Story # 15

Robert Gore, son of Henry and Ann Catherine, was a captain in the Civil War. This story comes from pages 10 and 11 of The Genealogy of the Gore Family by George T. Swain:

On the 17th day of March, 1837, the General Assembly of Virginia, established and created the county of Mercer, which now lies in the boundary of West Virginia; and Robert Gore was named one of the 18 Justices to administer the laws of this newly created county. During the Civil War, this same Robert was a Captain of Company D, 17th Regiment of the Virginia troops and served with distinction under the immediate command of General Jubal Early.

The story that Robert Gore was instrumental in the forming of Mercer County is true. However, at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Robert was 78 years of age. The Robert Gore who was a lieutenant in Company A, 17th Virginia Cavalry and later a captain in Company D was born 1825 and was a grandson of the older Robert Gore.
