Story # 17

Robert Gore was a captain in the Revolutionary War. This ludicrous claim has its origin with Anna Gore Medley of Pembroke, Virginia and is quoted from an article which she wrote on page 310 of Giles County, Virginia History - Families by the Research Committee, Giles County Historical Society:

My father was a sixth generation descendent of Capt. Robert Gore, a distinguished soldier of the Revolutionary War under Gen. George Washington.....He was an invalid the last eleven years of his life, during which he collected a history of the Gore family. A Genealogical chart dating back to the early 1600's to the Old St. Gore Castle on the Rhine River in Germany is now in my hands.

Mrs. Medley's father was none other than Thomas Henry Gore of Tower Hill, West Virginia who, along with Mrs. Ida Spangler, authored several wild yarns about his ancestors (see story #5). Mrs. Medley was made aware of all this about a year before the Giles County History was published but she decided to go ahead and perpetuate her father's incredulous fabrications. The truth of the matter is that Mrs. Medley and I share the same common ancestor, namely Robert Gore who was born in 1783, two years after the Revolutionary War had ended. There are no other Roberts in her Gore lineage or mine. There are no captains in our mutual line either.
