| Nancy Jane was always known simply as Jane. She was
born February 19, 1846 in what was at that time Cabell County, Virginia.
She was the daughter of John Gore and Margaret Jane Dingess. She
was the granddaughter of Joseph Gore and Martha Pine and of John Dingess
and Chloe Farley.
Her siblings were Chloe, born about 1837; Floyd, born about 1839; John J., and Joseph B. born about 1841; Mary Ann, born about 1844; and Martha, born about 1848. She was married to Squire Toney, son of Burbus Toney and Keziah Lucas, on January 16, 1867 in Logan County, WV. The marriage was performed by Josephus Workman. Her children were: Mary Alice, Margaret May, Nancy Emeline, Almony, Polly, John Clinton, Wallace Shelton, Leander, Walter, Martha and Maude. Polly was my grandmother. My aunt Thelma told a story that her grandmother had related to her : When Jane was a young girl, her dad fought in the Civil War. All the young people went to a dance except Jane, who stayed home with her dad. He told her to get a horse, ride to the dance and to yell, "The Rebels are coming!!!", then to race home and go to bed. She did this. It broke up the dance. All the other young people came home talking about the excitement. She acted as if she knew nothing about it. She never told about this until many years later. She and her dad would laugh about "their secret". Jane died July 29, 1918, and was buried in the Toney Cemetery on Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County, WV. After her death, my Aunt Thelma went to stay with her grandfather (Squire Toney) for a while. She said he would pace the porch each night, watching the cemetery, with tears running down his face. Squire died September 19, 1921, and was buried by Jane's side. |
