Story # 5
Henry Gore was born in Ireland. This has already been mentioned in Story #3 in which Mr. Swain quoted from a portion of page 281 of Gore, Goare, Goar and Kindred by Joseph Elmer Goar. An expanded quote from page 281 follows: The following information is given by Dr. C. S. Goar, 740 Bankers Trust Bldg., Indianapolis, Indiana, and was furnished by his sister, Clarissa Emily (Goar) Kleyla, now deceased. She visited the old homestead in W. Va. of James and Sarah Farley Gore, and secured information from Thomas Gore of Tower Hill, Mercer Co., W. Va., Mrs. Ida Spangler, Peterstown, W. Va., and from others living in the vicinity, and noted as follows: Henry Gore came from Ireland to New York some time before the French and Indian War of 1754, and a few years later married Ann Catherine Keller of New York. They afterwards moved to Island Creek, a branch of New River, in "1772" Montgomery Co. Va. This county was afterwards divided into several counties and the old home place is now in Summers Co. W. Va.... Thomas Gore, Tower Hill, Summers Co., W. Va., is the son of James Gore. His father was Henry Gore, the sone of Henry Gore. Robert Gore was the son of Henry, the Irish immigrant. Henry Gore was born in Middlesex County, Virginia as indicated in the Christ Church Parish Register. The statement that he was born in Ireland , therefore, is false. So is much of the rest of the information in this article. Henry Gore was never in New York. All available evidence shows that Ann Catherine Keller was probably born in Virginia, not New York. This story makes no allowance for Henry's first marriage to Margaret. He and Ann Catherine could not have moved to Island Creek in 1772 because they were not married until 2 May 1779 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. In 1772 Ann Catherine was only eleven years of age. Henry Gore never came within 150 miles of Island Creek although his widow did when she moved there the year following his death. It appears to me that Thomas Gore and Ida Spangler concocted these wild yarns for the purpose of entertaining their gullible cousin from Indiana.
