Mrs. C. A. Snyder

Into the home of Simon H. and Engelbert Mearkle Karns, near Pine Ridge, Bedford County, Pennsylvania a daughter was born on Nov. 20, 1880 who was named Rachel. Here she attended the schools, fitting herself for teaching and grew into beautiful womanhood.

Reared in a devout home, she early accepted Christ as her Savior and her life was characterized by her devotion to God and His Church.

On June 12, 1902 she became the bride of Cromwell A. Snyder of her home community. Their home was blessed in the coming of three daughters, Mary, Lucy L. and Esther T.; and two sons, Paul F. and Don A. They lived at Clearville, Pa. before coming West.

The lure of the newer West attracted them and in the spring of 1915, they became residents of Morton County, Kansas first settling at Rolla where they conducted a mercantile establishment for about a year, then moving to a ranch which adjoined the town of Wilburton. Here they built their lives into a developing pioneer community. Transferring into the local Methodist Church, they dedicated time, talents and means into its upbuilding. Their home was ever open to God's ministers who served in the community. Her membership at Elkhart Methodist church included the WSCS.

Rachel's lovely alto voice brought comfort and courage to many sorrowing hearts as she and Mr. Snyder, with others, sang at many funerals.

Gifted of God with a love for children and a hunger for knowledge, she was for years a Sunday School teacher both of youth and adults, and for a period of years taught in the public schools. The family moved to Elkhart in 1926 to send the children to High School and in 1946 they moved to Colorado Springs but about 2 years ago, they returned to the home at Wilburton.

Mrs. Snyder’s health failed in recent months and death came as she slept in the morning of Jan. 14. A life that was filled with love, faith and service, ended in peace. Her memory will be cherished by the companion of 52 years; two sons and two daughters, with their companions, (the oldest daughter had lived only a few brief months); 11 grandchildren, 6 brothers, 3 sisters, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Snyder of Rolla, and other relatives and many friends.
