Eliza Millwood Oakley
Eliza's obituary lists her date of birth as
July 10, 1860, her grave stone list it as July 15, 1860, and the 1880 census
list it as 25 and born in 1855. In 1883 when she was married in Yell
County AR she lists her age as 26 on the date of her marriage December 23,
1883.
My Aunt told me that Eliza was an orphan who was raised along with her sister by
an Uncle who was not married. This Uncle was a fisherman who was gone from
the home for long periods of time. She also said they had a baby brother
who was given up for adoption when their parents died. My Aunt did
not know the sisters name nor did she know for sure what Eliz's maiden name
was. She knew however that my Grandfather had thought it was Fowler until
when joining the Army during WWI when he had to get a copy of his birth
certificate and found out it was something else. We also knew she was born
in SC.
At last I have some new information. Also married in Yell County AR
December 9, 1883 was Amanda Millwood. Amanda is also listed on the same
1880 census as Eliza. Eliza's only daughter was named Amanda.
The 1880 census of Union Co. SC has Eliza and Amanda living in the home of
Marcus and Betsey Fowler and they are listed as adopted. I have not yet
been able to find them on the 1870 or 1860 census.
