In May, 2000, and in May, 2002, John and Eleanor Blankenbaker traveled to Germany and Austria to visit villages from which our Germanna ancestors immigrated.  This page contains photos taken in Sulzfeld, Germany, and at Ravensburg Castle.
(Each photo is labeled for the month & year it was taken.)

Photos of Sulzfeld, Germany

Sulzfeld & Ravensburg Castle

Sulzfeld Village

This photo for Sulzfeld shows the approach to the town.  This is where the Christopher Zimmerman family lived, also the Kablers, and the Yowells.  As you approach the village, you can see the ruins of the Ravensburg Castle on the top of the small hill.  The castle in not entirely in ruins, as we will see shortly when we climb the tower.

Sulzfeld Church

Within Sulzfeld, this is the view of the church.  Probably it dates back to before the Reformation.

Sulzfeld from Tower 1

Now that we are on top of the tower (having climbed some very shaky stairs), we get a great view in all directions.  I counted seven villages that I could see from the tower.  The country side around about these parts is very gently rolling, which makes the view possible.  The town here is Sulzfeld, of course, and the church can barely be distinguished in the center of the town.

Sulzfeld from Tower 2

A wider angle view from the Ravensburg Tower shows the rolling country side even better.  It also shows the vineyards that are common in this area.  Christopher Zimmerman and Friedrich Kabler were both coopers and they probably made barrels for the wine trade.  The people who tend these fields live in the villages.
