor Place. They next lived on the Madison Farm just east of Ford. They moved to the Dawson home place northeast of Ford in 1943. There lived until retirement in 1956, when they moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

After retirement, they lived in Oklahoma City until Elmer's health failed and it was necessary for him to go to a nursing home. Verna did not want to leave her husband, so they lived together in the nursing home for a year. Elmer's heart was weak, and the end came when he passed away peacefully in his sleep of heart failure in 1977. Verna survived him, living until August 24, 1978.

SOME THINGS I REMEMBER . . . by Melva Jean KARNS LADD, daughter

About Elmer--
. . . His habit of checking the car for flats in time to change a tire and still be on time.
. . . Always stopping the machinery on the Sabbath--even though the crops were ready for harvest and storms might threaten.
. . . Always dependable.
. . . Starting the day with family Bible reading and prayer following breakfast.

About the family–
. . . The yearly trek to church assembly in August--sometimes staying in homes of community people, a few times sleeping in a tent, always meeting old friends from earlier years.
. . . Trip to Colorado to see Pike's Peak and crossing the Divide--first time to see a mountain.
. . . Trips to take Grandmother Allie Dawson to Missouri to visit relatives--always looked forward to roasting ears and visiting the well to draw water with a bucket at the home of Roy and Audra Dawson in Sarcoxie, Missouri.

A LETTER TO ELMER KARNS FROM HIS NIECE, SARA JEAN RILEY

Oct. 31, 1970
Dear Uncle,
The attached article from the November Reader's Digest [concerning early memories]--together with my heartfelt wish that I could have come with mother last weekend--prompts this letter. I read the article Monday night after everyone was in bed; and, slowly at first, then almost rhythmically like waves rushing up on the sand, memories began tumbling in on the shores of my mind . . .
Of course I remember the special days, the holidays, the reunions; but there are so many others, too.
Some I've thought of often, and shared with many friends and loved ones. First in this category is the penciled postcard, the delightful loving poem about the harvest and the newborn kittens, you wrote to me. I still recall the thrill that long-ago day of discovering--for the first and only time--that instead of a card or letter quoting you, I actually had one from you. That was not only a childhood treasure but for many years an adult one as well, one still treasured in memory. [See a copy of the poem below.]
Also oft-repeated is that hilarious (in retrospect--it wasn't all that funny then) episode of the tiny baby mice you carefully gathered up out in the granary and put in a box for me, telling me they were baby pigs. (I saw some baby mice that size in the LSU [Louisiana State University] animal lab last week, and with a little imagination they still look like baby pigs!) I rushed to the house with that box, down the basement stairs to show Auntie, Colleen and Melva Jean, and spilled them every which way to the accompaniment of mild but definitely outraged feminine shrieks.
Poignantly, with awesome clarity, I remember what must have been the only times in childhood when I was truly, desperately, despairingly sorry for something I'd done. The time in the basement when I played with that forbidden temptation, your round shaving mirror, and broke it. You eyed me sadly and told me where you'd gotten it and how many years you'd had it. And I wished miserably that I could just disappear. Then there was the time you found a tiny not-even-any-feathers-yet baby sparrow out by the chicken house before I'd caught up with you. You turned with it hidden in your hand, said 'shut your eyes and hold out your hands'--I was so startled at that shivering, palpitating naked little bit of life that I dropped it, and once again, so ashamed, made you sad.

Very-little-girl memories, from the time of the old two-story farmhouse:

You rescuing kittens from the basement during the flood, the water slowly but inexorably rising step by step.
Getting caught sucking the corners of the new cloth sugar sacks after a trip to the store; also getting caught out in the corral in my best dress licking the new salt lick--and scaring the daylights out of everyone when I was discovered 'cause the bull was in the corral.
Being given a penny, or pickle, tied in the corner of a hankie, to keep me quiet in church.
You shaking powder inside my cast before bedtime when I had my collarbone broken.
The bewildering excitement of the stubble field catching fire.
Learning to ride the full-size bike--and my surprise the first time I looked back to find Colleen far behind me no longer holding on to the back fender.
Mixed-up pride and stage-fright the first time I had a "piece" in the Christmas pageant at church.

What seems to be one of my very earliest memories is being hoisted up to the top of whatever-model-Ford-had-a-sort-of-rubber-roof to watch the 4th of July fireworks.
You giving me one of Fluffy's kittens to take home when I left--reluctantly--to go to Dodge City.

And later:

I remember being taught to drive the tractor (at the ripe age of 9); the big truck a year later--and a lesson learned that day lingers still, "A good driver should be able to go up and down hills without losing or gaining speed"--; the new, blue '48 Plymouth?
I remember learning to drive the black '46 pickup (and you shooting at winter rabbits out the window). There's a sequel to this. About 3 years ago Bob went shopping for a pickup to use for hunting, camping, etc. He bought one, brought it home, and hollered 'come see!" A light green, 1946 Chevrolet pickup. I took a startled look at its grill, the windshield that opened outward, the floor shift and the big floor starter button up to the right of the gas pedal, then climbed in. Bob innocently asked "Think you can drive it?" And I burst into almost tearful laughter (the poor man probably wondered what he'd done wrong!) and finally sputtered out, "Honey, I learned in it!"

