Evidence Regarding the Date of Death of Uli (Ulrich) Ginglesberger

From a strictly genealogical point of view, the document, "Inventory of the Goods and Chattles of Uli Ginglesberger deced" gives evidence that the date of the death of Ulrich Gindlesperger was on or before June 27, 1783. Another document, not here presented, indicates that on April 30, 1783, "...Uli Ginglesberger was of sound and disposing mind and Memory...." The death of Ulrich Gindlesperger, therefore occurred within the 58 day period from April 30 to June 27, 1783.

Whether the date was "on" or "before" depends upon the interpretation of the date that appears in the following document.

Does the date as it appears refer to "Uli Ginglesberger late of Bedford County Yeoman Deceased" [on this date June 27, 1783]? If the answer were to be determined in the affirmative, the date is the date of Ulrich's death.

But one could also ask: Is the date simply the date on which the "Inventory" was made? In that case the emphasis would be on the word "late" of Bedford County and the actual date of death would remain indefinite, but prior to the date of the Inventory.

To resolve the question further inquiry is necessary.

One line of inquiry would be to determine the standard method of dating such legal documents at the time, if indeed there were such as standard method.

So with the evidence from this document we have come some eight months closer to the date of Ulrich's death than the date of the recording of his Last Will and Testament and related documents; namely, February 25, 1784.

But the precise date of death is not yet definitive.
