BROYLES CENSUS DATA

Greene County, TN

1850 TO 1930

I am in the process of reading every name on every page of the Census Reports for Greene County, TN, for the 1850 Census through the 1930 Census.  I have entered the names and data exactly as it was written by the Enumerators.  There are, of course, Numerator errors in spelling and errors of ages, dates, places of birth, etc.  Some of these errors are the fault of the Enumerators, and some are, I’m sure, the fault of whoever was giving the data to the Enumerator; often children were the only ones home and they just didn’t know the spelling of names, exactly when someone was born, etc.  Then, some may be my errors due to the difficult of deciphering the handwriting of the Enumerators.

I plan to do this for every Germanna family in East Tennessee for each county where they are found, e.g., Washington, Sullivan, Carter, Unicoi, Campbell, White, etc., for each Decennial Census Year and Enumeration District.

(Page numbers are those handwritten by the Census administrators, NOT the Image Numbers used by Ancestry.com.  I have entered the data in the sequence in which  it was entered by the Enumerator.)

(Edwin N. BROYLES is Edwin Nash BROYLES, son of Cain BROYLES and Lucinda NASH, whose household is listed below as the last entry in the Eastern District, 9th Division section of the 1850 U.S. Census for Greene Co., TN.  Evidently Edwin was residing with the FOUTE family while apprenticing with some lawyer in Greeneville.  Since Mary A. FOUTE was born in SC, it is likely that the FOUTE family were either relatives or friends of the Cain BROYLES family, since both Cain and Lucinda were also born in SC.  The transcriber at Ancestry.com transcribed the FOUTE surname as FONTE, which you will have to search for at Ancestry to see this entry.  Edwin Nash BROYLES does not appear in George W. FOUTE’s household in the 1860 Census for Greene Co., TN, and Cain BROYLES and his family do not appear in the 1860 Census for Greene Co., TN.  It is logical to assume that Edwin had finished his studies and the entire family moved back to SC, or at least out of this area.)

(Notice that there were two Census entries for James BROYLES, one James BROYLES, and one James F. BROYLES, Jr.  They took place on the same day, 15 houses apart.  The ages and names of the house members are identical.  I could differentiate the two if it were not for the son, Samuel A., 8 months old.  I “believe” Samuel A. belonged to James BROYLES,  not James F. BROYLES, Jr.  But, how did the James in Dwelling # 764 get the same wife and child?  I’m starting to believe that the Enumerator used a “proxy” for at least one of these families, and the proxy misinformed the Enumerator.  James, son of Cyrus Josiah BROYLES ended up in AR; James F., Jr., son of James BROYLES ended up in MO.)

(Oliver M. was Oliver Marion BROYLES, son of Jacob “Black Jake” BROYLES, and Sarah J. “Sally” JONES.  Oliver didn’t marry until 1862 and Samuel didn’t marry until 1870.  Oliver was living with his father during the 1850 Census.  He was a brother of August Four BROYLES, George Jones “Jock” BROYLES, James Allen BROYLES, John Franklin BROYLES, King BROYLES, Lewis H. BROYLES, and Montgomery Stuart BROYLES.  The entries for this section is confusing.  First the Enumerator listed House # 37 as “Unoccupied”, then he listed Oliver and Samuel for that house, without any Family # designation.  I suppose the Enumerator considered the house vacant because no “family” was residing there, just a couple of bachelors who did not constitute a family.)

(Jacob was Jacob “Black Jake” BROYLES, son of Lewis BROYLES and Mary McCAIN, and father of August Four BROYLES, George Jones “Jock” BROYLES, James Allen BROYLES, John Franklin BROYLES, Lewis H. BROYLES, King BROYLES, Montgomery Stuart BROYLES, and Oliver Marion BROYLES, enumerated in this Census.  Susan E. was Susan Elizabeth BROYLES, who had married William P. G’FELLERS, not a FELLERS.  William died in Apr 1866, so Susan and her children had moved in with her father, Jacob.  Stephen and Anne were Susan’s and William’s children.  Although the surname here is FELLERS, William’s legal name was G’FELLERS.  To confuse even more, the two children, Stephen and Anne, were known by the surname FILLERS.  And, to confuse even more, there were three different and distinct family lines in Horse Creek:  FILLERS, FELLERS, and G’FELLERS.  Those three families had different ancestral lines, that is, until they intermarried in Horse Creek and the lines became blurred.  That members of those three families were often recorded in official records three different ways make it even harder to figure out correct ancestries for them.  Now, who was Hannah FELLERS, listed as “Black” in this Census?  We know the story of “Black Jake” BROYLES and his mixed blood, but how did the FELLERS/G’FELLERS come into the picture?

(This entry in the 1880 Census for Greene Co., TN, is a mismash of erroneous data.  First, Edward D. was actually Edward H. BROYLES, son of Ozey Reed BROYLES and his first wife, Sarah Ann Harmon. Edward was a brother of Wylie Winton BROYLES, Oliver P. BROYLES, and George M. BROYLES, and a half brother to Patton Reaves BROYLES.  Edward's proven birth date is 15 Sep 1849, making him 31 years old in 1880, not 46 years old.  Mary E. was Mary Edna WILHOIT and her age is correct, since she was born 11 May 1854.  Luther O. was Luther Hayes BROYLES, born 18 Jan 1879, so his age is also correct.  I do not know why the Enumerator entered Edward's age as 46.)

(Amanda was Amanda BROYLES, daughter of Julius BROYLES and Catherine SNAPP.  Amanda married Elbert S. FOX, who died in 1878.  Manervey is, of course, a misspelling of Minerva.  The name was transcribed at Ancestry.com as "Maneney", which is certainly a nonsense name.  I can find no niece of Amanda whose name could possibly be "Minerva" or "Manervey", and, furthermore, none of Amanda's brothers had documented children as late as 1858, which would have been this persons approximate birth year.  Amanda did have a sister named Minerva but she was much too old to be this Minerva.)

BROYLES, daughter of Matilda and former wife of Jacob C. BITNER; William was William Dobson BITNER; James E. was James Elbert "Ebb" BITNER; Sara E. was Sarah E. BITNER.  Keziah and her children were listed here as BROYLES, when they should have been listed as BITNER.  Since Keziah and Jacob apparently divorced about 1876, and Jacob had left Keziah carrying a child, it is possible she reverted to her maiden surname due to "hard feelings".  As for the children being listed as BROYLES, I feel this was just an error on the Enumerator's part.  We know for a fact that William Dobson was a BITNER because all his records so indicate, including the fact that his children were named BITNER.  Also, the Enumerator did not mark the marital status of Keziah or her children.)