All sorts of big and little memories, unconnected chronologically:

The fun you had with the new record player, mirroring my own delight at "I'm My Own Grampa" and Spike Jones' "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth."
The jokes at Christmas, particularly Uncle Arthur's multi-wrapped boxes which finally unwrapped down to a walnut filled with Carter's Little Liver pills.
"Pull a pig's tail and he says unh-huh"'--and now I'm saying that to Marie's 'huh?'
My chuckles as you, with unerring accuracy, splattered a cat's mouth with a stream of milk clear across the barn. And the splashing, butting struggles of weaning a calf to a bucket.
The baby skunk with eyes still closed that you put with the new litter of barn kittens--and Jean's squeamish surprise when she realized what it was.
The night Shep barked "snake!" and you found the big bull snake hanging nearly at eye level over the chicken house door.
The big, beautiful, orange and white goldfish in the cattle tank.
The fun of watching for rabbits when the haystacks were broken up and loaded.
The truck rides to the 'far' pasture to feed the cattle, and my apprehension of 'Old Horny.'
Carrying skinned, gutted rabbits in to the house for you and watching them jump in the sink--just like you said they would.
The hog-butchering when you tried to give me an eye and I wouldn't take it.
The delicious yet scarifying smell of the poison mash--for grasshoppers?
The taste of water out of a tin cup at the windmill.
How grown-up and important I felt when you took me to the cattle sales.
The 'big flood' of '43. I'd hoped it would keep me at the farm, but we drove thru what must have been over a foot of water across the highway back to Dodge.
The scolding you gave Dwight when he frightened me with a snake during the post-hole digging.
The early pre-dawn sound of you shoveling coal into the furnace--and the times I got sent back to bed 'til the house warmed up.
Turning the ice-cream freezer; and licking the butter-churn paddles.

I remember the squishy feeling when you put my hand print in the porch step cement. (Four years ago I satisfied the Sitton's curiosity as to where that print came from).
I remember being utterly terrified at seeing you in the hospital when you got cement poisoning.
I remember you coming for me, standing there in my 3rd grade classroom, when grandmother died.
I remember you teaching me to find the North Star, and the Big and Little Dippers, and answering my never-ending stream of questions. (I also remember believing a rabbit could be caught by putting salt on its tail)
I remember my first trip out-of-state--to Bethany with you for the graduation.
I remember 'keep quiet now' when you listened to the farm market reports on the old radio. (They still sound like Greek to me)
I remember the old crank wall telephone, and the general ring for frost warnings and such.
I remember--with unspeakable nostalgia--SNOW. Snowdrifts, three feet of snow in the driveway, snowmen, the big sleigh, delicious forehead-splitting cold, blizzards . . . I haven't seen over an inch of snow in 10 years!
I remember the sound of your voice leading the evening prayers.
I remember. I remember so many things. You, more than anything or anyone else, were responsible for my continuing bump of curiosity and my childhood sense of wonder. And I wish there were still a farm, and that my not-quite-four Marie could be "Tag-Along-Too Lou" with you, making memories. . . .

What do you remember best? I'm still asking questions . . . please, to satisfy my curiosity, and for little Colleen's baby book--who picked the name 'Colleen', how, and from where?

I remember the distaff side of things, too; the sewing, cooking, the garden--but that's another letter.

Much love,
Sara Jean

NOTE: Sara Jean RILEY is the niece of Elmer KARNS. At the time of his death in 1977 she rewrote this letter in essay form. She was librarian for the Ventura, California Star-Free Press at that time. The essay was printed by the Dodge City Daily Globe and by The Bucklin Banner. Sara's preface to the article in The Bucklin Banner follows.

Elmer Karns was far more than "uncle" to me--he was the only "father" I know. My own father, Eugene C. Riley, died Christmas of 1938 in a disastrous house fire at his mother's home in Kinsley, Kansas. Where do I fit in? Mrs. Elmer Karns (Verna) is my mother's sister. My mother, Elta J. Riley, was clerk of the district court in Dodge City from 1940 to 1967. Unless it's been sold again since 1972, the "old home place" referred to is the farm now owned by the Sittons northeast of the Ford bridge across the Arkansas river. It was the original Dawson farm started by Isom Martin Dawson in about 1904. Elmer and Verna Karns rebuilt every building on the place in the early 1940s, and it stayed in the family continuously for nearly 60 years.

A POEM WRITTEN BY ELMER KARNS FOR HIS NIECE, SARA JEAN RILEY:

The newest things down on the farm
Are two new calves around the barn;
A dozen kittens are in the hay,
All are yellow if they're not grey.
Plums all picked and corn all gone
Peaches are green and still hanging on.
Long wet harvest wasn't funny,
Lots of work and not much money.
