Letter from Henry Hurst to his brother William

Mt. Sterling, Kentucky
February 9, 1864

Dear Brother:

I have just returned safe from a 13 day's scout in the mountains. We had great success. We killed two and captured a large number of prisoners, among them was Joseph Back and Capt. Jacob Edwards, who with his men killed the men at the Ticktown bridge and later on the same night killed Jacob Stephens. Among our prisoners was a man by the name of Frisby and another by the name of Collinsworth. We know them to be regular Guerillas and horse thieves. We turned all of them over to our soldiers with the proper recommendations. We also captured about 25 good horses. We gave the Guerrillas a plain hint of what they would get next time. There are plenty of them in the mountains and we intend to keep them in hot water.
The Rebels robbed George Phillips and he left and brought his family here. They got after Dick Wilson and Morris Nickell and they are also here.

Yours truly,

H.C. Hurst
